Overview

Oaktree Capital Management is a global alternative investment manager headquartered in Los Angeles. The firm was established in 1995 by a group of investment professionals who had worked together at TCW Group during the 1980s and early 1990s. From its beginning, Oaktree concentrated on credit-oriented and value-based strategies, particularly distressed debt, high-yield bonds, convertible securities, emerging-markets debt, and other situations in which disciplined underwriting could identify mispriced risk. The firm's early growth came partly from the migration of institutional clients from the founders' former platform. Within its first few months, more than 30 former TCW clients reportedly transferred approximately $1.5 billion in assets to the new firm. Oaktree then expanded through a series of internally developed strategies, sometimes described by the firm as step-out strategies. These included emerging-markets absolute-return investing, European high-yield bonds, power opportunities, mezzanine finance, principal investments in Asia and Europe, senior loans, global high yield, emerging-markets equities, and real-estate debt. Oaktree's core business is organized around credit, equity, and real estate. Credit activities include distressed debt, performing credit, private credit, direct lending, high-yield bonds, senior loans, structured credit, emerging-markets debt, and special situations. Equity activities include private equity, control and non-control investments, emerging-markets equities, and opportunities funds. Real-estate activities include real-estate debt and equity strategies. The firm also manages customized mandates and sub-advisory products distributed through financial institutions. Oaktree has historically served pension plans, sovereign wealth funds, university endowments, foundations, insurance companies, corporations, family offices, and other institutional and wealth-management clients. Its reputation rests on a value-oriented investment philosophy emphasizing downside protection, risk control, patient capital, and rigorous analysis of credit quality and capital structure. The firm became particularly associated with large distressed-debt funds that sought opportunities during periods of financial stress, including the global financial crisis and the European sovereign-debt crisis. Oaktree became a publicly traded partnership on the New York Stock Exchange in 2012 under the ticker OAK. Brookfield Asset Management announced an agreement in 2019 to acquire a majority interest, and the transaction was completed later that year. Oaktree continued to operate with its own investment identity and leadership while becoming part of Brookfield's broader alternative-asset-management platform. Later activity expanded the firm's private-credit capabilities, including its majority investment in 17Capital and the launch of Oaktree Lending Partners. The brand's investment scope has also included corporate takeovers, rescue financing, real estate, infrastructure-related businesses, media, telecommunications, consumer companies, sports assets, and other special situations. Its portfolio has included investments such as Tribune Company, Nine Entertainment, MediaWorks New Zealand, Fitness First, Quiksilver, Billabong, Inter Milan, and Caen football club, although many individual holdings were subsequently sold or changed. Oaktree remains an active global investment manager. Reference material describes continued fundraising for large opportunities and private-credit vehicles, partnerships to finance acquisitions, expansion into media ownership, and further integration with Brookfield. Assets under management figures vary by reporting date and should be interpreted in relation to the relevant period; the cited Wikipedia material reports $223 billion as of December 31, 2025.

History

Oaktree was founded in 1995 by investment professionals who had previously worked together at TCW Group. The founding group included Howard Marks, Bruce Karsh, Richard Masson, Sheldon Stone, Larry Keele, and Stephen Kaplan. Their shared background shaped Oaktree's early specialization in credit, distressed securities, and value-oriented investing. More than 30 former TCW clients reportedly moved approximately $1.5 billion to Oaktree within the firm's first three months. During the second half of the 1990s, Oaktree developed a series of new strategies and institutional relationships. In 1996, it became sub-adviser to Vanguard Convertible Securities Fund. It added emerging-markets absolute-return investing in 1997, followed by European high-yield bonds and power-opportunities investing in 1999. The firm continued this strategy-expansion model in the 2000s, entering mezzanine finance in 2001 and adding Asian and European principal investments, European senior loans, U.S. senior loans, value opportunities, global high yield, emerging-markets equities, and real-estate debt. Oaktree's distressed-debt platform became central to its identity. The firm raised an $11 billion distressed-debt fund in 2008, during the global financial crisis. In 2009, the U.S. Treasury selected Oaktree as one of the managers for the Public-Private Investment Program, which was created to support purchases of troubled financial assets. The program raised Oaktree's public profile as a specialist in complex and impaired credit. The firm also acquired a 20% stake in DoubleLine Capital in 2009, expanding its relationships within fixed-income asset management. The company broadened its distribution and sub-advisory relationships during the early 2010s. It was selected for mandates associated with Vanguard, Russell, Credit Suisse, and other investment platforms. In 2011, it established the European Principal Fund III with approximately €3 billion in committed capital, targeting opportunities associated with the European sovereign-debt crisis. Oaktree moved from an over-the-counter trading venue to the New York Stock Exchange in 2012, listing as Oaktree Capital Group under the ticker OAK. The firm also pursued corporate and real-asset investments. Its historical holdings and transactions included businesses in food, fashion, health clubs, media, telecommunications, aviation, sports, entertainment, and industrial manufacturing. Examples included Tribune Company, Nine Entertainment, MediaWorks New Zealand, Fitness First, Quiksilver, Billabong, Inter Milan, Caen football club, and Zzoomm. These investments reflected Oaktree's broader special-situations approach rather than a single-industry operating model. In 2019, Brookfield Asset Management announced that it would purchase a 62% stake in Oaktree for about $4.7 billion. The transaction closed on September 30, 2019. Oaktree retained its own brand, investment process, and leadership structure while becoming part of Brookfield's alternatives platform. In the 2020s, the business emphasized private credit and adjacent financing strategies. It acquired a majority stake in 17Capital in 2022, launched Oaktree Lending Partners in 2023, and appointed Robert O'Leary and Armen Panossian as incoming co-CEOs in the same year. More recent developments have included partnerships for acquisition finance, expansion into media ownership through FilmRise and Shout! Studios, and a reported 2025 agreement for Brookfield to acquire the remaining interest in Oaktree. The cited reference material reports that Oaktree managed $223 billion as of December 31, 2025. Because assets under management, ownership, and leadership can change, those figures and relationships should be read as date-specific rather than timeless attributes.
