Overview
A&M Records is an American record-label brand established in 1962 by musician Herb Alpert and music executive Jerry Moss. The company began as a small independent operation closely associated with Alpert's recordings, but developed into one of the most influential independent labels in the United States. Its name was derived from the founders' initials after an earlier attempt to use the name Carnival Records was abandoned because that name was already in use. During the 1960s and 1970s, A&M built a deliberately broad roster spanning pop, rock, jazz, soul, easy listening, folk, Latin-influenced music and singer-songwriter material. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass provided an early commercial foundation, while acts such as the Carpenters, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66, Burt Bacharach, Quincy Jones, Joan Baez, Billy Preston, Cat Stevens, Joe Cocker, Procol Harum, the Police, Supertramp, Peter Frampton, Squeeze and many others expanded the label's artistic reach. A&M also used licensing, distribution agreements and specialist imprints to operate across territories and genres. By the 1970s it was widely regarded as the world's largest independent record company. The label maintained an important physical base at the former Charlie Chaplin Studios on La Brea Avenue in Hollywood from 1966 until 1999. It established international operations and arrangements in the United Kingdom, Canada, Europe and Australia, and distributed or partnered with related labels including Ode Records and Myrrh. Its catalogue included both frontline releases and later reissues, while associated imprints addressed jazz, soul, Latin and dance music. In 1989, A&M was acquired by PolyGram for a reported $500 million. Alpert and Moss continued to manage the label for several years, but later sued PolyGram over contractual treatment of the company and settled in 1998. PolyGram was acquired by Seagram in 1998 and integrated into Universal Music Group. In January 1999, A&M's operations were combined with Interscope Records and Geffen Records in the Interscope Geffen A&M group. The former La Brea facility was closed as an A&M headquarters, employees were dismissed and some artists were dropped, although prominent performers including Sting, Sheryl Crow, Bryan Adams and Chris Cornell remained associated with the label system. A&M subsequently functioned less as an autonomous company and more as a catalogue and label identity within Universal. In 2007, Universal's Interscope Geffen A&M group partnered with Octone Records to relaunch the brand as A&M/Octone Records. After Interscope acquired Octone's interest in the joint venture in 2013, the roster and operations were restructured into Interscope in 2014. Today, selected A&M recordings are managed through Universal divisions including Interscope, Verve Records and Universal Music Enterprises. Some Herb Alpert recordings are handled through Herb Alpert Presents, while Sting has continued to use the A&M name and logo on selected releases, including The Bridge in 2021. A&M therefore remains active primarily as a historical label, catalogue identity, licensing mark and occasional release imprint rather than as an independently operating record company.
History
A&M Records was formed in late 1962 by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss. The founders first attempted to release music under the name Carnival Records, but changed course after discovering that the name was already taken. The new A&M name referred to Alpert and Moss. The company initially grew around Alpert's recordings and the commercial success of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, then expanded into a broad independent label with a reputation for combining commercial releases with a varied artist roster. The label's early catalogue included pop, jazz, Latin-influenced music, easy listening and instrumental recordings. During the 1960s and 1970s it signed or released music by artists such as the Carpenters, Burt Bacharach, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66, Quincy Jones, the Sandpipers, Joan Baez, Billy Preston, Cat Stevens, Joe Cocker, Procol Harum, Humble Pie, Free, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Supertramp, Peter Frampton, Squeeze and many others. A&M also released material through licensing and distribution relationships, including a 1970s arrangement involving Ode Records that brought releases by Carole King and Cheech & Chong into its distribution network. A&M expanded internationally through a United Kingdom base established in the late 1960s, A&M Records Ltd. in 1970, a Canadian company also formed in 1970, and a European operation established in 1977. It used different distribution partners in the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and other territories before building a more extensive international network. Specialty imprints included Omen for soul, Horizon for jazz, Almo International, AyM Discos, Vendetta for dance music and Tuff Break for hip-hop. A&M also worked with Myrrh, helping bring Amy Grant's recordings to a mainstream audience. From 1966 until 1999, the company operated from the former Charlie Chaplin Studios at 1416 North La Brea Avenue in Hollywood. This site became an important part of the label's identity and hosted offices and recording facilities. In 1989, A&M was sold to PolyGram. Alpert and Moss continued managing the label until 1993. They later brought a legal claim against PolyGram concerning the contractual integrity of the company; the dispute was settled in 1998. PolyGram was acquired by Seagram in 1998 and integrated into Universal Music Group. In January 1999, A&M's operations were merged with Interscope Records and Geffen Records, creating Interscope Geffen A&M. The La Brea operation closed, staff reductions followed and the company's autonomous identity was substantially diminished. Catalogue material outside the new group's principal pop, rock, rap and R&B focus was transferred to other Universal divisions, including Verve for much of the jazz catalogue. The former studios later became associated with the Jim Henson Company and Henson Recording Studios. The A&M name continued to appear on selected releases after the 1999 consolidation. In 2007, Interscope Geffen A&M and Octone Records created A&M/Octone Records, giving the brand a renewed frontline role. Octone exercised its buy/sell rights in 2013, after which Interscope acquired its interest and reorganized the roster in 2014. The A&M label then entered a period of operational dormancy. Nevertheless, its logo and name have remained visible on selected releases, notably Sting projects, and its historic recordings continue to be reissued, distributed and licensed through Universal-related operations. As of 2024, Interscope Geffen A&M sits within the Interscope Capitol Labels Group, while A&M functions principally as a heritage label and catalogue brand.
