Overview
Fairmont Le Montreux Palace is a landmark luxury hotel on Avenue Claude Nobs in Montreux, on the Swiss shore of Lake Geneva. Opened on 19 March 1906, the hotel was designed by Swiss architect Eugène Jost and built in approximately 18 months. Its architecture combined the grand public spaces associated with Belle Époque resort hotels with the modern conveniences of its era, including heating, electric lighting and private bathrooms supplied with hot and cold running water. The property incorporated the earlier Hotel du Cygne, helping create a large resort complex with a grand hall, music salon and richly decorated ballrooms. The hotel's origins are tied to the development of Montreux as an international resort. Tourism expanded rapidly in the region during the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1881, Montreux entrepreneurs Alexandre Emery and Ami Chessex acquired the Hotel du Cygne, originally built in 1837, and in 1895 established the company Le Montreux Palace & Cygne. The opening of the Palace in 1906 represented the next major stage in that enterprise and positioned Montreux as a destination for aristocratic, diplomatic and affluent international travelers. During its early decades, the hotel marketed not only accommodation but also a complete resort experience. Guests could use entertainment rooms, ballrooms and a theater, while a sports pavilion added daytime activities. The pavilion, constructed in 1911, included a tea room, skating rink and shooting range; tennis was also played on the grounds. The hotel's lake and Alpine setting, formal architecture and event facilities made it suitable for both seasonal tourism and prestigious gatherings. The property was temporarily converted for humanitarian use during both World Wars. In the First World War it sheltered wounded French and British Allied soldiers as a hospital. Tourism recovered during the 1920s, when Montreux again attracted wealthy visitors and public figures. The hotel participated in the foundation of the Luxury Hotels of Europe and Egypt association in 1928. In 1936 it became the venue for the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits, an international treaty involving Greece, Turkey, the United Kingdom, France and Russia. The agreement was signed in the hotel's Salle des Fêtes on 20 July 1936, and a plaque commemorates the event. The hotel also has a strong cultural association. Composer Richard Strauss composed his Four Last Songs while in exile at the Palace. Vladimir Nabokov and Vera Nabokov lived there for the final seventeen years of Vladimir Nabokov's life, and Vera remained at the hotel after his death. The property has welcomed performers connected with the Montreux Jazz Festival since the festival began in 1966. Its interiors have appeared in film and television work, including Peter Ustinov's Lady L, a BBC production and Luc Besson's Kiss of the Dragon. Today, the hotel operates as part of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, which has belonged to Accor since 2016. It combines historic architecture with contemporary guest facilities, including 236 rooms and suites, restaurants and bars, meeting and ballroom space, and a 2,000-square-metre spa. Dining venues include La Palmeraie, the Montreux Jazz Café, Lounge Bar, MP'S Bar & Grill, La Terrasse, Funky Claude's Bar and Pureaty Café. The property remains oriented toward luxury leisure travel, cultural tourism, conferences, weddings and other high-end events. It is a member of Swiss Deluxe Hotels and Historic Hotels Worldwide and is protected as a Swiss cultural property of national importance.
History
Fairmont Le Montreux Palace developed within the rise of Montreux as an international resort on Lake Geneva. Tourism in the area expanded from the 1850s onward, supported by the landscape, climate and growing transport links that brought European and overseas visitors to the Swiss Riviera. In 1881, Alexandre Emery and Ami Chessex acquired the Hotel du Cygne, a property dating from 1837. Fourteen years later they founded Le Montreux Palace & Cygne, creating the corporate and property-development foundation for a larger grand hotel. Swiss architect Eugène Jost designed the Palace. Construction took approximately 18 months, and the new hotel opened on 19 March 1906. It was connected to the former Hotel du Cygne and offered the scale and ornament expected of a major Belle Époque hotel. Its Grand Hall, Salon de Musique and ballrooms supported concerts, dances, receptions and other social events. At the same time, heating, electricity and private bathrooms with hot and cold running water presented the hotel as a technologically modern destination. The Palace attracted European aristocrats, Russian princes, New York bankers, maharajahs and other international travelers. The property expanded its resort programming in 1911 with the construction of a sports pavilion known as The Pavillon. It included a tea room, skating rink and shooting range, while tennis tournaments took place on the hotel grounds. These facilities reflected the period's emerging model of luxury hospitality, in which a hotel was expected to provide entertainment, sport, social life and dining as well as rooms. The First World War interrupted the hotel's tourism business. The Palace was used as a hospital for wounded French and British Allied soldiers. During the 1920s, international leisure travel returned and Montreux recovered much of its prewar prestige. In 1928, the hotel participated in the establishment of the Luxury Hotels of Europe and Egypt association. Its role later shifted from purely social resort activity toward internationally significant meetings. In 1936, the Palace hosted delegates connected with the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits. Five hundred diplomats invited by the Turkish Republic arrived on 23 June, and the treaty was signed in the hotel's Salle des Fêtes on 20 July at 10 p.m. A commemorative plaque remains associated with the event. The Second World War again reduced tourism, and the hotel was used as a hospital. In the postwar period it resumed its hospitality role and became increasingly associated with cultural figures and international events. Richard Strauss composed Four Last Songs while staying at the Palace. Vladimir Nabokov and Vera Nabokov lived there for the last seventeen years of his life, and Vera continued living at the property after his death. Since the first Montreux Jazz Festival in 1966, the hotel has also hosted many musicians connected with the festival. Its interiors have been used for screen productions, including Lady L, BBC filming and Kiss of the Dragon. The hotel has been modernized and redecorated while retaining its historical identity. It is recognized as a cultural property of national importance in Switzerland and is associated with Swiss Deluxe Hotels and Historic Hotels Worldwide. The property became part of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, and Fairmont joined AccorHotels in 2016. Its current offer combines 236 rooms and suites with restaurants, bars, a spa, pools, treatment areas, fitness facilities, shops, laundry and valet services, and 15 meeting rooms and ballrooms. The hotel continues to serve leisure travelers, cultural visitors, conference delegates and private-event guests. Its 2019 hosting of the Bilderberg Meeting demonstrated the continuing relevance of its historic event and diplomatic role.
