Overview
Eagle Rock Entertainment was a British music and entertainment content company focused on producing, acquiring and distributing filmed music performances, music documentaries and related programming. Founded in London in April 1997 by Terry Shand, Geoff Kempin and Julian Paul, three former Castle Communications colleagues, the company developed during a period when the recorded-music sector was expanding the commercial role of music video, concert film and archival programming beyond conventional audio albums. Its initial capital came from BMG, giving the new business backing within the established recorded-music industry. The company operated across several complementary activities. Eagle Rock’s production interests included filmed concerts, artist documentaries and music television programming, while its distribution activities covered physical and audiovisual releases as well as international licensing. The Eagle Vision division, established in 2000, became associated with the company’s visual-content activities. Eagle Rock also operated Eagle Records and Armoury Records, and maintained Eagle-i Music as a publishing subsidiary. This structure allowed the group to combine label, production, publishing and distribution capabilities rather than relying on a single release format. Ownership changed several times during the company’s independent period. Eagle Rock was acquired by Edel Records and was subsequently sold in its entirety in 2001 to British investment firm HgCapital for £34 million. Edel later reacquired a minority interest in 2007. The company maintained its London headquarters and developed a broader international operating footprint, including offices in New York and affiliate offices in other markets. Terry Shand remained a central figure and continued to lead the business as chairman and chief executive. A major strategic change came in April 2014, when Universal Music Group acquired Eagle Rock Entertainment. The transaction brought Eagle Rock into the world’s largest recorded-music group and placed its specialist music-film and programming capabilities alongside Universal’s extensive artist, label and catalogue resources. Eagle Rock’s work included concert and documentary projects connected with internationally recognized artists, helping convert live performance and music-history material into products for television, home entertainment, digital services and physical collectors’ markets. In 2020, Universal Music reorganized this activity by establishing Mercury Studios. Eagle Rock Entertainment and Universal’s UK-based Globe Productions creative division were absorbed into the new studio operation. This marked the end of Eagle Rock as a separately organized company, although its production expertise, catalogue relationships and music-focused screen-content activities continued within Universal’s broader audiovisual strategy. In 2024, Mercury Studios extended the live-music and documentary strategy through GIGS, a music channel launched on Samsung TV Plus and subsequently made available in the United Kingdom as a streaming channel on Freeview. Eagle Rock is therefore best understood today as a former independent corporate brand whose capabilities and catalogue legacy were incorporated into Mercury Studios.
History
Eagle Rock Entertainment was established in London in April 1997 by Terry Shand, Geoff Kempin and Julian Paul, who had previously worked together at Castle Communications. BMG provided the initial capital. The business was created as an international producer and distributor of music films and programming, a field that connected record-company catalogues with television, home entertainment and emerging digital distribution channels. The company expanded its activities through a combination of production, licensing, labels and publishing. Eagle Vision was created in 2000 as a visual-content division. Eagle Rock also operated Eagle Records and Armoury Records, while Eagle-i Music handled music publishing. These units supported releases ranging from concert films and artist documentaries to music programming and related recorded-music products. Eagle Rock’s ownership developed through several transactions. Edel Records acquired the company before selling it in 2001 to the British investment company HgCapital for £34 million. Edel AG later reacquired a minority stake in 2007. During this period Eagle Rock retained its London base and operated internationally, with an office in New York and affiliate offices in other parts of the world. Terry Shand continued to serve as chairman and chief executive, providing continuity through the ownership changes. The company’s specialist catalogue and production capabilities made it attractive to a major music group. Universal Music Group acquired Eagle Rock in April 2014, adding a dedicated music-film and programming operation to its broader collection of record labels, catalogues and artist services. Eagle Rock’s output included filmed live performances and documentaries connected with important artists and musical movements. Its documentary work received notable recognition when When You’re Strange, a documentary about The Doors, won a Grammy Award in 2010. Universal later reorganized its audiovisual activities. In 2020 it established Mercury Studios, which absorbed Eagle Rock Entertainment and Universal’s UK-based Globe Productions creative division. Eagle Rock consequently ceased to operate as a separately organized company, although its capabilities and content legacy continued within the Mercury Studios structure. The subsequent launch of GIGS in 2024 on Samsung TV Plus, followed by its UK availability as a Freeview streaming channel, illustrated the continuing relevance of live music and documentary programming within Universal’s studio strategy.
