Overview

Air India is the flag carrier of India and one of the country's oldest airline brands. Its origins lie in Tata Airlines, established in 1932 by Indian industrialist and aviator J. R. D. Tata. The initial operation carried mail and passengers within the subcontinent, including the pioneering flight that Tata piloted from Karachi to Bombay, now Mumbai, in October 1932. The enterprise expanded during the 1930s, added destinations such as Delhi and Colombo, and supported wartime transport and aircraft-related work during the Second World War. Tata Airlines became a public company in 1946 and adopted the Air India name. In 1948, the Government of India acquired a minority stake as the company began international operations, including its first service to London. The airline was nationalised in 1953 under the Air Corporations Act. Domestic operations were transferred to Indian Airlines, while Air India International became the principal state-controlled international carrier. J. R. D. Tata remained associated with the company as chairman for many years after nationalisation. Air India became an important symbol of independent India and developed a substantial long-haul network. It was an early adopter of jet aircraft in Asia, receiving its first Boeing 707 in 1960, and later operated Boeing 747, Airbus A310, Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft. Its brand identity became associated with the Maharajah mascot, distinctive Indian design elements and the idea of an Indian national carrier connecting the country with major overseas markets. Air India joined Star Alliance in 2014. The airline experienced increasing financial and operational pressure in the 2000s. The 2007 merger with Indian Airlines was intended to create a stronger unified national airline but was followed by substantial losses, debt accumulation and criticism concerning fleet procurement, integration and management. Several restructuring and privatisation efforts followed. The Indian government first approved a sale process in 2017, but the initial attempt did not attract a successful bidder. A revised process eventually resulted in Tata Sons winning the bid in 2021. The transaction, which also included Air India Express and a stake in ground-handling company AISATS, was completed in January 2022, returning the brand to Tata ownership after almost seven decades of state control. After the acquisition, Tata Group began reorganising its aviation interests. AirAsia India was acquired by Air India and renamed AIX Connect, with plans to combine it with Air India Express. Tata Group also arranged the merger of Air India and Vistara, in which Singapore Airlines became a minority shareholder of the enlarged airline. The Vistara merger was completed in November 2024, and the combined business continued under the Air India brand. Air India now operates as a full-service passenger airline with domestic and international services, cargo-related activities and a fleet built around Airbus and Boeing narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. Its current strategic direction centres on fleet renewal, network expansion, service transformation and integration of Tata Group's airline businesses.

History

Air India's history begins with Tata Sons' aviation department in 1932. J. R. D. Tata secured a contract to carry airmail for Imperial Airways and established Tata Airlines with small de Havilland aircraft. On 15 October 1932, Tata flew the first service from Karachi to Bombay, after which the aircraft continued toward Madras under the control of pilot Nevill Vintcent. Early services linked Karachi, Ahmedabad, Bombay and Madras, and the operation later expanded to destinations including Delhi and Colombo. During the Second World War, the airline assisted with troop movements, supplies, refugee transport and aircraft maintenance. In 1946, Tata Airlines became a public limited company and was renamed Air India. Following Indian independence, the government acquired 49 percent of the airline in 1948. The same year, Air India launched its first international service, from Bombay to London. The state subsequently nationalised the airline industry in 1953. Domestic services were assigned to Indian Airlines, while Air India International focused on international operations. Although ownership passed to the government, J. R. D. Tata continued as chairman until 1977. The airline expanded its overseas network across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. It introduced the Boeing 707 in 1960, making it the first Asian airline to operate a jet aircraft, and became an all-jet airline in 1962. Wide-body operations followed, including Boeing 747 services from the early 1970s. Air India's identity developed around Indian cultural motifs, the Maharajah mascot and the image of a national carrier representing India abroad. Financial difficulties became increasingly visible around the turn of the century. Privatisation discussions in 2000–01 did not produce a completed sale. In 2004, the airline created Air-India Express as a lower-cost subsidiary serving India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Air India and Indian Airlines were merged in 2007 under Air India Limited. The combined airline inherited a complex fleet and organisation and subsequently accumulated significant losses and debt. Government recapitalisation, restructuring studies, route changes and financing exercises were undertaken, while proposals for private ownership continued. Air India's first attempt to join Star Alliance was suspended in 2011 because the airline did not meet the alliance's requirements, but it eventually became the alliance's 27th member in July 2014. The government restarted privatisation in 2017. After an unsuccessful initial process, a revised sale process separated part of the debt and invited new bids. Tata Sons won the competition in October 2021, and the airline was handed over in January 2022. Under Tata ownership, Air India entered a broader aviation consolidation programme. Tata Group acquired AirAsia India's interest, rebranded the business AIX Connect and pursued its combination with Air India Express. It also agreed to merge Air India with Vistara, the Tata-Singapore Airlines joint venture. Regulatory approvals were obtained during 2024 and the merger was completed in November of that year. The present Air India organisation therefore combines a pre-independence Tata origin, a long period as a state-owned flag carrier and a new phase of private ownership, fleet renewal and group integration.
