Overview

Volkswagen is a German automobile brand headquartered in Wolfsburg and the principal passenger-car marque of Volkswagen AG, the company at the center of Volkswagen Group. Its name combines the German words Volk, meaning people, and Wagen, meaning car or wagon. The brand was established in 1937 around the politically sponsored “people’s car” project, whose stated ambition was to make private motoring accessible to ordinary German households. The project was developed under the German Labour Front and used Ferdinand Porsche’s engineering work, while the body design was substantially associated with Erwin Komenda. Its origins are inseparable from Nazi Germany, wartime industrial production and the extensive use of forced labour at the factory; this history remains an important part of the company’s institutional record. The factory at what became Wolfsburg produced little civilian output before the Second World War. During the war it manufactured military vehicles, including the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen, and relied heavily on forced labour. After the factory was taken over by British forces in 1945, British Army officer Ivan Hirst helped restore production. A British order for 20,000 vehicles provided the initial commercial basis for the post-war enterprise. Heinrich Nordhoff subsequently led the company and concentrated resources on the Type 1, later known internationally as the Beetle. The model’s simple engineering, distinctive rounded body and low operating cost made it a symbol of West Germany’s post-war recovery and gave Volkswagen a durable international identity. Volkswagen expanded beyond the Beetle with the Type 2 van, the Karmann Ghia and growing export operations. The company entered the United States and other overseas markets during the 1950s, established regional production and distribution capabilities, and became increasingly important within Germany’s automotive economy. In 1960 Volkswagenwerk GmbH became Volkswagenwerk AG. The company later broadened its industrial base through investments and acquisitions, including Audi, and developed into the multi-brand Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen’s advertising in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s, particularly work associated with Doyle Dane Bernbach, helped make the Beetle culturally distinctive by presenting its small size and unconventional appearance as advantages rather than shortcomings. The launch of the Golf in 1974 was a major turning point. Replacing the Beetle’s rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a modern front-engine, front-wheel-drive format, the Golf established a durable compact-car platform for Volkswagen and became one of the best-known nameplates in the industry. The Passat extended the brand toward larger family and business-oriented vehicles, while later products such as the Polo, Touran, Tiguan and other SUVs broadened its coverage of the mass-market passenger-vehicle sector. Volkswagen has also offered estate cars, performance variants, people carriers, commercial-derived passenger vehicles and market-specific models. In the 21st century, Volkswagen increased its reliance on shared modular vehicle architectures, global production networks and joint ventures, particularly in China. The brand’s reputation was severely damaged by the 2015 diesel-emissions scandal, in which regulators found that certain diesel vehicles used software capable of recognizing emissions tests and altering operating behavior. The episode triggered recalls, investigations, litigation, penalties and long-term reputational consequences. It also increased the strategic urgency of electrification. Volkswagen subsequently established the ID. battery-electric family and made dedicated electric platforms, battery systems, software and charging partnerships central to its transformation. Volkswagen remains active in combustion-engine, hybrid-related and battery-electric vehicle markets, although the precise range differs by country. It positions itself as a b…

History

Volkswagen was created in 1937 as the organizational and industrial vehicle for Germany’s state-backed people’s-car project. The enterprise was connected to the German Labour Front and the Strength Through Joy program. Ferdinand Porsche’s engineering team developed a rear-engined, air-cooled family car, with Erwin Komenda associated with the body design. The factory was built at a newly planned settlement that later became Wolfsburg. Civilian production was interrupted by the Second World War, when the plant manufactured military vehicles and used forced labour, including prisoners from concentration-camp systems. After the factory came under British control in 1945, Ivan Hirst organized repairs, parts production and a limited restart. A British Army order for 20,000 vehicles prevented the plant from being dismantled and supplied the basis for post-war production. Heinrich Nordhoff became the leading post-war executive and concentrated on the Type 1 Beetle, while Volkswagen added the Type 2 van and Karmann Ghia. The Beetle became an export success, first in Europe and later in North America and other regions. Volkswagen’s distinctive advertising helped reposition the car’s small size and unconventional styling as positive attributes. Volkswagenwerk GmbH became Volkswagenwerk AG in 1960. The company subsequently expanded through acquisitions and industrial relationships, including the development of Audi within the emerging multi-brand group. The 1974 Golf represented a fundamental product transition to front-wheel drive and a more contemporary hatchback format. The Passat and Polo broadened the range, and later SUVs and multipurpose vehicles made the brand less dependent on traditional compact sedans and hatchbacks. During the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Volkswagen developed international manufacturing and sales operations, including substantial joint-venture activity in China and production in Brazil and other countries. Modular platforms enabled greater commonality across vehicles, engines and components. The company’s historical treatment of forced labour and its conduct in Brazil during military rule have generated continuing scrutiny. The 2015 diesel-emissions scandal damaged Volkswagen’s reputation and resulted in regulatory action, vehicle recalls, litigation and substantial changes in corporate priorities. Volkswagen responded by increasing investment and attention toward battery-electric vehicles. The ID. family and dedicated electric architectures became the principal public expression of the brand’s transition. Volkswagen currently sells a market-dependent combination of combustion, hybrid-related and battery-electric vehicles and remains the flagship passenger-car brand within Volkswagen Group.

Volkswagen recalls 22,524 ID.4 SUVs in the US over battery fire risk

Volkswagen launched a recall in the United States covering 22,524 ID.4 electric SUVs from the 2023-2026 model years, with documents filed with NHTSA, because the high-voltage batteries supplied by SK Battery America pose a fire risk. VW's investigation found that under certain charging conditions, charging above 80% can cause thermal runaway in some vehicles' batteries, but the root cause has not yet been fully identified; VW estimates only about 0.1% of the recalled vehicles have an actual hardware defect. VW received 22 related owner complaints in the US between early 2024 and August 2026 and finalized the recall plan in late September 2026. Interim measures include warning stickers reminding owners not to charge above 80% and, for connected vehicles, an expected OTA update to cap maximum charging at 80%, while the permanent fix remains in development.
