Overview

Tata Communications Limited is an Indian telecommunications and digital infrastructure company headquartered in Mumbai. It operates within the Tata Group and serves multinational enterprises, communications service providers, media organizations and public-sector customers across more than 190 countries and territories. Its portfolio spans international connectivity, cloud networking, cybersecurity, collaboration, Internet of Things services, managed communications, media transmission and digital infrastructure. The company began in March 1986 as Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited, or VSNL, a government-owned enterprise created to manage India's international telecommunications services. It took over the functions of the Overseas Communications Service under the Ministry of Communications and became a central operator in India's international voice and data links. Under chairman B. K. Syngal, VSNL launched India's first publicly available Internet service in August 1995, an important milestone in the country's early Internet market. Following the Indian government's disinvestment program, the Tata Group acquired control of VSNL in 2002. The company subsequently expanded from an India-centered international carrier into a global communications platform. It established VSNL International in 2004, acquired the Tyco Global Network submarine cable system in 2005, and purchased Teleglobe International Holdings in 2006. These transactions enlarged its subsea, wholesale voice, data and enterprise-service capabilities. The business adopted the Tata Communications name in February 2008. Its network assets include a Tier-1 Internet backbone and a wholly owned subsea fiber-optic system extending for more than 500,000 kilometers. The network supports international Ethernet, software-defined wide-area networking, cloud access, content delivery, voice, video and other carrier-grade services. The company has also developed data-center and cloud connectivity capabilities, including IZO, introduced in 2014 to connect enterprises securely to multiple cloud providers through a single managed platform. Tata Communications has broadened through acquisitions and partnerships in content delivery, mobile virtual network enablement, eSIM technology, live video, enterprise messaging and artificial-intelligence-enabled software. Notable transactions include BitGravity, Teleena, Oasis Smart SIM, The Switch Enterprises and Kaleyra. In 2025 it acquired a majority stake in Commotion, an AI-focused software company, supporting its strategy around cloud, connectivity and AI workloads. The company operates through broad voice and data activities. Its data portfolio includes network connectivity, cloud and multi-cloud access, SD-WAN, cybersecurity, collaboration, IoT, media services and digital infrastructure. Its Digital Fabric concept integrates network, cloud, interaction and IoT capabilities through common orchestration. Tata Communications has also been a long-term technology partner of Formula One, providing connectivity and, after the partnership's renewal in 2022, broadcast transmission support between race venues and the sport's media operations in the United Kingdom. Tata Communications remains listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India. The Government of India completed the sale of its remaining 26.12 percent stake in March 2021, ending its ownership nearly two decades after privatization. The company has set a target of net-zero carbon emissions across global operations by 2035 and uses sustainability-linked financing mechanisms that connect borrowing costs with emissions-reduction performance.

History

Tata Communications originated as Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited, established by the Government of India in March 1986 as a public-sector undertaking responsible for the country's international telecommunications services. The new organization absorbed the operations of the Overseas Communications Service, which had operated under the Ministry of Communications. Its original role centered on international voice and data traffic, but liberalization and the growth of digital communications gradually broadened its importance. During the chairmanship of B. K. Syngal from 1991 to 1998, VSNL launched India's first publicly available Internet service in August 1995. This placed the company at the center of India's early commercial Internet development. The government later introduced a disinvestment program, and the Tata Group acquired control of VSNL in 2002. The transaction transformed the company from a state-controlled international carrier into a Tata-owned global communications business. VSNL International was created in 2004 as the company's international arm. That year, VSNL also acquired the broadband assets of DishnetDSL through a slump-sale transaction. In 2005 it purchased the Tyco Global Network submarine cable system, a roughly 60,000-kilometer undersea network, for approximately US$130 million. The acquisition provided a major international backbone and became central to the development of the Tata Global Network. In 2006 the company acquired Teleglobe International Holdings, adding international voice, data and value-added services. The company changed its name to Tata Communications on 13 February 2008. It continued expanding its physical network and African presence. In 2008 it invested in BitGravity, a United States content-delivery-network company, before acquiring the business in 2011. Tata Communications also agreed in 2008 to acquire a combined 30 percent stake in South African operator Neotel from Eskom and Transnet. The transaction was completed in January 2009, giving Tata Communications control; Neotel was later sold to Liquid Telecom Group in 2017. In August 2009, Tata Communications and Tyco Telecommunications completed the 6,700-kilometer TGN-Intra Asia submarine cable system. The cable linked Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Vietnam and the Philippines and was designed to provide route diversity away from seismically exposed areas near Taiwan. By 2012, the company had completed a Eurasian network section linking Mumbai and Marseille through the Mediterranean and Middle East, contributing to a subsea system that circumnavigated the globe. The business increasingly moved beyond traditional carrier services. It launched IZO in 2014 as a platform for secure enterprise access to multiple cloud providers. In 2016, its data-center network extended across dozens of global locations, while third-party network operators used Tata facilities and cable landing stations to expand high-capacity connectivity. The company acquired Teleena in 2018 after first taking a minority stake, adding mobile virtual network enablement and IoT capabilities. Tata Communications acquired a majority stake in Oasis Smart SIM in 2020 and completed the purchase of the remaining shares in 2023. It also acquired The Switch Enterprises in 2023, expanding live video production and transmission capabilities, and completed the acquisition of Kaleyra in the same year to strengthen enterprise communications and messaging. These moves reflected a strategy of combining network assets with managed digital platforms, media technology and software. The Government of India exited its remaining 26.12 percent shareholding in March 2021. In 2022, Tata Communications renewed its relationship with Formula One as official broadcast connectivity provider after an earlier connectivity agreement had ended following the 2019 season. The company transmits audiovisual feeds from race venues to Formula One's United Kingdom media hub. In 2025, Tata Communications launched Vayu, a cloud fabric platform aimed at multi-cloud and AI workloads, and acquired a 51 percent interest in Commotion, an AI-native SaaS company with operations in the United States and India. The company currently presents itself as a global digital infrastructure provider, with activities spanning connectivity, cloud, cybersecurity, collaboration, IoT, media and managed communications. It has also committed to net-zero emissions across global operations by 2035 and participates in sustainability-linked financing.
