Overview

Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is an Italian manufacturer of luxury sports cars and high-performance SUVs headquartered in Sant'Agata Bolognese. The brand was established in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini, an industrialist whose earlier businesses included tractor manufacturing. He created the automobile company to challenge established grand-tourer and sports-car makers, particularly Ferrari, with products that combined refinement, engineering sophistication, and distinctive styling. Lamborghini's first production car was the 350 GT, introduced in the mid-1960s after the experimental 350 GTV prototype. The company quickly developed a reputation for technically ambitious cars. The Miura, launched in 1966, is widely associated with the popularization of the rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout in high-performance road cars. Later models such as the Countach, Diablo, Murciélago, Gallardo, Aventador, and Huracán established the visual and emotional language now associated with the marque: sharply geometric bodies, theatrical proportions, powerful engines, and highly personalized specifications. The business experienced severe financial pressure after the 1973 economic downturn and oil crisis. Ferruccio Lamborghini sold his interests during the early 1970s, and the company entered bankruptcy proceedings in 1978. It subsequently passed through the control of the Mimran brothers, Chrysler Corporation, and later investment groups before being acquired by the Volkswagen Group in 1998 through Audi. Audi's ownership provided greater financial stability, industrial resources, engineering support, and access to group technologies while preserving Lamborghini's separate design and manufacturing identity. Lamborghini's modern portfolio has expanded beyond two-door supercars. The Urus, introduced as a performance SUV, substantially broadened the company's customer base and production scale. The Revuelto replaced the Aventador as the V12 flagship, combining a naturally aspirated V12 engine with electric motors and plug-in hybrid capability. The Temerario succeeded the Huracán as the mid-engine sports-car line and uses a twin-turbocharged V8 plug-in hybrid system. Lamborghini has also developed motorsport cars, marine engines, licensed merchandise, and customer-racing programs through Squadra Corse. The brand's identity draws heavily on bullfighting. Ferruccio Lamborghini adopted a charging bull as the emblem after visiting the Miura ranch in Spain, and many vehicle names have been connected with famous bulls, bullfighting traditions, or related Spanish references. Lamborghini positions itself at the extreme-luxury end of the performance-car market, emphasizing design drama, exclusivity, craftsmanship, personalization, and technological spectacle rather than volume sales. Its automobiles are sold internationally through a specialized dealer network, while production remains centered in Italy.

History

Ferruccio Lamborghini founded Automobili Lamborghini on 7 May 1963 in Sant'Agata Bolognese. He recruited engineers including Giotto Bizzarrini, Gian Paolo Dallara, Paolo Stanzani, and test driver Bob Wallace, while Franco Scaglione worked on the first prototype's body. The 350 GTV remained a one-off concept, but a more restrained Touring-designed version entered production as the 350 GT. It was followed by the 400 GT and 400 GT 2+2, giving the young company an initial range of fast grand tourers. The 1966 Miura was Lamborghini's decisive breakthrough. Its transversely mounted, rear mid-engine layout placed the powertrain within the wheelbase and influenced the architecture of later high-performance sports cars. The Espada broadened the range with a four-seat grand tourer, while the Countach, introduced in the 1970s, established the angular wedge-shaped design language that became central to Lamborghini's identity. Economic conditions damaged the business after the 1973 oil crisis and global downturn. Ferruccio sold a majority interest in 1972 and later disposed of his remaining stake, retiring from the automobile company. Lamborghini entered bankruptcy in 1978 and was managed by the Mimran brothers from 1980. Their ownership funded expansion and supported models such as the Countach, Jalpa, and LM002, the latter an unusual high-performance off-road vehicle. Chrysler acquired Lamborghini in 1987. During this period the company developed the Diablo as the successor to the Countach and continued to cultivate its image as an exotic, technologically ambitious marque. Chrysler sold the business in 1994 to MegaTech, after which Malaysian and Indonesian investment groups became involved. In 1998, the Volkswagen Group acquired Lamborghini through Audi. Audi's industrial backing helped stabilize the company, improve development and manufacturing capabilities, and create a more systematic product strategy. The Audi era produced a succession of major models, including the Murciélago, Gallardo, Aventador, and Huracán. The Gallardo in particular expanded production volume and introduced a more accessible entry point without abandoning Lamborghini's styling and performance character. The Urus, launched in the late 2010s, transformed the scale of the business by bringing Lamborghini design and performance into the luxury-SUV segment. Lamborghini has progressively adopted electrification. The Revuelto replaced the Aventador with a V12 plug-in hybrid configuration, while the Temerario replaced the Huracán with a twin-turbocharged V8 hybrid system. The company also operates Squadra Corse customer-racing programs, produces racing versions of road cars, participates in international motorsport through customer teams, and supplies V12 marine engines for offshore powerboat racing. Lamborghini Trattori, founded separately by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1948, is not the same corporate automobile business and has operated as a separate entity since 1973.
