Overview

Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten is a historic luxury hotel on Neuer Jungfernstieg beside Hamburg’s Inner Alster. Its origins date to 24 February 1897, when hotelier Friedrich Haerlin bought a small building containing 11 rooms and three bathrooms at auction and developed it into a grand hotel. Expansion in 1905 increased the property to 57 rooms, while a further enlargement in 1911 brought the total to 140 bedrooms and 50 bathrooms. The hotel’s architecture and identity were subsequently shaped by the consolidation of several structures, the addition of a distinctive green copper roof, and the creation of restaurants and public rooms associated with different historical styles. The property experienced major disruption during the First World War and the German Revolution. In 1915 it was commandeered by the High Command of Coastal Defence, while during the revolutionary period of 1918–1919 it was occupied by the Supreme Marine Council. Mutinous sailors also shelled the building from the nearby Alsterpavillon. The hotel was looted and damaged, requiring a substantial postwar renovation. It resumed commercial development with the opening of the Haerlin Restaurant in 1919 and the Art Deco Jahreszeiten Grill in 1925. Further upgrades followed in 1928, including improvements to guest rooms and the construction of a fifth-floor balcony. Under Fritz Haerlin, who took over from his father in 1932, the hotel expanded its hospitality offer with restaurants, bars and cafés. Café Condi adopted a Biedermeier-inspired design, while Jahreszeiten Keller later became known as Doc Cheng’s. The hotel suffered comparatively limited damage during the Second World War, but after the conflict it served as the headquarters of the British 7th Armoured Division until 1952. Its formal reopening took place on 4 April 1952. The hotel joined The Leading Hotels of the World in 1966. Ownership changed several times from the late twentieth century onward. The Haerlin heirs sold the property to Japan’s Aoki Corporation in 1989, after which it was placed in Aoki’s Westin Hotels division in 1991. Aoki sold it to Raffles International in 1997, and the property temporarily adopted the name Raffles Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Following the 2006 merger of Raffles Hotels and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts into Fairmont Raffles Hotels International, the hotel became Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in 2007. A renovation programme carried out from 2007 to 2010 was reported to have cost approximately €25 million. In February 2013, the family-owned Dohle retail group acquired the property, while Fairmont retained management responsibilities. Dohle subsequently renovated the 156 guest rooms, restaurants and spa facilities. The hotel’s current positioning combines historic architecture, premium accommodation, destination dining, wellness and event hosting. Restaurant Haerlin is its best-known culinary outlet; under chef Christoph Rüffer, it has held two Michelin stars since 2010 according to the supplied reference material. The hotel is also presented as a recipient of numerous national and international hospitality awards.

History

Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten began in 1897 when Friedrich Haerlin acquired a small 11-room building on Hamburg’s Inner Alster. He developed it into a luxury hotel, with expansions in 1905 and 1911 increasing the room count to 57 and then 140 bedrooms. The property’s separate structures were later unified architecturally, notably through the addition of its green copper roof. In 1919, the hotel opened the Haerlin Restaurant, followed by the Art Deco Jahreszeiten Grill in 1925. Guest rooms were upgraded in 1928, when a fifth-floor balcony was also added. Fritz Haerlin assumed control in 1932 and expanded the hotel’s restaurant and bar portfolio. His period included the Biedermeier-style Café Condi and the Jahreszeiten Keller, later known as Doc Cheng’s. The First World War and the German Revolution severely interrupted operations. The hotel was commandeered in 1915, and revolutionary forces occupied it from November 1918 to March 1919 after nearby shelling and unrest. Looting and damage led to a complete renovation. The hotel sustained relatively limited damage during the Second World War. It was subsequently used by the British 7th Armoured Division as its headquarters until 1952, then reopened on 4 April of that year. Membership in The Leading Hotels of the World began in 1966. Gert Pranter became hotel director in 1973. Ownership changed in 1989 when the Haerlin heirs sold the property to Aoki Corporation. Aoki transferred it to the Westin Hotels division in 1991. Raffles International acquired it on 31 July 1997, leading to the temporary name Raffles Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Ingo C. Peters became director in October 1997. After the 2006 corporate combination of Raffles and Fairmont, the property was renamed Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten on 30 April 2007. The hotel underwent a renovation programme from 2007 to 2010. In February 2013, Dohle Unternehmensgruppe acquired the property, while Fairmont remained the operating manager. Dohle later renovated the 156 guestrooms, restaurants and spa facilities. The hotel continues to operate as a luxury heritage property with accommodation, fine dining, wellness, private events and business hospitality. Restaurant Haerlin is its principal gastronomic flagship and has been associated with two Michelin stars since 2010 under Christoph Rüffer, based on the supplied reference.
