Overview

CITIC Pacific Special Steel Group Co., Ltd. is a Chinese special steel producer and a subsidiary of CITIC Pacific, which is in turn part of the CITIC Limited conglomerate under CITIC Group. The group was established in Shanghai in 2008 and moved its base to Jiangyin, Jiangsu, in 2016. It is the world's largest producer of special steel, with an annual production capacity of approximately 16 million tonnes. In 2020, it produced about 14 million tonnes of crude steel, ranking among the world's thirty largest steel producers. The company manufactures plates, bars, wire rods, forged steel, and seamless tubes in high-strength and durable steel grades. These products are further processed into automotive components, bearings, gears, springs, chains, and similar items, serving industries such as automotive, machinery, energy installations, high-rise construction, and bridges. Bars account for nearly half of production. The automotive industry is the largest customer group, taking about one-third of output, followed by machinery at nearly one-quarter. About 10% of production is exported to Southeast Asia, the United States, and the European Union. CITIC Pacific Special Steel Group operates plants located near coastal ports or along the Yangtze River, providing logistical advantages. Its sister company, CITIC Mining International, holds significant mining rights in western Australia, supplying about 21 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate to the steel mills in 2021. The group was reorganized and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 2019. In 2021, it acquired a 20.4% stake in Tianjin Pipe Corporation, China's largest seamless tube producer, which has since been managed by the group.
