Overview

Amoy Food is a Hong Kong-origin food manufacturer and brand whose core business has historically centered on soy sauce, cooking sauces and other condiments. Its roots extend to Tao Fa, a soy sauce and soy milk producer founded in Xiamen in 1908, while the Amoy business itself was established in Hong Kong in 1928. The name Amoy is an English romanisation of the Min Nan pronunciation of Xiamen, a city in Fujian province that is known as Xiamen in Mandarin. By the mid-twentieth century, the business operated as Amoy Canning Corporation and had a factory in Ngau Tau Kok together with an office in Sheung Wan. The company developed from a local Hong Kong food manufacturer into a broader packaged-food business. Its traditional identity was built around sauces and seasonings, especially soy sauce, but its range later expanded to include other foodstuffs, frozen products and foods designed for microwave heating. Amoy went through several changes in ownership during the second half of the twentieth century. Sime Darby acquired a 50 percent interest in 1977, followed by Hang Lung Development's acquisition of a controlling interest in 1980. Pillsbury acquired half of Amoy Food in 1983, and the company became wholly owned by the French dairy group Danone in 1991. Danone sold the business to Japan's Ajinomoto on 12 January 2006. In 2018, Ajinomoto sold Amoy to CITIC Capital, a subsidiary of CITIC Group. Manufacturing also changed over time. A plant was established at Tai Po Industrial Estate in 1987. In 2013, Amoy's frozen-food factory in China was relocated to the Tai Po Industrial Estate in Hong Kong. The company's former Ngau Tau Kok factory site, sold in the 1970s, was later redeveloped as Amoy Gardens, an apartment complex whose name preserves the site's connection with the brand. Amoy products have been sold outside Hong Kong and are described as being available around the world. In Europe, distribution has been associated with Kraft Heinz. The brand therefore combines a Hong Kong culinary identity with an international packaged-food footprint. Its present portfolio is broader than its original sauce-making base, but sauces, soy-based seasonings and everyday cooking products remain central to its recognition.
