Overview
FanDuel Sports Network Southeast is an American regional sports network headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It is operated by Main Street Sports Group, formerly Diamond Sports Group, as part of the FanDuel Sports Network portfolio. The channel serves a designated territory covering Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and portions of North Carolina, with its programming centered on professional teams based in Atlanta, Tennessee and Charlotte. It has also been distributed nationwide to eligible DirecTV subscribers and, more recently, through digital subscription platforms. The network began as Turner South, launched by Turner Broadcasting System on October 1, 1999. Its original concept was broader than a conventional regional sports channel: it combined movies, comedy and drama programming, regional news updates and original entertainment with sports coverage. The network carried events involving Turner-connected teams, including the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association and the Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League. Turner South was designed specifically for viewers in the southern United States, and its satellite distribution was initially restricted by ZIP-code-based territorial rules. In 2006, News Corporation acquired Turner South for $375 million. The transaction included the network's existing sports agreements and expanded the regional sports presence of the Fox Sports Net family. Turner South was relaunched as SportSouth on October 13, 2006. The new identity removed the general entertainment schedule and converted the service into a sports-focused network, combining regional game broadcasts with locally produced studio programs and nationally supplied sports news, documentary and magazine programming. Over time, SportSouth and the related FSN South service increasingly shared rights involving teams and events across the region. The network also carried selected games involving clubs such as the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals when territorial and league rules allowed. SportSouth's distribution and rights portfolio expanded during the late 2000s. In 2007, it obtained a package of Tennessee Volunteers programming and became available nationwide on DirecTV's Sports Pack, although league-imposed blackouts continued to apply to some events. In 2013, SportSouth and Fox Sports South acquired a package of Atlanta Braves games previously shown by WPCH-TV, ending a long-running arrangement in which Braves games had appeared on broadcast television in the Atlanta market. The channel was renamed Fox Sports Southeast on October 5, 2015. The change was intended to reduce confusion between SportSouth and Fox Sports South after viewer research indicated that audiences misunderstood the relationship between the two services and perceived the Fox Sports South name as having stronger programming. In 2019, the Fox Sports Networks were sold to Sinclair Broadcast Group and Entertainment Studios through Diamond Sports Group. The channel consequently moved into the Bally Sports regional network family and became Bally Sports Southeast on March 31, 2021. Diamond Sports Group entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in March 2023. In October 2024, Diamond announced a sponsorship and branding arrangement with FanDuel Group, under which the Bally regional networks were renamed FanDuel Sports Network services. The Southeast channel adopted its current name on October 21, 2024. Diamond emerged from bankruptcy on January 2, 2025, under the name Main Street Sports Group, which continued operating the network. The network's main business is the production, acquisition and distribution of regional live sports. Its historically prominent properties have included the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA, the Carolina Hurricanes and Nashville Predators of the NHL, and Atlanta Braves baseball. Programming has also included c…
History
FanDuel Sports Network Southeast descends from Turner South, a regional cable channel created by Turner Broadcasting System and launched on October 1, 1999. Turner South was conceived as a broad Southern entertainment service, carrying films, scripted series, comedy, regional updates and original programs alongside sports. Its sports schedule included Atlanta Braves baseball, Atlanta Hawks basketball and Atlanta Thrashers hockey. News Corporation challenged the planned sports component in a 1999 Georgia lawsuit, citing a non-compete arrangement connected to its earlier acquisition of the original SportSouth; the dispute concerned Turner's proposed regional sports activity in the Southeast. News Corporation acquired Turner South in February 2006. The purchase included existing sports contracts and supported News Corporation's effort to consolidate regional sports programming within the Fox Sports Net system. Turner South was renamed SportSouth and relaunched on October 13, 2006, with an NHL game between the Atlanta Thrashers and Carolina Hurricanes serving as the first event under the new identity. The channel abandoned its general entertainment format and became a dedicated sports service. It carried regional games, studio shows, sports news, documentaries and magazine programming. SportSouth initially shared only selected Atlanta team rights with FSN South, but the two networks gradually developed a more integrated rights and distribution model. The channel added selected games involving the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals through a sister network arrangement, subject to MLB territorial restrictions. It also acquired Tennessee Volunteers programming in 2007, including selected football and basketball games, Olympic sports and coaches' shows. That year, SportSouth gained nationwide DirecTV Sports Pack distribution, although league blackout rules continued to restrict particular events outside their permitted territories. The Braves' relationship with the network changed in 2013 when SportSouth and Fox Sports South acquired a 45-game package previously carried by WPCH-TV. The move shifted more of the team's Atlanta-market television presence from broadcast television to regional cable sports. In 2015, SportSouth became Fox Sports Southeast. The rebrand followed audience research indicating confusion between SportSouth and Fox Sports South and uncertainty about their relationship to the wider Fox Sports regional network family. In August 2019, Fox Sports Networks were sold to Sinclair Broadcast Group and Entertainment Studios through Diamond Sports Group. Fox's divestiture was part of the regulatory process surrounding Disney's acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox. On March 31, 2021, Fox Sports Southeast was renamed Bally Sports Southeast. Diamond Sports Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on March 14, 2023, placing the network within a broader restructuring of the regional sports television business. A court filing disclosed in October 2024 described a new sponsorship arrangement between Diamond and FanDuel Group. The Bally regional networks were subsequently renamed FanDuel Sports Network services, with the Southeast channel becoming FanDuel Sports Network Southeast on October 21, 2024. Diamond completed its restructuring on January 2, 2025, emerging as Main Street Sports Group. The operator continued to run the FanDuel-branded networks. The current service combines traditional cable and satellite distribution with streaming initiatives. FanDuel Sports Network channels became available as add-on subscriptions through Prime Video, and selected games could also be purchased through direct-to-consumer products. In 2025, the network offered Atlanta Braves monthly and season-pass packages for in-market viewers. The Braves relationship then changed again in 2026, when the club announced BravesVision, an in-house production and distribution service. Gray Media stations and MLB's Braves.tv were identified as additional outlets for selected Braves telecasts. FanDuel Sports Network Southeast nonetheless remains an active regional network with a portfolio centered on professional and college sports in the Southeast.
