Overview
Carnival Luminosa is a large cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line and owned within the Carnival Corporation & plc group. The vessel entered service in 2009 as Costa Luminosa, a ship of Costa Cruises, and was transferred to Carnival Cruise Line in 2022. Its career therefore spans two related but distinct cruise brands within the same corporate group. The ship was developed as part of Costa Cruises' major fleet expansion program during the late 2000s. Its design combines characteristics associated with Carnival Corporation's Spirit and Vista classes, creating a hybrid platform shared with its sister ship, Costa Deliziosa. The vessel was constructed by Fincantieri at Marghera near Venice. Its keel was laid in October 2007, it floated out in June 2008, completed sea trials in March 2009, and was delivered to Costa Cruises on 1 May 2009. The ship was christened in Genoa on 5 June 2009 alongside Costa Pacifica, in a dual ceremony that was recognized at the time by Guinness World Records as the largest number of ships inaugurated in one day by a single company. Costa Luminosa began commercial operations in May 2009 with Mediterranean voyages departing from Venice. Its early itineraries included ports in Turkey, Greece, Italy and the eastern Mediterranean, followed by longer northern European programs visiting Baltic capitals, the Norwegian fjords and the North Cape. During the 2009–2010 winter season, the ship operated in the Persian Gulf from Dubai. A planned call at Bahrain was later removed from itineraries amid political unrest in the region. The ship has a gross tonnage of approximately 92,700 and is about 292 metres long. Its passenger facilities include approximately 1,130 cabins, multiple dining venues, a theatre, a cinema and other leisure amenities. As Costa Luminosa, it was marketed primarily for mainstream international leisure cruising, with seasonal programs in Europe, the Caribbean and the Persian Gulf. From 2017, its recurring summer program focused on seven-night Greek Islands cruises, while winter schedules generally included seven-night Caribbean voyages. The vessel became associated with two significant episodes in its earlier career. In 2015, Swedish public broadcaster Sveriges Television reported allegations that wastewater from the ship had been discharged into the Baltic Sea rather than being delivered to port facilities. The report estimated a large volume of discharge during one cruise but did not establish that MARPOL 73/78 rules had been breached. In March 2020, the ship was also involved in a widely reported COVID-19 outbreak during the early pandemic. Passengers with symptoms disembarked in Puerto Rico, infections were subsequently confirmed, and further cases were reported after the ship called at Marseille and Savona. A civil lawsuit was filed in the United States in April 2020 alleging that Costa Cruises mishandled the outbreak and permitted symptomatic passengers to sail; the existence of the filing does not by itself establish liability. On 14 June 2022, Carnival Corporation announced that Costa Luminosa would be transferred to Carnival Cruise Line. The handover took place on 8 September 2022, after which the vessel was renamed Carnival Luminosa and underwent preparation for its new operator. It repositioned to Brisbane and began Carnival-branded voyages in November 2022. In its Carnival service, the ship has operated seasonal itineraries in Australia during southern-hemisphere summers, alongside other Carnival deployment patterns. The ship's brand identity is consequently tied to Carnival Cruise Line's mainstream cruise proposition rather than to a stand-alone consumer-goods brand.
History
Carnival Luminosa was conceived as Costa Luminosa during Costa Cruises' five-ship fleet expansion program. The group ordered the vessel and its sister ship, Costa Deliziosa, from Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard on 12 June 2006. Construction began with keel laying on 10 October 2007. The ship left drydock on 30 June 2008 and completed sea trials on 30 March 2009. Costa Cruises accepted delivery on 1 May 2009. The vessel introduced a hybrid design that combined features associated with Spirit-class and Vista-class cruise ships. It and Costa Deliziosa formed a related design pair rather than a conventional class of identical ships. At approximately 92,700 gross tons and 292 metres in length, the ship was designed for mainstream international cruising. Its accommodation and public-area plan included around 1,130 cabins, four dining areas, a theatre, a cinema and additional leisure facilities. Costa Luminosa was christened in Genoa on 5 June 2009 together with Costa Pacifica. The joint ceremony was notable because it represented the simultaneous inauguration of two Costa ships in Italy and received a Guinness World Records distinction. Commercial service began with a 10-day eastern Mediterranean voyage from Venice on 5 May 2009. Early routes included Istanbul, Bari, Olympia, Rhodes, Smyrna, Mykonos and Athens. Later in 2009 the ship expanded into longer cruises to Baltic capitals, the Norwegian fjords and the North Cape. For winter 2009–2010, the ship moved to the Persian Gulf and offered seven-night itineraries from Dubai with calls including Muscat, Fujairah, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. The Bahrain stop was subsequently removed following political developments. In later years, the vessel developed a seasonal pattern centered on European and Caribbean cruising. From 2017, summers were devoted to seven-night Greek Islands programs, while winters generally included seven-night Caribbean cruises. The ship's earlier Costa career also included environmental and public-health controversies. In 2015, Sveriges Television reported that toilet wastewater from Costa Luminosa had been discharged into the Baltic Sea rather than handled through port facilities. The report estimated the volume involved during one cruise but did not claim that the discharge necessarily violated the MARPOL 73/78 framework. In early 2020, the vessel became involved in the COVID-19 pandemic's cruise-ship crisis. A passenger transferred to a Cayman Islands hospital in late February was later identified as having the first confirmed COVID-19 case in the Cayman Islands and subsequently died. During a March transatlantic voyage, two symptomatic passengers disembarked in Puerto Rico; infections were later confirmed, and one of those individuals died. Additional sick passengers were left in Tenerife, while other passengers were quarantined onboard. The ship later called at Marseille, where sick passengers disembarked, and Savona, where the remaining passengers left the vessel on 23 March. French authorities subsequently reported COVID-19 infections linked to the ship. A lawsuit filed in Miami in April 2020 alleged that Costa Cruises had mishandled the situation and permitted symptomatic passengers to sail. Costa Luminosa completed its final season under the Costa brand with Greek Islands cruises. On 14 June 2022, Carnival Corporation announced its transfer to Carnival Cruise Line. The formal handover occurred on 8 September 2022. After preparation and a refit, the ship sailed to Brisbane and began Carnival operations on 6 November 2022. It subsequently operated Australian summer seasons in 2023 and 2024, becoming part of Carnival Cruise Line's international fleet under its current name.
