Overview

Jasper Park Lodge is a historic resort hotel in Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Commonly known today as Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, the property occupies approximately 700 acres beside Lac Beauvert and is arranged as a low-rise village of cabins, bungalows and lodge buildings rather than as a single monumental hotel. Its setting, architecture and association with Canada’s railway tourism tradition have made it one of the country’s best-known wilderness resorts. The lodge emerged from the development of tourism infrastructure connected with the Canadian National Railway. Before the present resort was built, accommodation at Lac Beauvert included Tent City, a seasonal camp established in 1915 and revived after the First World War by outfitters Fred and Jack Brewster. Canadian National Railways acquired the camp in 1921 and began replacing it with a more substantial resort. The first bungalow opened in 1922, while the principal Central Lodge and additional cabins were developed during the following years. Chief Canadian National architect John Schofield and architect Godfrey Milnes pursued a design intended to fit the landscape. Buildings used peeled logs, fieldstone and cedar, and were dispersed around the lake and surrounding valley. By the middle of the 1920s, the resort had more than 50 log structures and could accommodate hundreds of guests. Expansion in the late 1920s and early 1930s added larger and more luxurious cabins, including the Point, Outlook and Viewpoint cabins. The property later became associated with royal visitors, film production and celebrity guests, including King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during their 1939 Canadian tour and actor Bing Crosby, who returned repeatedly for golf. The lodge’s business has traditionally combined accommodation with destination recreation. Major offerings include guest rooms and suites, standalone cabins, restaurants and lounges, meeting and event facilities, a spa, and access to outdoor activities in the national park. Its golf operation is particularly important to the property’s identity. Designed by Stanley Thompson after an earlier nine-hole project, the Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club opened as an 18-hole course in 1925 and remains a signature attraction. World War II interrupted the resort’s normal operation. Jasper Park Lodge closed to the public from 1942 until 1946 and was used during the war period for military purposes, including winter training by the Scottish Lovat Scouts. Many original bungalows were subsequently replaced or modernized. A major fire destroyed the Central Lodge in July 1952, killing one employee who helped evacuate guests. A new fire-resistant central building was completed in June 1953, retaining a rustic architectural relationship with the surrounding cabins. Ownership and operating arrangements changed in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Canadian Pacific Hotels acquired the property in 1988 and pursued its development as a year-round resort. A five-year restoration and development program completed in 1994 upgraded the guest rooms and public areas. Canadian Pacific Hotels was reorganized into Fairmont Hotels and Resorts in 2001. Oxford Properties acquired the property in 2006, while Fairmont continued to operate it. Accor’s 2015 acquisition of FRHI Hotels & Resorts brought Fairmont, including Jasper Park Lodge, into Accor’s global hospitality portfolio. The property has continued to invest in amenities, including a Fairmont spa added in 2010 and a comprehensive guest-room renovation completed in 2015–16. In 2024, the Jasper wildfire destroyed or damaged several structures in the resort area, although the main lodge was spared. Jasper Park Lodge remains an active destination resort whose appeal depends on the combination of historic Canadian railway heritage, nature-based tourism, golf, dining, events and the protected landscape of Jasper National Park.

History

Jasper Park Lodge developed from the Canadian railway companies’ effort to turn the Rocky Mountain parks into nationally and internationally recognized tourism destinations. In the early twentieth century, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway explored hotel sites in the Jasper region, but financial problems, administrative delays and the First World War prevented those proposals from being realized. Seasonal accommodation at Lac Beauvert nevertheless appeared in 1915, when Edmonton entrepreneur Robert Kenneth and outfitters Fred and Jack Brewster established Tent City. The camp briefly operated with sleeping tents, a kitchen and dining facilities before closing during the war. The Brewsters reopened it in 1919 and expanded it with permanent log buildings in 1920. Canadian National Railways acquired Tent City in 1921 after the nationalization of the Grand Trunk Pacific system. The railway began developing a permanent resort, and the first bungalow opened in June 1922 under the Jasper Park Lodge name. John Schofield, Canadian National’s chief architect, sought a deliberately informal plan that would preserve the appearance of the valley. Rather than constructing a single urban-style grand hotel, the project spread log cabins and smaller buildings through the landscape. Architect Godfrey Milnes designed the Central Lodge and other structures, using local logs and fieldstone together with materials transported by rail. Construction accelerated during the 1920s. The Central Lodge was expanded in 1927 and 1928, while additional cabins increased capacity to more than 500 guests by the early 1930s. The property became a flagship of Canadian National’s western tourist network and benefited from improved road connections, especially the completion of the Icefields Parkway in 1940. The resort’s guest profile included affluent holidaymakers, public figures, filmmakers and members of the British royal family. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stayed in the Outlook Cabin during their 1939 Canadian tour. The Second World War brought a temporary closure from late 1942 until spring 1946. During the closure, the site served military purposes, including winter training by the Scottish Lovat Scouts. After the war, the resort modernized progressively, replacing many early bungalows between the late 1940s and the 1960s while retaining the dispersed rustic character that distinguished it from conventional city hotels. On July 15, 1952, the original Central Lodge burned. The fire spread rapidly after being discovered in the evening, and telephone lines were lost before outside assistance could be summoned. Guests were evacuated, and staff, local firefighters, police, military personnel and workers from nearby infrastructure projects helped prevent the fire from reaching more cabins. The replacement Central Lodge used steel, concrete, fieldstone and cedar in a fire-resistant design and opened on June 9, 1953. Golf became another central element of the resort’s history. The Dominion Parks Branch began a nine-hole project in 1922, but Canadian National took over and commissioned Stanley Thompson to create an 18-hole course. The Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club opened on July 17, 1925. Its construction required extensive clearing, imported topsoil and a water-storage system. The course was modified for championship preparation in the late 1920s, received a clubhouse and golfer accommodation in 1930, and later underwent further changes, including additional holes in 1950 and a new clubhouse in 1968. Canadian Pacific Hotels acquired Jasper Park Lodge in 1988 and committed to making it a year-round resort. A major restoration and development program concluded in 1994. The property became part of Fairmont Hotels and Resorts after the 2001 reorganization of Canadian Pacific Hotels. Oxford Properties purchased it in 2006, with Fairmont continuing as operator. Accor’s acquisition of FRHI Hotels & Resorts in 2015 placed Fairmont within Accor’s international group. More recent investments included a spa completed in 2010 and a broad room renovation in 2015–16. The 2024 Jasper wildfire damaged or destroyed several resort structures but did not destroy the main lodge. The property’s current identity remains rooted in accommodation, dining, golf, conferences and outdoor tourism within Jasper National Park.
