Overview
Comau S.p.A. is an Italian multinational industrial automation company headquartered in Turin and operating as part of Stellantis. Its name derives from the original Italian description Consorzio Macchine Utensili, reflecting the consortium of Turin-based industrial companies and engineers that established the business in 1973. The founders and participating companies had experience supporting the construction of the VAZ automobile plant in Togliatti, Soviet Russia, an early project that helped shape Comau’s capabilities in large-scale manufacturing engineering. The company initially concentrated on production equipment, tooling, engineering, and factory systems for the automotive sector. It subsequently expanded through international subsidiaries, acquisitions, and the development of proprietary automation products. In 1979, Comau built an early robotic assembly line for Fiat’s Mirafiori plant, where it was used in production of the Fiat 131. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the company developed industrial robots and introduced Robogate, an automated body-assembly concept that coordinated multiple robots and manufacturing operations. These activities established Comau as a significant supplier of body-in-white, welding, assembly, and powertrain manufacturing systems. Comau’s expansion accelerated during the 1980s and 1990s. It established a North American presence through Comau Productivity Systems, acquired companies involved in sheet-metal dies, injection molds, engineering, body systems, welding equipment, and painting systems, and created subsidiaries across Europe, South America, and Asia. The business broadened its engineering and maintenance capabilities through acquisitions including Geico, Sciaky, Renault Automation, Germann-Intec, and other specialist operations. In 1996, the company adopted the name Comau S.p.A., consolidating the Comau identity across its activities. Although automotive manufacturing remains central to the company, Comau also serves shipping, logistics, food and beverage, packaging, renewable energy, heavy industry, and other manufacturing markets. Its portfolio includes body assembly and welding systems, machining and powertrain equipment, industrial robots, collaborative robots, laser-processing technologies, automated guided vehicles, factory software and digital tools, maintenance, plant design, project management, and systems integration. The company has also developed solutions for electric vehicles and batteries, including rechargeable battery-module assembly, electric-motor manufacturing, battery logistics, and automated battery dismantling. Comau’s newer activities emphasize Industry 4.0, human-machine collaboration, electrification, and workforce education. Products and programs include the Racer-5-0.80 collaborative robot, AURA collaborative robotics technology, MATE-XT upper-limb exoskeletons, Agile automated guided vehicles, Lhyte hybrid laser technology, and the e.DO educational robot platform. The HUMANufacturing Innovation Center in Pontedera and the Comau Academy support research, technical training, management education, and STEM learning. Comau has collaborated with industrial, telecommunications, research, and educational organizations on digital manufacturing, battery industrialization, robotics control, and automated welding. It joined European battery-sector organizations and participated in projects involving the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, Rockwell Automation, Fincantieri, and Ilika. The company has also supported manufacturing programs for Stellantis and other automotive customers, including production-line work for the electric Fiat 500 and the Jeep Commander in Brazil. Public reference material describes Comau as having operations in roughly 13 to 14 countries, with the precise footprint and workforce varying by reporting period. Its leadership has included chairman Alessandro Nasi and chief executive Pietro Gorlier, appointed CEO in 2022.
History
Comau was established in Turin in 1973 as Consorzio Macchine Utensili. The organization brought together engineers and companies associated with the construction of the VAZ automobile plant in Togliatti. In 1977 it was renamed Comau Finanziaria S.p.A. The company’s early business centered on industrial equipment, tooling, engineering, and manufacturing systems, particularly for Fiat and the wider automotive industry. In 1979, Comau supplied an automated robotic assembly line to Fiat’s Mirafiori plant for production of the Fiat 131. Around the same period it began developing industrial robots and the Robogate body-assembly system, which combined multiple robots and automated operations. During the 1980s, Comau created Comau Productivity Systems in North America and expanded its capabilities through interests and acquisitions involving tooling, dies, molds, product engineering, process engineering, and manufacturing equipment. Berto Lamet, U.T.S., TEA, and the Spanish die producer Mecaner became part of this expansion. The company expanded through South America, Europe, North America, and Asia during the 1990s. Comau Brazil and Comau Argentina were established for the Mercosur market, while operations were created in Germany and France. In 1996, the company formally adopted the name Comau S.p.A. Its acquisition of a majority interest in Geico in 1997 added automotive paint-system capabilities. Comau also established operations in India, Poland, and other locations, and launched Comau Service to provide worldwide maintenance support. A major acquisition phase followed in 1999. Comau acquired French body-systems and welding-equipment company Sciaky and gained a majority interest in Renault Automation, which contributed engineering, metal-cutting, assembly, and body-final-assembly expertise. Fiat’s acquisition of Progressive Tool and Industries Company in the United States led to the creation of Comau Pico, while related operations in the United Kingdom and South Africa were brought into the Comau network. In 2000, the company opened an operation in Shanghai and established service and trading entities in Belgium and Spain. Further engineering and international subsidiaries followed in Romania, Australia, Sweden, Russia, and China between 2001 and 2004. Comau consolidated several French and German operations in 2005 and later formed Comau-Germann Intec in Germany for engineering work. From 2013 onward, the company added sites in China, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, the United States, and the United Kingdom. These locations supported regional engineering, production, maintenance, and customer-service activities. The company broadened its portfolio beyond conventional automotive automation. It developed anthropomorphic and SCARA robots, laser robots, collaborative robots, exoskeletons, automated guided vehicles, welding equipment, hybrid laser systems, and digital factory technologies. Its e.DO platform introduced educational robotics and coding activities, while the Comau Academy provided technical, managerial, and master-level training. In 2016, Comau opened the HUMANufacturing Innovation Center in Pontedera, Italy. During the 2020s, Comau increased its emphasis on digital manufacturing, vehicle electrification, and battery production. It collaborated with TIM on industrial digital transformation, supported FCA and Fiat production of the electric Fiat 500, and worked with Italian competence centers and the EIT Manufacturing community. In 2021, it joined the European Battery Alliance and Batteries European Partnership Association and participated in battery and robotics initiatives involving the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, Rockwell Automation, Fincantieri, and Ilika. In 2022, it supported the Jeep Commander production-line expansion in Brazil and continued work related to all-solid-state battery technology. Comau remains a Stellantis industrial-automation business with activities spanning automotive, logistics, shipping, food and beverage, packaging, renewable energy, electrification, and heavy industry.
