Overview
Carnival Vista is a large cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line and the first vessel in the Vista class. The class was later expanded with Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama for Carnival Cruise Line, together with Costa Venezia and Costa Firenze for the Costa Cruises brand. Carnival Vista was constructed by Fincantieri at Monfalcone in Italy and was designed as a major fleet platform for Carnival's contemporary, family-oriented cruise product. Construction began with the cutting of the first steel in February 2014. The keel was laid in October 2014, and the ship's float-out and coin ceremony took place in June 2015. Sea trials were completed in March 2016, followed by delivery to Carnival Cruise Line on April 28, 2016. The ship was the first Carnival vessel since Carnival Miracle to use ABB azipod propulsion units. At the time of its introduction, it was the largest ship in Carnival Cruise Line's fleet by gross tonnage, a distinction it held until the arrival of sister ship Carnival Horizon in 2018. Carnival Vista began commercial service on May 1, 2016, departing Trieste, Italy, on a 13-day European voyage that ended in Barcelona. Its launch season focused on Mediterranean cruising. The ship was subsequently repositioned to New York for a limited series of sailings before moving to Miami in November 2016. From Miami it operated year-round Caribbean cruises, including itineraries visiting destinations such as Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. In September 2018, Carnival Vista moved to Galveston, Texas. From that port, its principal itineraries included western Caribbean combinations such as Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Montego Bay, as well as routes calling at Cozumel, Belize and Roatán. In November 2023, the ship transferred its home port to Port Canaveral near Orlando, Florida, where it continued serving Caribbean cruise markets. The move followed the arrival of Carnival Jubilee, which replaced Carnival Vista in Galveston. The vessel has experienced several operational and safety-related events during its service. In August 2016, its wake caused extensive damage at the tourist harbor of Marina del Nettuno near Messina, Italy. In June 2019, Carnival cancelled three scheduled voyages because of propulsion-system performance problems. Repairs to an azipod were carried out with the heavy-lift vessel BOKA Vanguard serving as a floating dry dock. Carnival Vista also temporarily lost power while sailing through the Gulf of Mexico in July 2019, and propulsion problems were reported again in August 2024. In November 2019, an independent bus excursion involving passengers in Belize crashed, causing two deaths and five injuries. In March 2020, a passenger was charged in connection with an alleged assault involving a teenage boy aboard the ship. During the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting indicated that at least one person who had disembarked from the ship later tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 within the relevant monitoring period. Carnival Vista remains an active Carnival Cruise Line ship. In 2024 it received Carnival Cruise Line's updated corporate livery, visually aligning the vessel with the company's contemporary fleet identity. Its commercial proposition combines destination-based cruise holidays with onboard accommodation, dining, entertainment and recreational facilities, and is positioned within Carnival's mainstream mass-market cruise offering rather than as an independent consumer brand.
History
Carnival Vista is the lead vessel of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class. The ship was built by Fincantieri at Monfalcone, Italy. First steel was cut in February 2014, the keel was laid in October 2014, and the vessel was floated out during a coin ceremony in June 2015. Sea trials took place in March 2016, and delivery followed on April 28, 2016. The vessel was the first Carnival Cruise Line ship to use ABB azipod propulsion units since Carnival Miracle, which entered service in 2004. By gross tonnage, Carnival Vista was the largest ship in Carnival Cruise Line's fleet when it entered service. It was later surpassed by its sister ship Carnival Horizon, delivered in 2018. The Vista class ultimately included Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama for Carnival Cruise Line, as well as Costa Venezia and Costa Firenze for Costa Cruises. Carnival Vista's maiden voyage departed Trieste on May 1, 2016, for a 13-day European cruise ending in Barcelona. The ship spent its inaugural season in the Mediterranean, then operated a pair of cruises from New York before moving to Miami in November 2016. It sailed year-round from Miami until September 2018, when it transferred to Galveston, Texas. Galveston itineraries primarily served the western Caribbean, with calls including Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, Belize and Roatán. In November 2023, the vessel moved to Port Canaveral near Orlando, Florida, while Carnival Jubilee replaced it in Galveston. The ship's operational history has included several notable incidents. In August 2016, its wake damaged Marina del Nettuno's tourist harbor near Messina. In June 2019, three cruises were cancelled because of propulsion-system performance problems, and an azipod was repaired using BOKA Vanguard as a floating dry dock. A temporary loss of power occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in July 2019. In November 2019, an independent bus excursion involving passengers in Belize crashed, killing two people and injuring five. In March 2020, a man was charged over an alleged assault involving a teenage boy aboard the ship. CDC reporting during the COVID-19 pandemic also identified at least one post-disembarkation SARS-CoV-2 positive case associated with the vessel. Further propulsion problems were reported in August 2024. The ship received Carnival Cruise Line's updated livery in 2024 and remains in active service.
