Overview
FanDuel Sports Network Florida is a regional sports television network serving Florida and selected neighboring markets. The network is part of the FanDuel Sports Network group operated by Main Street Sports Group, the successor organization to Diamond Sports Group's regional-sports-network business. Its facilities and offices are located in Fort Lauderdale, alongside those of sister network FanDuel Sports Network Sun. Distribution has historically included cable systems across Florida, portions of southern Alabama and southern Georgia, and nationwide satellite carriage through DirecTV. The channel began on December 29, 1987, as SportsChannel Florida. It was established by Rainbow Media, then a subsidiary of Cablevision Systems Corporation, as the fourth regional network in the SportsChannel America chain. Its early schedule emphasized college sports, including selected games involving the University of Florida, Florida State University, the University of Miami, the University of South Florida and Jacksonville University. It also carried selected baseball games supplied by other SportsChannel outlets, including games involving the New York Yankees, New York Mets and Chicago White Sox. The network expanded into major professional-sports rights in 1988, when it acquired regional cable rights to Miami Heat basketball beginning with the 1988–89 NBA season. The Heat rights moved to the competing Sunshine Network in 1992, although the team later returned to the channel after both networks came under common Fox-related ownership. Ownership changes in the mid-1990s reshaped the network's strategic direction. In 1996, Florida Panthers owner Wayne Huizenga acquired a 70 percent interest, while Rainbow Media retained 30 percent. Under Huizenga's control, Panthers games moved to SportsChannel Florida for the 1996–97 season. Florida Marlins games followed in 1997, and the network acquired regional rights to the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998. Huizenga's ownership initially kept the channel outside the Fox Sports Net affiliation system. After Cablevision and Fox began restructuring their sports-media interests, the network carried CNN/SI programming instead of Fox Sports Net programming. Cablevision bought back Huizenga's interest in November 1999, and the channel relaunched as Fox Sports Net Florida on March 1, 2000. The Fox Sports Net name was later shortened to Fox Sports Florida. News Corporation acquired Cablevision's remaining interests in the network in 2005 as part of a broader asset exchange involving Madison Square Garden and related team holdings. Fox Sports Florida was included among the regional networks that 21st Century Fox planned to sell to The Walt Disney Company in 2017. U.S. antitrust authorities required Disney to divest the networks because Disney already owned ESPN. Sinclair Broadcast Group and Entertainment Studios, through Diamond Sports Group, acquired the Fox regional networks in 2019. In 2021, the channel was renamed Bally Sports Florida under a naming-rights arrangement between Sinclair and Bally's Corporation. Diamond Sports Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2023 after missing an interest payment. During the restructuring, the network lost its Florida Panthers agreement when the club and Bally Sports Florida mutually ended their contract in July 2024. The Panthers subsequently announced a broadcast arrangement with Scripps Sports involving over-the-air stations in parts of South Florida. In October 2024, Diamond announced a sponsorship and naming agreement with FanDuel Group. The Bally Sports channels adopted the FanDuel Sports Network identity on October 21, 2024, and the Florida outlet became FanDuel Sports Network Florida. The network's programming model uses territorial distribution rather than a simple division of the state between the Florida regional channels. FanDuel Sports Network Florida is the principal outlet for Orlando Magic regional broadcasts, while FanDuel…
History
FanDuel Sports Network Florida began broadcasting on December 29, 1987, as SportsChannel Florida. Rainbow Media, a Cablevision subsidiary, created the channel as part of the SportsChannel America regional-network system. The original schedule concentrated on Florida college athletics, with selected games from the University of Florida, Florida State University, the University of Miami, the University of South Florida and Jacksonville University. The channel also supplemented local programming with baseball games supplied by other SportsChannel outlets. In 1988, the network entered the professional-sports market by obtaining regional cable rights to Miami Heat games. Those rights moved to Sunshine Network in 1992, but the Heat later returned after the Florida regional networks came under related Fox ownership. A major ownership shift took place in 1996, when Florida Panthers owner Wayne Huizenga purchased a controlling 70 percent stake. Rainbow Media retained the remaining 30 percent. The change brought Panthers telecasts to SportsChannel Florida for the 1996–97 season. In 1997, the network added Florida Marlins games, initially carrying part of the club's schedule before taking the full regional package the following season. In 1998, it also acquired rights to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. SportsChannel Florida did not immediately join the Fox Sports Net system because Huizenga controlled the outlet separately from Cablevision's other sports assets. During the transition, the network carried CNN/SI programming rather than Fox Sports Net programming. Cablevision repurchased Huizenga's share in November 1999, allowing the channel to relaunch as Fox Sports Net Florida on March 1, 2000. It later operated under the shorter Fox Sports Florida name. News Corporation acquired Cablevision's interests in the network in 2005, giving News Corporation sole ownership. The channel was part of the proposed 2017 sale of 21st Century Fox's regional sports networks to Disney. U.S. regulators required Disney to divest those networks because Disney already owned ESPN, and Sinclair Broadcast Group and Entertainment Studios subsequently acquired them through Diamond Sports Group. The transaction closed in August 2019. In 2021, the channel and its sister Florida network were renamed Bally Sports Florida and Bally Sports Sun under a naming-rights partnership with Bally's Corporation. Diamond Sports Group entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2023. The restructuring affected the regional network portfolio and its team-rights agreements. In July 2024, the Florida Panthers and Bally Sports Florida agreed to end their contract early, after which the Panthers moved to a Scripps Sports arrangement using broadcast television outlets in parts of South Florida. In October 2024, Diamond announced a new sponsorship arrangement with FanDuel Group. The Bally Sports channels were renamed FanDuel Sports Network channels on October 21, 2024, creating the current FanDuel Sports Network Florida brand. The network maintains production facilities in Fort Lauderdale with FanDuel Sports Network Sun. Its distribution has included cable providers throughout Florida and portions of southern Alabama and Georgia, as well as nationwide satellite carriage through DirecTV. Its modern programming identity is centered on local professional sports, especially Orlando Magic basketball, supported by studio shows, team analysis, interviews and pregame and postgame coverage. The Florida channels coordinate rights according to team territories rather than dividing every sport strictly by geography. Historically associated rights have included the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays and Florida Panthers, although individual agreements have changed over time.
