Overview

Diageo plc is a British multinational alcoholic-beverage company headquartered in London. It was created in 1997 through the merger of Guinness plc and Grand Metropolitan plc, combining Guinness's brewing and spirits interests with Grand Metropolitan's drinks, hospitality and distribution assets. The name Diageo was developed by Wolff Olins from the Latin word for day and a Greek root associated with the earth, expressing the intended idea of a company serving consumers every day and around the world. The company is best known for a broad collection of international beverage brands. Its whisky portfolio includes Johnnie Walker, J&B, Buchanan's, Crown Royal, Bulleit, Lagavulin, Talisker, The Singleton and numerous other Scotch, American, Irish and Canadian whiskey labels. Other important brands include Smirnoff and Cîroc vodka; Gordon's, Tanqueray and Aviation gin; Don Julio, Casamigos and DeLeón tequila; Captain Morgan, Zacapa and Don Papa rum; Baileys, Pimm's and Mr Black liqueurs; and Guinness, Harp, Kilkenny, Smithwick's and Tusker beer. Diageo also owns or controls regional brands such as Shui Jing Fang baijiu and a substantial Turkish rakı portfolio. The company initially inherited businesses outside alcoholic beverages from its predecessors. It progressively sold those assets to concentrate on drinks, including Pillsbury in 2000 and Burger King in 2002. It also reshaped its beverage portfolio through acquisitions and divestitures. Notable additions included Mey Icki in Turkey, Ypióca in Brazil, a controlling interest in United Spirits in India and Sichuan Shuijingfang in China. Diageo later reduced its exposure to wine, selling most of its wine business to Treasury Wine Estates in 2015 and disposing of remaining wine assets in 2019. It has also sold selected legacy spirits brands, while investing in premiumization, tequila, whisky, ready-to-drink beverages and no- or low-alcohol products. Diageo operates production, maturation, blending, bottling and distribution facilities across multiple continents. Scotland is particularly important: the group operates a large network of malt and grain whisky distilleries and is one of the world's major Scotch whisky producers. It also owns a 34 percent interest in Moët Hennessy, the wines and spirits division associated with LVMH. Diageo's publicly traded shares are listed in London, where the company is a FTSE 100 constituent, and its American depositary receipts trade in New York under the symbol DEO. The company's positioning combines globally recognized heritage brands with premium and luxury spirits, mass-market drinks and regionally important labels. Its marketing and corporate-responsibility work includes responsible-drinking education through DRINKiQ and the Spirit of Progress program. Guinness has expanded beyond its traditional stout franchise into additional beer formats and major sports partnerships, while Diageo has developed alcohol-free extensions such as Gordon's 0.0%, Tanqueray 0.0%, Captain Morgan Spiced Gold 0.0% and Seedlip. Diageo remains an active global drinks group, although its manufacturing footprint, brand ownership and leadership have continued to change through restructuring, acquisitions and disposals.

History

Diageo emerged from the 1997 combination of Guinness plc and Grand Metropolitan plc. The transaction united Guinness's historic brewing and spirits activities with Grand Metropolitan's international drinks, hospitality and distribution interests. Diageo shares began trading on the London Stock Exchange in December 1997. The new company inherited a mixture of beverage brands and non-core businesses, and its early corporate strategy involved simplifying the portfolio around alcoholic drinks. The first stage of that simplification included the disposal of Pillsbury to General Mills in 2000 and Burger King to a consortium led by Texas Pacific in 2002. Diageo also participated with Pernod Ricard in the acquisition of Seagram's beverage operations in 2001. Regulatory requirements connected with that transaction led to the sale of Malibu rum to Allied Domecq in 2002. These moves helped establish Diageo as a focused drinks company rather than a diversified consumer conglomerate. During the 2010s Diageo expanded in emerging and strategically important spirits markets. It acquired Turkish drinks producer Mey Icki in 2011, Brazilian cachaça maker Ypióca in 2012, and a majority stake in India's United Spirits in the same year. In 2013 it acquired Sichuan Shuijingfang in China, strengthening its presence in baijiu. The company also retained a 34 percent interest in Moët Hennessy, the wines and spirits business jointly associated with Diageo and LVMH. Portfolio management remained a defining feature. Diageo sold the Gleneagles Hotel in 2015, divested major beer interests and regional rights to Heineken, and sold most of its wine business to Treasury Wine Estates. It later sold remaining wine brands, including Navarro Correas and Chalone Vineyard, effectively leaving wine as a direct operating category while maintaining its Moët Hennessy interest. In 2018, several legacy brands were sold to Sazerac, although Seagram's Seven Crown was retained. Manufacturing decisions generated controversy as well as investment. In 2009 Diageo announced the closure of the Johnnie Walker blending and bottling facility in Kilmarnock and the Port Dundas grain distillery in Glasgow. The Kilmarnock site closed in 2012 after strong criticism from employees, local communities and politicians. Conversely, the reopening of Port Ellen in 2024 represented a major investment in the revival of a historically important Scotch whisky site. Leadership changed significantly after the long tenures of Paul Walsh and Ivan Menezes. Menezes led the company from 2013 until his death in 2023, after which Debra Crew became chief executive. Crew left the role in 2025, followed by an interim period under Nik Jhangiani and the appointment of Sir Dave Lewis as chief executive from January 2026, according to the supplied reference material. In recent years Diageo has emphasized premium spirits, tequila, whisky, global brand building, responsible consumption and alcohol-free innovation. Its portfolio includes extensions such as Gordon's 0.0%, Tanqueray 0.0%, Captain Morgan Spiced Gold 0.0%, Seedlip and Ritual Zero Proof. The company has also used large-scale cultural and sports partnerships to support brands such as Guinness. At the same time, regulatory scrutiny, distributor practices, advertising criticism and supply-chain restructuring have remained recurring issues.
