Overview
Carnival Splendor is a Concordia-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line, a brand within Carnival Corporation & plc. Although designed and initially ordered for Costa Cruises, the vessel was transferred to Carnival during construction and entered Carnival service in 2008. It is the only Concordia-class ship in Carnival Cruise Line's fleet and is therefore sometimes described as a Splendor-class vessel. Its Costa-related sister ships operate under the Costa Cruises brand, while Carnival Splendor has a distinct funnel arrangement and Carnival-oriented onboard identity. The ship entered service on 2 July 2008, beginning with a repositioning voyage from Genoa to Dover and an inaugural season serving Northern European ports. At 113,323 gross tons, it was the largest vessel in the Carnival fleet until Carnival Dream entered service in 2009. Myleene Klass served as its godmother and christened it in Dover on 10 July 2008. Carnival Splendor has been used extensively for repositioning and seasonal deployment. In late 2008 it moved to Fort Lauderdale, and in early 2009 it relocated to Long Beach, California. Because its post-Panamax dimensions prevented passage through the Panama Canal at that time, the ship made the longer route around Cape Horn. It subsequently operated year-round Mexican Riviera cruises from Long Beach and later served Caribbean, Bermuda, East Coast, and South Pacific itineraries. Its deployment history reflects Carnival's practice of moving large ships between established cruise regions in response to seasonal demand and fleet planning. The vessel experienced its most consequential operational incident on 8 November 2010, when a fire in the aft engine room followed a failure of its No. 5 diesel generator. The resulting damage to electrical cabling caused a total loss of electrical power. The ship was towed to San Diego after passengers and crew spent several days without normal propulsion, refrigeration, and air-conditioning services. No one aboard was injured, and Carnival offered refunds and future-cruise compensation. Repairs were more extensive than initially expected, and Carnival Splendor returned to service in March 2011. After returning to operation, the ship continued to move among homeports and regions. It was considered for a China deployment in 2018, but Carnival instead returned it to Long Beach for Mexican Riviera cruises. During that repositioning, it became one of the largest ships to pass through the new Panama Canal locks. In 2019, Carnival Splendor left Long Beach for a 24-day transpacific voyage to Singapore, followed by refurbishment and a move to Sydney for year-round Australian operations. The voyage included calls in Hawaii, Guam, Malaysia, and Vietnam and was described as Carnival's longest cruise offering at the time. Australian operations were interrupted during the COVID-19-era disruption to cruising. Carnival canceled the ship's Australia-based cruises through September 2022 amid uncertainty in the local market. Carnival Splendor ultimately returned to service in May 2022, becoming the final ship in the Carnival fleet to resume operations. It later continued Sydney-based South Pacific and regional voyages. A 19-day refurbishment in 2024 added dining options, refreshed public spaces, updated amenities, and Carnival's contemporary navy-blue, red, and white exterior livery. The ship remains an active platform for Carnival's full-service cruise holidays, combining accommodation, dining, entertainment, and port-based excursions.
History
Carnival Splendor was conceived and ordered for Costa Cruises but transferred to Carnival Cruise Line while under construction. The ship belongs to the Concordia class, although it is unique within Carnival's fleet and is sometimes treated as the representative of a Splendor class. It has a different funnel design from the Costa sister ships. With a gross tonnage of 113,323, it was the largest Carnival vessel when it entered service. The ship began commercial service on 2 July 2008 with a voyage from Genoa to Dover, followed by Northern European cruises. Its formal christening took place in Dover on 10 July, with musician and presenter Myleene Klass as godmother. Later in 2008, Carnival repositioned the ship to Fort Lauderdale. In January 2009, it moved to Long Beach, California. Its size prevented it from using the Panama Canal at that time, so the repositioning required a 49-day voyage around Cape Horn. From Long Beach it operated Mexican Riviera cruises and also hosted Mayercraft Carrier 2, a music and comedy cruise associated with John Mayer, in March 2009. On 8 November 2010, during a voyage from Long Beach toward the Mexican Riviera, the No. 5 diesel generator failed and a fire developed in the aft engine room. The fire damaged overhead electrical cable runs and resulted in a loss of shipwide electrical power. The blaze was extinguished without reported injuries, but the vessel could not restore propulsion and was towed to San Diego. Passengers and crew faced the loss of normal air-conditioning and refrigeration, while supplies were delivered with assistance from U.S. Navy helicopters. The U.S. Coast Guard and a Coast Guard cutter also assisted during the incident. Carnival refunded the affected cruise and travel expenses and offered a future-cruise voucher. A joint investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard and Panamanian Maritime Authority later examined the cause; the report was released in 2013. Repairs proved more extensive than originally estimated, and Carnival Splendor resumed service in March 2011. The ship subsequently returned to regular itineraries, although its operating regions changed repeatedly. In 2012, passengers on a Carnival-organized shore excursion in Puerto Vallarta were robbed by an armed bandit; no passengers were injured. In 2013, the ship repositioned around South America to New York for Caribbean and Bermuda voyages. It moved to Florida in 2014 for seasonal seven-day Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, and Carnival later announced seasonal Norfolk service before a return to New York. Carnival announced in 2015 that Carnival Splendor would move to China in 2018, but that plan was abandoned in 2016. Instead, the ship returned to Long Beach in January 2018 for Mexican Riviera cruises. Its repositioning from the Caribbean used the expanded Panama Canal locks, making it one of the largest ships to pass through the new locks. In March 2017, engine trouble off Puerto Rico forced the cancellation of the remainder of a voyage; the ship returned to Miami, and passengers received partial refunds, internet access, and a future-cruise discount. In 2019, Carnival prepared Carnival Splendor for a long-term Australian role. The ship left Long Beach on 5 October for a 24-day transpacific voyage to Singapore, visiting destinations including Maui, Oahu, Guam, Kota Kinabalu, and Ho Chi Minh City. It received work in dry dock before moving to Sydney. This was Carnival's longest cruise offering at the time and marked the end of its Long Beach deployment. The COVID-19-era interruption created further uncertainty. Carnival canceled the ship's Australian cruises through September 2022, then arranged a 23-day voyage from Seattle to Sydney. Carnival Splendor resumed service on 2 May 2022, becoming the last Carnival fleet ship to return to operation. It continued to serve the Australian and South Pacific market. A passenger died during a shore activity near Mystery Island, Vanuatu, in May 2023. In 2024, the ship underwent a 19-day refurbishment that introduced new dining choices, refreshed public spaces, updated amenities, and Carnival's then-current exterior livery. Carnival Splendor remains an active cruise ship rather than a separate corporate brand, with its identity tied to Carnival Cruise Line's mainstream vacation proposition.
