Overview

Domaine Chandon California is a winery in Yountville, Napa Valley, established in 1973 by the French Champagne house Moët et Chandon. Its creation made it the first French-owned sparkling-wine producer in Napa Valley and represented an early effort by a major Champagne producer to develop California wine operations using local vineyards and the traditional Champagne grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and Pinot Meunier. The estate combines wine production with hospitality. A restaurant opened alongside the winery and later became known as Etoile in 2006. Etoile closed in December 2014, when the property was repurposed to allow expansion of the winery’s tasting-room facilities. The site has therefore served not only as a production and cellar-door destination but also as a prominent Napa Valley food-and-wine venue. Domaine Chandon’s vineyards extend across several Napa Valley appellations, including Los Carneros, Mt. Veeder, and Yountville. The winery makes sparkling wines as well as still wines, drawing on the region’s varied growing conditions and on grape varieties associated with Champagne production. Its California identity is consequently built around the intersection of French sparkling-wine expertise, Napa Valley viticulture, and destination hospitality. The California winery is part of a broader Chandon family of wineries associated with Moët Hennessy. Sister operations have been established in Mendoza in Argentina, the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia, Brazil, and Ningxia in China. This international network extends the Chandon name beyond California while retaining a common association with sparkling wine and premium wine tourism.

History

Domaine Chandon California was founded in 1973 in Yountville by Moët et Chandon, making it the first French-owned sparkling-wine producer in Napa Valley. The establishment reflected the growing interest of established European wine houses in California’s viticultural potential and created a bridge between Champagne winemaking traditions and Napa Valley production. The winery was associated for more than two decades with businessman John Wright, who led the operation during an important period of its development. From its beginning, the property was designed as more than a production facility: a restaurant opened at the same time as the winery. Udo Nechutnys served as the restaurant’s first chef, followed by Philippe Jeanty, who later opened Bistro Jeanty in Yountville. This early combination of winery, restaurant, and visitor experience helped establish the property as part of Napa Valley’s destination-wine culture. The restaurant was renamed Etoile in 2006. It continued as a dining component of the estate until closing in December 2014. The closure made space for an expansion of the winery’s tasting-room facilities, shifting the property’s hospitality emphasis toward wine-focused visitor services. Domaine Chandon developed vineyard sources in multiple Napa Valley appellations, including Los Carneros, Mt. Veeder, and Yountville. Its wines include both sparkling and still styles and use Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and Pinot Meunier, the principal grape varieties traditionally associated with Champagne. The resulting identity is rooted in French sparkling-wine technique but expressed through California vineyards and regional wine production. The California operation forms part of a wider group of Chandon wineries linked to Moët Hennessy. Sister wineries operate in Mendoza, Argentina; the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia; Brazil; and Ningxia, China. Together, these operations represent an international expansion of the Chandon concept into major and developing wine regions, while Domaine Chandon California remains the original Napa Valley expression of the brand.

  • Sparkling wine

    Sparkling wines

Domaine Chandon California’s core category is sparkling wine, reflecting the winery’s origin under the Champagne producer Moët et Chandon. The wines are made from grape varieties traditionally used in Champagne, including Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and Pinot Meunier, but are produced from California vineyard sources and express the region’s distinct climate and appellations.

  • Still wine

In addition to sparkling wine, the winery produces still wines from California-grown grapes. The documented varieties include Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and Pinot Meunier.
