Overview

Carnival Panorama is a Vista-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line, a brand of Carnival Corporation & plc. The ship was ordered from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri during the expansion of Carnival Corporation's modern large-ship fleet and was ultimately assigned to Carnival Cruise Line rather than the originally announced P&O Cruises Australia program. Its name was formally announced in December 2017, identifying it as the third and final Vista-class vessel built for Carnival Cruise Line. Construction began at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard with steel cutting in July 2017. Her keel was laid in January 2018, she was floated out in December 2018, and she completed sea trials in the Adriatic Sea in July 2019. Fincantieri formally delivered the ship to Carnival Cruise Line in October 2019. With a gross tonnage of approximately 133,868 and a length of about 323 metres, Carnival Panorama is the largest of Carnival's original three Vista-class ships. Her design develops the accommodation, dining, entertainment, and family-oriented facilities introduced on Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon. A notable design distinction is the inclusion of a Sky Zone trampoline park instead of the IMAX theatre installed on the earlier Vista-class sisters. The ship also includes Carnival's WaterWorks aqua park, family and youth activities, multiple restaurants and bars, theatrical entertainment, retail areas, pools, and outdoor recreation spaces. The WaterWorks attractions were promoted in association with basketball player Shaquille O'Neal, whose relationship with Carnival also supported the brand's family and casual-entertainment positioning. Carnival Panorama undertook a 38-day delivery voyage from the Mediterranean to California, travelling across the Atlantic and around South America through the Strait of Magellan. After arriving in the Los Angeles area in December 2019, she moved to the Port of Long Beach for welcoming ceremonies and was christened by Vanna White. Her inaugural voyage departed on 11 December 2019, and she then assumed a year-round pattern of week-long cruises to the Mexican Riviera, commonly calling at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. This deployment made her an important West Coast ship for Carnival Cruise Line and replaced the comparable weekly program previously operated by Carnival Splendor. Carnival Panorama's early operating history was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, a passenger's illness led the CDC and Long Beach authorities to delay disembarkation while the passenger was tested. The test was negative, but the ship's following voyage was shortened after the delay. As cruise operations were broadly suspended, Carnival Panorama also participated in the repatriation of crew members. She was subsequently the only Carnival ship continuing to sail from her homeport for a period before service from the Long Beach market expanded again in 2021. The ship underwent a drydock in Portland in 2023. Her funnel had to be removed temporarily so that the vessel could pass beneath bridges on the Columbia River. In 2024, Carnival Panorama received Carnival Cruise Line's updated exterior color scheme. She remains positioned as a large, family-friendly, mainstream cruise product focused on convenient departures from Southern California and Mexican Riviera vacations.

History

Carnival Panorama originated in Carnival Corporation's mid-2010s program for a group of new ships to be delivered between 2019 and 2022. In December 2015, the company announced that a roughly 4,200-passenger ship from this program would be delivered to P&O Cruises Australia. In December 2016, however, the assignment was transferred to Carnival Cruise Line, where the ship became the third Carnival vessel based on the Vista-class platform. The revised arrangement was connected with a planned transfer of another ship to P&O Cruises Australia, although the specific fleet solution later changed. Construction formally began at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard on 7 July 2017 with the cutting of the first steel. The keel was laid on 10 January 2018, and the ship was floated out on 6 December 2018. Carnival Corporation announced the name Carnival Panorama on 1 December 2017. The name reflected the ship's large-scale design and its relationship to the Vista-class series. Carnival promoted the developing ship publicly before completion. During the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade, Carnival presented a float called "Come Sail Away," designed around the ship and equipped with trampolines and music. Carnival Panorama completed sea trials in the Adriatic on 18 July 2019. Fincantieri delivered the ship at Marghera on 29 October 2019. To reach California, Carnival Panorama made a 38-day positioning voyage across the Atlantic and around the southern tip of South America. The itinerary included calls at Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Montevideo, Santiago, and Puerto Vallarta. She reached the Los Angeles area on 8 December 2019 and transferred to the Port of Long Beach the following day. Vanna White served as godmother at the christening ceremony on 10 December. The ship's first commercial voyage left Long Beach on 11 December 2019, travelling to Ensenada. Carnival then placed her on year-round seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises, generally visiting Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. The deployment continued a major Carnival presence in the Southern California market and took over the weekly Mexican Riviera program previously associated with Carnival Splendor. Carnival Panorama is a large Vista-class ship measuring approximately 133,868 gross tons and 323 metres in length. Her public spaces share many elements with Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon but include a Sky Zone trampoline facility in place of the IMAX theatre used by those earlier ships. Other facilities include the WaterWorks water park, family activities, pools, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and outdoor recreation areas. The ship's first season coincided with the global COVID-19 crisis. On 7 March 2020, a passenger who had become ill prompted a temporary hold on disembarkation at Long Beach while the CDC and local authorities arranged testing. The result was negative, but passengers remained aboard overnight and the next voyage was shortened because of the delay. As the cruise industry suspended normal operations, Carnival Panorama was also involved in returning crew members to their home countries. For a period she was the only Carnival vessel continuing to sail from her homeport, before additional Long Beach operations resumed in 2021. In 2023, Carnival Panorama entered drydock in Portland. Removing the funnel was necessary for the ship to pass under bridges on the Columbia River. In 2024, she received Carnival Cruise Line's newer hull and superstructure color scheme. Her core commercial role remains year-round Mexican Riviera cruising from Long Beach, combining a mass-market vacation proposition with extensive family recreation and onboard entertainment.
