Overview

Bulgari, often stylized as BVLGARI, is an Italian luxury house founded in Rome in 1884 by the Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris. The company developed from a specialist jewelry shop into an internationally recognized brand whose activities span high jewelry, watches, fragrances, leather goods, accessories, eyewear, and hotels and resorts. Its identity combines Italian architectural references, vivid gemstones, precious-metal craftsmanship, and a distinctive preference for bold, structured forms over the more restrained traditions associated with some Parisian jewelry houses. Voulgaris came from a family of silversmiths in Epirus, then part of the Ottoman Empire and now in Greece. After early commercial activity in the region and a move to Italy, he established a jewelry business in Rome. The Via Condotti store, opened in 1905, became the brand’s historic flagship and remains closely associated with Bulgari’s Roman identity. The company’s early work drew on Byzantine, Islamic, and floral influences. During the early twentieth century it also absorbed contemporary European styles, including platinum-set Art Deco jewelry and geometric diamond designs. After Sotirios Voulgaris died in 1932, his sons Giorgio and Costantino continued the business. The postwar period was particularly important for Bulgari’s design language. Rather than relying exclusively on the intrinsic value of diamonds, the house increasingly emphasized color, combining cabochon-cut stones, yellow gold, and highly symmetrical compositions. This approach became one of its defining signatures. The Serpenti motif, which appeared in bracelet-watches by the late 1940s and was developed through the 1950s and 1960s, became one of the brand’s most recognizable symbols. Bulgari also benefited from Rome’s postwar association with international cinema and the “Hollywood on the Tiber” era, attracting prominent clients and strengthening its visibility. The company expanded internationally during the 1970s, opening stores in cities including New York, Geneva, Monte Carlo, and Paris. In 1977 it entered modern watchmaking with the BVLGARI BVLGARI watch. During the 1980s, it established a Swiss watchmaking operation and reorganized family leadership. Under chief executive Francesco Trapani, Bulgari pursued broader international growth and progressively diversified beyond jewelry. Fragrances were introduced in 1993, accessories in 1996, and the B.zero1 jewelry line in 1999. During the 2000s, Bulgari expanded its capabilities through acquisitions and partnerships in watchmaking, jewelry, leather goods, and hospitality. It acquired or incorporated activities associated with Daniel Roth, Gérald Genta, and other specialist businesses, while a joint venture with Marriott International led to Bulgari Hotels & Resorts. The first Bulgari hotel opened in Milan in 2004. The brand also developed a stronger presence in leather goods, eyewear, and accessories, with eyewear produced under a licensing arrangement with Luxottica. In 2011, LVMH agreed to acquire Bulgari through an all-share transaction. The Bulgari family exchanged its controlling stake for shares in LVMH, and the transaction was completed in October 2011. Bulgari subsequently became part of LVMH’s watches and jewelry division and was delisted from the Borsa Italiana. Jean-Christophe Babin became chief executive in 2013. Later investments included the modernization of the Via Condotti flagship, the development of the Domvs heritage gallery concept, and the opening in 2017 of a large jewelry manufacturing facility in Valenza, Italy. Today Bulgari operates as a global luxury brand within LVMH. Its principal categories are jewelry, watches, fragrances, accessories, and leather goods, supported by boutiques, e-commerce, hospitality, cultural initiatives, and heritage activities. The brand continues to use Serpenti, B.zero1, Octo, Divas’ Dream, and other established families as platforms for new designs. In 2024 it announced…

History

Bulgari originated in the silversmithing tradition of Epirus. Sotirios Voulgaris moved his commercial activities to Italy and founded the Roman business in 1884. The Via Condotti store opened in 1905 and became the company’s central retail and symbolic location. Early designs combined silverwork with Byzantine, Islamic, floral, and later Art Deco influences. Following Voulgaris’s death in 1932, his sons Giorgio and Costantino led the business. Wartime material shortages shifted production toward gold and more naturalistic forms. In the postwar decades Bulgari developed a more independent visual language, emphasizing colored gemstones, cabochons, yellow gold, strong geometry, and repeatable motifs. Serpenti bracelet-watches emerged in the late 1940s and evolved into a major jewelry family. The brand’s Roman location and association with film celebrities during the 1950s and 1960s helped establish its international luxury profile. The 1970s brought substantial international expansion and the launch of the BVLGARI BVLGARI watch in 1977. In the 1980s the company created a Swiss watchmaking operation, changed its family management structure, and began presenting jewelry in a more accessible, everyday luxury format. The 1990s brought diversification into fragrances and accessories, while B.zero1, launched in 1999, became a major contemporary jewelry line. In the 2000s Bulgari increased vertical integration and broadened its portfolio through watchmaking and jewelry acquisitions, including activities connected with Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta. It also entered hospitality through Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, created with a Marriott-related partner, and opened its first hotel in Milan in 2004. The 125th anniversary in 2009 was marked by a retrospective in Rome, while Serpenti was reinforced as a central emblem. LVMH’s acquisition in 2011 transformed Bulgari from a publicly traded family-controlled company into a subsidiary of a global luxury group. The transaction was completed in October 2011 and Bulgari was delisted from the Italian exchange. Under Jean-Christophe Babin, appointed chief executive in 2013, the house continued global retail expansion and investment in jewelry, watches, hospitality, digital commerce, heritage, and manufacturing. The Via Condotti flagship was redesigned in 2014, and the Valenza manufacture opened in 2017. In 2024, the announcement of Fondazione Bvlgari formalized another channel for cultural and heritage initiatives.
