Overview

Warner Music Philippines (WMP) is the Philippine operating company and record-label affiliate of Warner Music Group, one of the major international music companies. Its activities include signing and developing Filipino artists, releasing and marketing recorded music, distributing music through physical and digital channels, and working with local labels, music organizations, telecommunications companies, and international Filipino creators. The company operates within the Philippine music industry while also using Warner Music Group’s international infrastructure to bring Filipino recordings to audiences outside the country. The business traces its origins to 1977, when WEA International, the Warner-affiliated international operation then associated with the Warner music business, established WEA Records Philippines through a 15-year distribution and licensing arrangement with a local group led by Bella Dy Tan. This early structure gave Warner a presence in the Philippine market while local partners handled much of the practical distribution activity. In 1992, Warner Music formally established its own local branch. The move followed the distributor’s development into an independent company that became Universal Records. WMP initially operated from the Ma. Daniel Building in Malate, Manila. During the 1990s and 2000s, WMP built a broad Filipino roster spanning pop, rock, adult contemporary, alternative music, and other mainstream genres. Artists associated with the label during this period included Lea Salonga, Side A, Alamid, Barbie’s Cradle, David Pomeranz, Nina, Kitchie Nadal, Christian Bautista, Sitti, and Kamikazee. The label also worked with established performers such as Zsa Zsa Padilla, Pops Fernandez, Rivermaya, Rico Blanco, Moonstar88, and other Philippine acts. Its office moved in 2003 from Malate to Wynsum Corporate Plaza in Ortigas Center and subsequently to UnionBank Plaza in the same district. The company’s operating model changed substantially during the 2010s. Widespread piracy and the decline of traditional recorded-music revenues affected the Philippine market, reducing the commercial importance of physical releases. WMP responded by moving much of its release activity toward digital formats and global streaming services such as Spotify. It also launched the digital music site PressPlay.ph and later relocated its offices to EcoTower in Bonifacio Global City. The transition made the label less dependent on physical retail and aligned its Philippine operations with Warner Music Group’s global digital-distribution capabilities. WMP continued to sign and develop newer artists in the late 2010s and 2020s. Its 2019 signings included Quest, Leanne & Naara, Keiko Necesario, and St. Wolf. The company expanded its local-label relationships in 2020 through a partnership with Cagayan de Oro-based 9K Records, which represents artists from the southern Philippines. It also partnered with the PhilPop Fest Foundation and Smart Communications for the 2020 edition of the PhilPop songwriting competition. In 2021, Warner Music Group appointed Sarah Ismail as WMP’s managing director, while WMP formed a sublabel relationship with Sora Music Group, the electronic-music label founded by DJ and producer Jenil. In October 2021, WMP introduced Global Pinoy Music, or GLOPM, as an initiative designed to connect Filipino music with international-based Filipino artists and producers and to expand the global reach of original Pilipino music. The initiative reflects a broader strategy of combining local artist development with cross-border collaboration and digital distribution. In 2023, WMP marked three decades since the establishment of its formal local branch in 1992 with the compilation project 30 Years with Warner Music Philippines. The project reimagined songs associated with the label and included newer OPM performers such as Jason Dhakal, Sugarcane, Lola Amour, Felip, and Jikamarie. The recordings were made available through S…

History

Warner Music Philippines began in 1977, when WEA International established WEA Records Philippines through a 15-year distribution and licensing agreement with a local group led by Bella Dy Tan. The arrangement provided Warner’s international music business with a Philippine market presence through a local distribution structure. In 1992, Warner Music established its own Philippine branch after its distributor became independent and developed into Universal Records. The new branch initially operated from the Ma. Daniel Building in Malate, Manila. The formal local operation developed a roster of Filipino and international artists during the 1990s and 2000s. Among the artists associated with WMP were Lea Salonga, Side A, Alamid, Barbie’s Cradle, David Pomeranz, Nina, Kitchie Nadal, Christian Bautista, Sitti, and Kamikazee. Other former or associated acts included Zsa Zsa Padilla, Pops Fernandez, Rivermaya, Rico Blanco, Moonstar88, Gracenote, Hale, IV of Spades, and Ben&Ben. The roster covered mainstream pop, rock, alternative music, adult contemporary, and other commercially important segments of the Philippine recording market. In 2003, WMP moved its offices to Wynsum Corporate Plaza in Ortigas Center and later operated from UnionBank Plaza in the same business district. During the 2010s, piracy and the contraction of physical recorded-music sales put pressure on the company’s revenues and traditional release model. WMP responded by shifting its catalog and new releases toward digital-only distribution through global services including Spotify. It also launched PressPlay.ph, a digital music site, and moved its offices to EcoTower in Bonifacio Global City. The label continued to broaden its artist and partnership portfolio after the shift to digital operations. In 2019, it signed Quest, Leanne & Naara, Keiko Necesario, and St. Wolf. In 2020, it partnered with 9K Records, a Cagayan de Oro-based label connected with artists from the southern Philippines. That year it also joined the PhilPop Fest Foundation and Smart Communications in hosting the 2020 PhilPop competition. In 2021, Sarah Ismail became managing director, and WMP established a sublabel agreement with Sora Music Group, an electronic-music label founded by Jenil. In October 2021, WMP launched Global Pinoy Music, a program intended to connect OPM performers with Filipino artists and producers working internationally. The initiative used cross-border collaboration and digital distribution to support the wider circulation of Filipino music. In 2023, WMP celebrated 30 years since the formation of its formal local branch. Its anniversary project, 30 Years with Warner Music Philippines, brought together past catalog material and newer OPM artists, including Jason Dhakal, Sugarcane, Lola Amour, Felip, and Jikamarie, in reimagined recordings distributed through digital stores and streaming services. The company’s historical development illustrates the movement of the Philippine major-label business from licensed and physical distribution toward digital releases, local-label partnerships, artist development, and international audience-building.
