Overview

Audi is a German premium automobile brand and the principal luxury-car marque of Volkswagen Group. The brand is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, while its larger-vehicle production and specialist engineering activities are closely associated with the Neckarsulm site. Audi vehicles are produced through a global manufacturing network, with facilities and partnerships serving customers in major automotive markets across Europe, North America, Asia and other regions. The brand's roots are connected to engineer August Horch. After leaving his first Horch automobile company in 1909, Horch established a new business in Zwickau. Because he could no longer use his surname as a trademark, the company adopted Audi, the Latin imperative related to the German word horch, meaning to listen or hear. Audi's first cars appeared in 1910. The company developed technically ambitious vehicles, including increasingly powerful four- and six-cylinder models, and became associated with sporting competition and engineering innovation. Audi's corporate ancestry became more complex during the interwar period. In 1932, Audi, Horch, DKW and Wanderer combined to form Auto Union. The four interlinked rings represent those four constituent companies. Before the Second World War, the individual marques continued to have distinct identities, while Auto Union increasingly concentrated on smaller DKW vehicles and advanced racing technology. The war brought severe disruption and involved forced labor and the use of prisoner labor at Auto Union facilities, a part of the company's history later examined in an independent historical study. After the war, the Auto Union organization was rebuilt in West Germany, with Ingolstadt becoming its administrative and operational center. Daimler-Benz acquired control during the late 1950s, but Volkswagen purchased an initial stake in 1964 and obtained full control soon afterward. Volkswagen revived the Audi name in 1965 with the F103 series, replacing the declining DKW identity with a modern four-stroke range. The Audi 100, developed under the leadership of engineer Ludwig Kraus, became a decisive commercial success in the late 1960s. The Audi 80 followed in 1972 and provided important technical and commercial foundations for later Volkswagen Group front-wheel-drive models. The 1969 merger of Auto Union with NSU Motorenwerke created the corporate predecessor of today's Audi organization. NSU contributed engineering expertise, including experience with rotary engines and advanced vehicle design. Over subsequent decades Audi expanded from conventional front-wheel-drive cars into executive sedans, performance vehicles, sport-utility vehicles and battery-electric models. The quattro all-wheel-drive system, introduced through Audi's rally and road-car programs, became one of the brand's most recognizable technologies and a central part of its performance identity. Audi's current portfolio spans compact, midsize and executive passenger cars; Q-series SUVs and crossover vehicles; high-performance S and RS derivatives; the R8 sports car; and electric models marketed under the e-tron designation. The brand positions itself around premium materials, restrained and technologically oriented styling, digital interfaces, engineering performance and the slogan Vorsprung durch Technik, commonly translated as Progress through Technology. Audi Sport GmbH develops specialist performance products, including RS models and the R8, and is based at Neckarsulm. Audi is a wholly owned Volkswagen Group subsidiary rather than an independently listed company. It operates alongside brands including Volkswagen, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini and other group marques. Its competitive set in the global premium-car market includes BMW and Mercedes-Benz, as well as other luxury and electric-vehicle manufacturers. The brand continues to balance internal-combustion, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric products while adapting its manufacturing footprint a…

History

Audi's history combines the independent development of the Audi marque with the corporate histories of Horch, DKW, Wanderer and NSU. August Horch founded his first automobile company in Cologne in 1899 and moved it to Saxony. After leaving that business in 1909, he established a second company in Zwickau. A trademark dispute prevented him from continuing to use Horch as the company name, so his associates adopted Audi, a Latin rendering of the imperative form of horchen, or to listen. Audi Automobilwerke was entered in the Zwickau commercial register in 1910, and its first automobiles were produced that year. The early Audi company built four-cylinder and later six-cylinder cars. Its vehicles participated in sporting events and incorporated developments that were significant for the German market, including the early adoption of left-hand drive on a production model. Financial and competitive pressures later weakened the independent company. DKW owner Jørgen Rasmussen acquired a controlling interest in Audiwerke in 1928. In 1932, Audi, Horch, DKW and Wanderer merged into Auto Union. The four-ring badge represented the four companies, although the individual marques continued to appear on most road vehicles. Auto Union's engineering program produced technically notable front-wheel-drive cars and successful racing machines, but the group's mass-market business increasingly relied on DKW's smaller vehicles. Audi-badged production ended in 1939, and the name disappeared from the market for roughly a quarter-century. The Second World War caused extensive damage to Auto Union's factories and operations. The company's later historical research found that Auto Union used forced labor and operated or participated in a network of labor camps. This legacy is an important part of Audi's corporate history. After the war, the Soviet occupation of eastern Germany prevented the old organization from continuing in its previous form. The Zwickau facilities became part of the East German state-owned industrial system, while former Auto Union executives rebuilt the company in Ingolstadt in western Germany from 1949. The postwar Auto Union initially manufactured DKW vehicles, including two-stroke cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles. Daimler-Benz acquired a major stake in the late 1950s and then full control, but the company's aging product line did not align with Daimler-Benz's principal priorities. Volkswagen acquired a 50 percent stake in 1964 and took complete control during the following two years. Volkswagen first used the Ingolstadt operation to supplement its own production, but engineers also developed a modern four-stroke model that was sold under the resurrected Audi name as the F103 series. The Audi 100, launched in 1968, was a turning point. Developed initially without full support from Volkswagen management, the car demonstrated that Audi could operate as a successful independent premium brand within the Volkswagen organization. The Audi 80, introduced in 1972, reinforced the brand's commercial position and supplied a technical basis for Volkswagen Group's later water-cooled, front-wheel-drive family of vehicles. Auto Union merged with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969, forming Audi NSU Auto Union AG. NSU brought the Neckarsulm factory and a history of motorcycle and automobile innovation, including work on rotary engines and advanced lightweight designs. The company was subsequently consolidated around the Audi name. Neckarsulm became a major center for larger Audi models and later for high-performance development. From the 1980s onward, quattro four-wheel drive and Audi's rally program strengthened the brand's performance and engineering image. Audi expanded its range from compact and midsize cars into executive sedans, estates, coupes, convertibles, SUVs and dedicated sports cars. The company also developed the S and RS performance families and the R8 through its specialist performance organization, now known as Audi Sport GmbH. In the twenty-first century Audi broadened its SUV portfolio and began a major transition toward electrification. The e-tron name became associated with battery-electric and electrified products, while the Q-series became a central part of the global range. Production of the Q4 e-tron at Zwickau in 2021 symbolized the return of Audi manufacturing to a site connected with the marque's early history. Today Audi remains a wholly owned Volkswagen Group brand with global operations, competing primarily in the premium segment against BMW, Mercedes-Benz and other luxury and technology-focused manufacturers.
