Overview
Dior is a French luxury fashion house and multinational luxury-goods brand founded in Paris by Christian Dior in 1946. Its first collection, presented in February 1947, introduced the silhouette later called the New Look: a defined waist, rounded shoulders and a full skirt that contrasted with the austerity and utility of wartime clothing. The collection rapidly established Dior as one of the leading names in postwar haute couture and helped restore Paris’s position at the center of international fashion. The house was created at 30 Avenue Montaigne with financial support from textile entrepreneur Marcel Boussac. Christian Dior retained substantial creative authority and a significant economic interest while operating within Boussac’s broader textile business. From the outset, Dior combined couture with commercial expansion. The house opened an international presence in New York, developed licensing arrangements for accessories and other goods, and expanded into fragrances, cosmetics, footwear and ready-to-wear. Its licensing strategy, initiated in 1950, made the Dior name visible across a wide range of luxury products and became an influential model for other couture houses. Christian Dior died in 1957, only eleven years after founding the house. The company responded by appointing the young Yves Saint Laurent as artistic director, followed by Marc Bohan, who led the design studio for much of the 1960s and 1970s. Later creative leadership included Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri, among others. Each period reinterpreted Dior’s couture vocabulary while balancing historical references with contemporary fashion, commercial collections and global retail growth. Dior’s business now spans haute couture, women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, leather goods, footwear, jewelry, watches, fragrances, makeup and skincare. Signature products and franchises include the Bar jacket, Lady Dior handbag, Saddle bag, Miss Dior fragrance, J’adore fragrance and Dior Addict beauty line. The brand also operates Dior Men and Baby Dior activities, alongside fashion, jewelry and beauty categories distributed through boutiques, department stores, selected wholesale partners and digital channels. Dior is part of LVMH, the French luxury-goods group. The fashion business is conducted through Christian Dior Couture, while Dior beauty activities operate within the group’s relevant corporate structure. The house remains headquartered in Paris and maintains a global network of boutiques and online markets. Its positioning combines French haute couture heritage, highly visible design codes, celebrity and cultural associations, craftsmanship, premium materials and broad international brand recognition.
History
The House of Dior was established in Paris on 16 December 1946 at 30 Avenue Montaigne. Christian Dior received financial backing from Marcel Boussac, whose textile interests provided the industrial and commercial foundation for the new couture business. Dior had been invited to work on an existing label but preferred to create a house under his own name. The enterprise began with a substantial workforce for a new couture house and operated within Boussac’s vertically integrated textile organization. Dior presented its first collection on 12 February 1947. The lines were initially called Corolle and Huit, but the presentation became famous as the New Look after Carmel Snow of Harper’s Bazaar praised its novelty. The collection emphasized a narrow waist, rounded shoulders and a generous skirt, with the Bar suit becoming one of its most recognizable expressions. The silhouette was celebrated as a glamorous alternative to wartime austerity and helped reassert Parisian couture’s international importance. It also attracted criticism: some observers objected to its use of fabric during rationing, while others criticized corseted construction and what they regarded as restrictive ideas about femininity. Dior expanded rapidly. Its first fragrance, Miss Dior, was launched in the late 1940s, and the house established a New York presence in 1948–49. In 1950, general manager Jacques Rouët developed a licensing program that extended the Dior name beyond couture into accessories and other luxury categories. The company added shoes with Roger Vivier, introduced beauty products and opened boutiques and licensed operations in several international markets. By the middle of the 1950s, Dior had become a fashion empire with strong links to Hollywood, European aristocracy and the American market. Christian Dior died of a heart attack in October 1957. The house avoided closure by promoting Yves Saint Laurent, who had joined Dior as an assistant. Saint Laurent’s first collections were acclaimed, but his increasingly experimental direction and subsequent military service brought his short tenure to an end. Marc Bohan became artistic director in 1960 and gave the house a more restrained, wearable and commercially durable design language. During Bohan’s tenure, Dior continued expanding fragrances, ready-to-wear and children’s clothing, while maintaining a strong couture identity. Later decades brought successive creative reinterpretations. Gianfranco Ferré led the house from 1989, followed by John Galliano in 1996. Galliano made highly theatrical historical references a central part of Dior’s runway image while strengthening the visibility of its accessories and global marketing. After Galliano’s departure in 2011, Raf Simons became artistic director and revisited Dior’s archival codes through a more streamlined and modern approach. Maria Grazia Chiuri took over womenswear in 2016 and emphasized a contemporary, often feminist interpretation of Dior’s heritage. Dior has progressively developed into a diversified luxury brand covering couture, ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, jewelry, watches and beauty. Its flagship products operate as durable brand symbols, while seasonal collections and collaborations refresh the commercial offer. The house now belongs to LVMH and operates internationally through boutiques, department stores, selected wholesale distribution and digital commerce. Its Paris headquarters and Avenue Montaigne heritage remain central to its identity, even as production, retail and communication activities serve customers worldwide.
