Overview
BMW is the principal automotive and motorcycle marque of BMW Group, a German multinational manufacturer headquartered in Munich. The name derives from Bayerische Motoren Werke, or Bavarian Motor Works. Although the modern company’s official origin is generally dated to 1916, its corporate history combines several Bavarian aviation and engine businesses. Rapp Motorenwerke, founded by Karl Rapp, adopted the BMW name in 1917, while Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, descended from Gustav Otto’s aircraft enterprise, became the corporate structure that carried the name and assets forward in 1922. The company began with aircraft engines, including the technically important BMW IIIa straight-six developed by Max Friz. Postwar restrictions forced BMW to diversify into railway brakes, industrial engines, agricultural equipment, household goods and bicycles. Motorcycles became an important new direction: the BMW R32, introduced in 1923, established the opposed-twin boxer-engine layout and shaft-drive engineering associated with BMW Motorrad for much of the twentieth century. BMW entered automobile manufacturing in 1928 after acquiring Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, initially producing the Austin Seven-based Dixi and then selling a version as the BMW 3/15. During the 1930s, the company expanded into sports cars and larger luxury vehicles. The Second World War brought aircraft-engine and military production, the use of forced labor, factory destruction and a postwar prohibition on producing aircraft and motor vehicles. BMW survived by making household products and bicycles before restarting motorcycle production in 1948 and automobile production with the BMW 501 in 1952. The Isetta microcar broadened access to the brand in the mid-1950s, but low margins and weak luxury-car demand left BMW near a takeover by Daimler-Benz in 1959. Investment by Herbert and Harald Quandt helped preserve BMW’s independence. The compact BMW 700 and, more decisively, the 1961 New Class sedan restored the company’s financial health and established its modern sporting premium-car identity. BMW subsequently organized its range into recognizable series, including the 5 Series in 1972, 3 Series in 1975, 6 Series in 1976 and 7 Series in 1977–78. BMW Motorsport, founded in 1972 and now known as BMW M, transferred racing expertise into road cars such as the M1, M5 and M3. The company also expanded into roadsters, performance coupes and sport-utility vehicles, with the X5 becoming its first SUV/SAV in 1999. BMW’s international growth included manufacturing and sales operations across Europe, the Americas, Asia and other regions. Its 1994 acquisition of the Rover Group generated substantial losses; BMW later divested most Rover activities while retaining Mini. In 1998, BMW acquired rights associated with the Rolls-Royce automobile marque and subsequently established Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as a separate luxury business within BMW Group. The group’s automobile portfolio is therefore marketed under BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce, while motorcycles are sold under BMW Motorrad. In the twenty-first century, BMW combined combustion, hybrid and battery-electric development rather than immediately abandoning a multi-powertrain strategy. The ActiveHybrid 7 was its first hybrid production model, while the BMW i3, launched in 2013, became its first modern mass-produced electric car. The i sub-brand also produced the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car and later the iX and i4. BMW introduced front-wheel-drive architecture with the 2 Series Active Tourer in 2014, broadening the technical scope beyond its historic rear-wheel-drive vehicles. BMW’s current strategic direction centers on the Neue Klasse architecture and a software-oriented vehicle ecosystem. The first production Neue Klasse model, the electric iX3, was announced for 2025 and combines sixth-generation eDrive, an 800-volt electrical system, new computing architecture, digital interfaces and greater use of circular materials. History
BMW’s corporate lineage reaches back to Gustav Otto’s aircraft enterprise and the reorganization of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in 1916. Karl Rapp’s engine company adopted the BMW name in 1917, and the name, trademark and engine activities were transferred into the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke structure in 1922. Early production focused on aircraft engines, but the postwar settlement required diversification. Railway brakes, industrial products and motorcycles became central, and the R32 of 1923 established BMW’s enduring boxer-motorcycle tradition. Automobile production began after the 1928 acquisition of Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach. BMW initially built licensed small cars before developing its own sports and luxury products during the 1930s. Wartime production centered on aircraft engines and involved extensive forced labor, a historical responsibility later addressed in BMW’s corporate remembrance and historical research. Allied bombing and postwar production restrictions left the company severely weakened. BMW returned first to motorcycles and then to cars, but its luxury saloons and microcars produced insufficient financial returns. In 1959, the Quandt family’s investment prevented a takeover by Daimler-Benz. The New Class sedan launched in 1961 and became the decisive turning point. It combined compact dimensions, modern engines and sporting road manners, creating the template for BMW’s later premium positioning. The company expanded through the 1970s with the 5, 3, 6 and 7 Series, established BMW Motorsport in 1972, and developed a global sales and manufacturing presence. M performance vehicles, roadsters and the X5 broadened the brand while retaining its engineering-led identity. BMW’s 1990s diversification was mixed. The Rover acquisition brought Mini into the group but also caused major financial losses; most Rover assets were sold in 2000. BMW retained Mini and acquired Rolls-Royce brand rights in 1998, later building a dedicated Rolls-Royce automobile operation. BMW Motorrad continued as a major motorcycle business, with production centered in Berlin and model families spanning touring, adventure, roadster, sport and heritage categories. Since 2000, BMW has developed turbocharged engines, hybrid vehicles and electric models. The i3 and i8 demonstrated a dedicated approach to electrification, followed by the i4, iX and other battery-electric derivatives. The company also adopted front-wheel-drive platforms for selected compact vehicles and expanded its SAV range. Its mobility-services venture with Daimler was combined in 2018, although BMW’s main strategic emphasis remained vehicle design, manufacturing and premium customer experience. Neue Klasse represents the next major technological transition. BMW describes it as a scalable foundation for electric propulsion, software, advanced computing, digital interaction and improved material circularity. The iX3 is the first production model of this phase, with further models planned across the BMW portfolio. The brand continues to operate globally while balancing combustion, hybrid and electric products, regulatory requirements, supply-chain resilience and the expectations associated with a premium performance marque.

BMW recalls 27,720 vehicles over driveshaft flaw
BMW planned to recall 27,720 vehicles across its 5 Series, 7 Series and 8 Series model lines because excessive wear at the connection between the driveshaft and rear differential could cause a loss of power to the rear wheels and increase the risk of a crash or rollaway if the parking brake is not applied. The recall was filed with NHTSA. BMW said it had received no reports of accidents or injuries, planned to notify owners by Oct. 2, and dealers would apply an adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear differential for free.

BMW recalls 5, 7 and 8 Series vehicles in Canada and the U.S. over drivetrain roll-away risk
BMW is recalling 826 gasoline-powered 5 Series (2021-2023), 8 Series coupe and Gran Coupe (2022-2024), and plug-in-hybrid 7 Series (2024-2026) vehicles in Canada, plus another 27,720 vehicles in the U.S., because the joint where the driveshaft bolts to the rear differential could wear out faster than expected, potentially causing loss of power to the wheels or the vehicle moving when parked without the parking brake. BMW urges owners to use the parking brake and says the fix requires dealership inspection and reinforcement of the joint with adhesive or replacement of affected parts. BMW says it has received no reports of incidents or injury in the U.S. Transport Canada's recall reference number is 2026-391 and BMW's internal code is 26 80 26RC.

BMW recalls imported i3 electric vehicles
BMW (China) filed a recall plan for 45 imported i3 electric vehicles manufactured between January 9 and February 21, 2019. According to the filing, insufficient galvanizing on a circuit board could cause the motor control unit to fail, potentially cutting high-voltage power and drive force. BMW stated that it would replace the affected units free of charge.
2019
BMW recalls 67 vehicles in China
BMW China Automotive Trading Co., Ltd. and BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. filed a recall plan covering 67 imported BMW 730Li and Z4 vehicles and locally made BMW 325i and 325Li vehicles. The vehicles may have an engine balance-shaft bearing defect that could lead to engine damage and, in the worst case, engine shutdown while driving. The companies said they would replace the affected vehicles' engines free of charge.
