Overview
Zynga is an American video game developer and publisher focused primarily on mobile and social-network gaming. Founded in April 2007 by Mark Pincus and an initial team that included Eric Schiermeyer, Justin Waldron, Michael Luxton, Steve Schoettler, and Andrew Trader, the company first operated as Presidio Media before adopting the Zynga name in July 2007. The name refers to Pincus’s American bulldog, which also inspired the company’s bulldog logo. Zynga’s early growth was closely tied to Facebook’s social platform. Its first title, Texas Hold ’Em Poker, later known as Zynga Poker, launched on Facebook in July 2007. The company developed a free-to-play model in which games were distributed without an upfront price and monetized through virtual goods, advertising, partner offers, and direct purchases. This model made Zynga one of the most visible early social-game companies and helped establish the commercial importance of games embedded in social networks. The company’s defining breakthrough came with FarmVille. After acquiring MyMiniLife in 2009, Zynga used the studio’s technology to launch FarmVille on Facebook in June of that year. The game rapidly became a major social-media phenomenon, reaching approximately ten million daily active users within six weeks and later exceeding 80 million players at its early peak. CityVille, Zynga Poker, Words With Friends, and other titles expanded the company’s portfolio, while acquisitions such as OMGPOP, creator of Draw Something, and studios associated with CSR Racing strengthened its mobile capabilities. Zynga’s rapid expansion brought both financial and organizational pressure. The company became Facebook’s largest application developer by monthly active users in 2009, raised substantial venture capital, and went public on NASDAQ in December 2011 under the ticker ZNGA. At the same time, dependence on Facebook’s distribution rules, changing user behavior, declining engagement in some legacy games, and criticism of certain advertising and monetization practices created strategic challenges. A major restructuring in 2013 included approximately 520 layoffs and the closure of several offices. Further reductions followed in 2014. During the mid-2010s, Zynga shifted emphasis from Facebook-based games toward mobile products and more durable franchises. Leadership changed several times: Don Mattrick became chief executive in 2013, Mark Pincus returned briefly in 2015, and Frank Gibeau became CEO in 2016. Games such as Words With Friends 2, CSR Racing 2, Zynga Poker, and later Empires & Puzzles and Merge Dragons! helped rebuild the business. The company also used acquisitions to obtain established mobile development teams and intellectual property. Take-Two Interactive announced an agreement to acquire Zynga in January 2022 in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at approximately $12.7 billion. The transaction received shareholder approval in May and closed on May 23, 2022. Zynga therefore ceased to be an independent public company, but continues as a major game business within Take-Two’s portfolio. Its operations span mobile games, casual games, social experiences, live services, advertising, and in-game purchases. Zynga has also conducted charitable work through Zynga.org, which incorporated fundraising into games and supported humanitarian and philanthropic initiatives.
History
Zynga was established in April 2007 by Mark Pincus and several founding collaborators. Originally called Presidio Media, it changed its name to Zynga in July 2007. Its first game, Texas Hold ’Em Poker, was released on Facebook that same year. The company’s early strategy depended on the viral distribution of social-network applications and on a free-to-play economy supported by virtual currency and digital goods. The business expanded quickly as Facebook gaming grew. Zynga became Facebook’s largest application developer by monthly active users in April 2009. It opened Zynga East in Baltimore and acquired MyMiniLife in June 2009. MyMiniLife’s technology supported FarmVille, which launched on Facebook in June 2009 and became one of the platform’s largest games. FarmVille.com followed in November as Zynga’s first standalone web destination. By early 2010, FarmVille had attracted tens of millions of players, while the company negotiated a five-year commercial relationship with Facebook involving Facebook Credits. CityVille became Zynga’s most popular game in late 2010, surpassing FarmVille in monthly and daily active users. The company continued to acquire development teams and announced the Zynga With Friends network, Zynga API, third-party publishing initiatives, and a mobile-partner program in 2012. It also partnered with Hasbro to create physical products based on Zynga properties, including FarmVille, CityVille, Words With Friends, and Draw Something. Zynga filed for an initial public offering in July 2011 and began trading on NASDAQ in December. Its public-company period was marked by strong visibility but also concerns about reliance on Facebook, concentration of revenue among a small number of players and games, and the difficulty of replacing aging viral hits. The company explored real-money gaming outside the United States through a partnership with bwin.party, but later abandoned plans to pursue real-money gaming in the United States. The company entered a difficult restructuring period in 2013 and 2014. It announced large layoffs, closed offices, and faced declining user numbers. Don Mattrick became CEO in 2013, succeeding Pincus, who remained involved as chairman and chief product officer. Pincus returned as CEO in 2015 before Frank Gibeau assumed the role in 2016. Under the later strategy, Zynga prioritized mobile development, live operations, user retention, paid acquisition, advertising, and acquisitions of studios with proven franchises. Mobile titles including Words With Friends 2, CSR Racing 2, Zynga Poker, Empires & Puzzles, and Merge Dragons! supported a recovery. The company reported stronger performance in the fourth quarter of 2017, while its monthly audience reached approximately 80 million around that period. Zynga also operated Zynga.org, a nonprofit initiative that integrated charitable giving into its games and reported raising funds for humanitarian relief and other causes. In January 2022, Take-Two Interactive announced its intention to purchase Zynga for approximately $12.7 billion. Shareholders approved the transaction in May, and the acquisition closed on May 23, 2022. Zynga is now operated within Take-Two’s broader portfolio, while its brand, studios, franchises, and mobile publishing activities remain active.
