Overview
Enchanted Princess is a Royal-class cruise ship operated by Princess Cruises, which is part of Carnival Corporation & plc. The vessel was commissioned as the fifth Royal-class ship in a broader Carnival Corporation shipbuilding program with the Italian builder Fincantieri. The order was finalized in April 2016, following a strategic agreement between Carnival Corporation and Fincantieri covering five cruise ships scheduled for delivery between 2019 and 2022. The ship was constructed at Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard in Italy. Her keel was laid on 14 February 2019, and she was floated out on 6 August of the same year. The vessel's construction schedule was disrupted in 2020 when Fincantieri temporarily closed its shipyards during the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy. Enchanted Princess had originally been expected to debut in June 2020, but the pandemic-related interruption delayed delivery. She completed sea trials in June and July 2020 and was delivered at Monfalcone on 30 September 2020. At delivery, she became the 100th passenger vessel constructed by Fincantieri. Enchanted Princess is approximately 145,281 gross tons and measures 330 metres in length, with a beam of 38.4 metres and a draft of 8.49 metres. Her diesel-electric propulsion plant uses four Wärtsilä engines with a combined output of 62.4 megawatts. Two electric motors drive the ship's propellers, supporting a service speed of approximately 21.9 knots and a maximum speed of about 23 knots. The ship contains 1,830 passenger cabins and 757 crew cabins; approximately 81 percent of the passenger cabins have balconies. Its maximum passenger-and-crew capacity is approximately 5,800 people. The onboard concept builds on accommodations and guest offerings introduced on the preceding Sky Princess. Enchanted Princess includes a newer suite category, revised interior treatments in selected venues, and additional restaurant concepts. As a Princess Cruises vessel, it is designed to combine resort-style accommodation, dining, entertainment, and destination cruising within a large contemporary cruise-ship format. The ship's planned introduction was substantially affected by the pandemic. Princess Cruises had initially scheduled a pre-inaugural Mediterranean sailing from Rome to Southampton in June 2020, followed by a christening in Southampton. The suspension of Princess operations through the summer of 2021 cancelled the vessel's intended first operating season in Europe and the Caribbean. After remaining out of regular passenger service for roughly a year, Enchanted Princess began its maiden voyage on 10 November 2021 from Port Everglades. The itinerary included calls at Princess Cays, St. Thomas, Dominica, Curaçao, and Aruba. In late 2021, Princess selected three women associated with The Explorers Club—Lynn Danaher, Vicki Ferrini, and Jenifer Austin—as the ship's godmothers. A recorded naming production was streamed on 13 December 2021, during which the three godmothers formally named Enchanted Princess. The ship represents the continuation of Princess Cruises' Royal-class fleet strategy and remains associated with the line's Mediterranean and Caribbean cruise programs.
History
Enchanted Princess was developed as the fifth vessel in Princess Cruises' Royal class. Its construction formed part of a wider Carnival Corporation agreement with Fincantieri announced in 2015, covering five cruise ships intended for delivery from 2019 through 2022. Princess finalized the order for the then-unnamed ship on 2 April 2016. Early descriptions called for a vessel of roughly 145,000 gross tons and a passenger capacity of approximately 3,660. Princess later announced the name Enchanted Princess on 20 August 2018. Fincantieri began physical construction at its Monfalcone shipyard, where the keel was laid on 14 February 2019. The ship was floated out on 6 August 2019, with a dedication performed by Fincantieri employee Marinella Cossu. Princess held a separate ceremony on 17 September 2019, with Doris Magsaysay Ho, a Filipino Princess crew recruiter and trainer, performing the associated honors. The project encountered a major schedule interruption in 2020. Fincantieri temporarily closed its Italian shipyards for six weeks during the COVID-19 outbreak, affecting construction and postponing the planned delivery and debut. Enchanted Princess began sea trials on 13 June 2020, sailing from Monfalcone to Palermo. It remained in Palermo until 26 June, returned to Monfalcone on 29 June, and completed its trials successfully on 8 July. Delivery took place at Monfalcone on 30 September 2020, three months later than the expected delivery date. The ship was also recognized as the 100th passenger vessel built by Fincantieri. The original service plan called for a June 2020 pre-inaugural Mediterranean sailing from Rome to Southampton and a later christening in Southampton. Princess Cruises' broader operational suspension through summer 2021 meant that the planned European and Caribbean debut season did not occur. Following an approximately year-long pause in operations, the ship entered passenger service on 10 November 2021 from Port Everglades. Its maiden itinerary visited Princess Cays, St. Thomas, Dominica, Curaçao, and Aruba. Enchanted Princess incorporates several developments previously introduced on sister ship Sky Princess. These include a new suite accommodation category, updated interiors in selected public areas, and additional restaurant offerings. The ship measures 145,281 gross tons, is 330 metres long, and uses diesel-electric propulsion supplied by four Wärtsilä engines. Two electric motors drive the propellers. It has 1,830 passenger cabins and 757 crew cabins, with balconies in approximately 81 percent of passenger cabins. In November 2021, Princess announced three women from The Explorers Club—Lynn Danaher, Vicki Ferrini, and Jenifer Austin—as godmothers. The naming event was presented as a recorded production streamed on 13 December 2021. Enchanted Princess thereby entered the Princess Cruises fleet as a large Royal-class ship focused on resort-style cruising and itineraries in regions including the Mediterranean and Caribbean.
