Overview

Fujifilm is the principal international brand of Fujifilm Holdings Corporation, a Japanese multinational technology group headquartered in Tokyo. The company was established in 1934 as Fuji Photo Film, a subsidiary of Daicel, to manufacture photographic film for the Japanese market. Photography remains part of the business, but Fujifilm has spent decades applying its expertise in chemistry, precision coating, optics, electronics, image processing, and materials engineering to sectors well beyond consumer cameras. Its current activities span photographic film and paper, digital cameras and lenses, instant photography, optical devices, document and workplace technology, graphic-arts equipment, medical imaging, healthcare information systems, pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing, regenerative medicine, specialty chemicals, display materials, and magnetic data-storage media. The group also supplies technologies used in television lenses, flat-panel displays, printing, radiography, endoscopy, ultrasound, and laboratory and manufacturing workflows. Fujifilm’s photography portfolio is led by the X Series of interchangeable-lens cameras and lenses, the GFX line of large-sensor medium-format cameras, and the Instax ecosystem of instant cameras, printers, and film. It also continues to sell selected color negative, slide, and black-and-white films, including Fujicolor, Fujichrome, and Neopan products. These businesses serve both professional users and enthusiasts, with product differentiation built around image quality, color science, compact design, optical performance, and film-inspired workflows. The company’s strategic identity changed substantially as digital imaging reduced demand for traditional photographic film. Rather than relying solely on the shrinking film market, Fujifilm used its accumulated know-how in thin-film coating, emulsions, diagnostics, chemicals, and imaging to diversify into healthcare, electronic materials, printing, and life sciences. Its computed-radiography technology and later digital medical systems helped establish a substantial healthcare presence. Acquisitions and investments expanded its diagnostic-imaging, biologics manufacturing, and pharmaceutical capabilities. A major organizational transition occurred in 2006, when Fuji Photo Film became part of a holding-company structure and adopted the Fujifilm Holdings name. The former Fuji Xerox relationship with Xerox was progressively unwound: Fujifilm acquired Xerox’s interest in the joint venture in 2019, and the business was renamed Fujifilm Business Innovation in 2021. This left Fujifilm with a wholly owned business-technology operation alongside its imaging, healthcare, materials, and life-science businesses. Today, Fujifilm operates internationally through a large network of subsidiaries and regional companies. It is simultaneously a consumer-facing photography brand, a supplier of professional imaging and printing systems, and a business-to-business technology group. Its transformation from film manufacturer to diversified technology company is the defining feature of its modern positioning.

History

Fuji Photo Film was founded in 1934 as a Daicel subsidiary to produce photographic film in Japan. During the 1940s it broadened its technical base into optical glass, lenses, and related equipment. From the mid-1950s onward, the company created overseas sales operations, followed by international manufacturing and other facilities during the 1980s. The postwar business initially centered on film, photographic paper, cameras, processing, and optical products. Fujifilm competed with Kodak in a market shaped by strong national positions and extensive distribution networks. Its sponsorship of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, lower-priced film offerings, and establishment of manufacturing capacity in the United States helped increase its visibility and market share there. At the same time, Fujifilm invested in digital technologies. It adapted imaging and materials expertise to medical and printing applications and developed computed radiography, marketed through its FCR systems. This technology replaced parts of the conventional radiographic workflow with photostimulable plates and digital processing, helping reduce some limitations associated with traditional X-ray methods. The company faced a serious corporate-ethics episode in the 1990s. In 1994, vice president Juntaro Suzuki said Fujifilm would stop paying sokaiya, individuals who used threats or disruption to extract payments from companies. Suzuki was later killed outside his home. The episode became part of the company’s public history and Japan’s broader debate about corporate links to organized crime. In 1995, Kodak challenged Fujifilm’s competitive position in Japan through a petition under section 301 of the United States trade law. The United States brought the dispute to the World Trade Organization. In 1998, the WTO rejected Kodak’s central complaints about the Japanese photographic-film market. Fujifilm continued diversifying as digital photography weakened demand for traditional film. It expanded in document technology, graphic arts, medical imaging, electronic materials, data storage, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology. In 1962 it had established Fuji Xerox with Rank Xerox, creating a long-lived document-technology partnership. In 2005 it acquired Sericol, a printing-ink business, and in 2006 announced a strategic relationship with Noritsu concerning photofinishing hardware. A holding-company reorganization announced in 2006 placed Fujifilm and Fuji Xerox under Fujifilm Holdings Corporation. The group later pursued a larger Xerox transaction, announcing in 2018 a proposed acquisition of a controlling stake in Xerox. Investor opposition led to the proposal being abandoned. In 2019 Fujifilm instead acquired Xerox’s remaining interest in Fuji Xerox. The business was renamed Fujifilm Business Innovation, effective in 2021. Healthcare and life sciences became increasingly important areas of expansion. Fujifilm acquired Hitachi’s diagnostic-imaging business in 2019 and invested in biologics manufacturing capacity in Denmark in 2020. Its pharmaceutical subsidiary’s favipiravir product, Avigan, received international attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, although its role was subject to regulatory review and continuing clinical evaluation. Fujifilm remains active in conventional film while operating a much broader portfolio. Its modern identity combines consumer and professional photography with healthcare systems, advanced materials, business technology, printing, storage media, and biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
