Overview

Barracuda Networks is a United States-based cybersecurity company that develops network appliances, cloud services, and software for protecting business communications, applications, networks, and data. Founded in 2003 by Dean Drako, Michael Perone, and Zach Levow, the company initially built its business around the Barracuda Spam and Virus Firewall, a purpose-built appliance designed to filter malicious and unwanted email. Its early proposition combined specialized security hardware with comparatively straightforward deployment and administration, helping it appeal particularly to small and medium-sized businesses and distributed organizations. The company expanded from email filtering into a broader portfolio. Its products and services have included email security, secure access, firewalls, web application security, data backup and recovery, cloud-based web filtering, application delivery and protection, and security operations capabilities. This expansion was supported both by internal product development and a succession of acquisitions. NetContinuum added application-security and application-delivery capabilities; Yosemite Technologies strengthened backup software; phion contributed enterprise firewall technology; Purewire added cloud web filtering; Intronis broadened managed backup and disaster-recovery offerings; Sonian contributed cloud archiving and email-security technology; PhishLine added security-awareness and phishing-simulation capabilities; and later acquisitions such as Fyde and SKOUT Cybersecurity expanded zero-trust and managed detection capabilities. Barracuda also developed a global channel-oriented business model. Its products have been sold through resellers, managed service providers, and other technology partners, allowing the company to reach organizations that may not maintain large internal security teams. The business has therefore positioned itself as a broad, integrated security and data-protection provider rather than as a vendor focused on one narrowly defined security category. Its portfolio is intended to cover preventive controls, detection, continuity, recovery, and operational management across email, networks, applications, and cloud environments. The company received its first outside investment in 2006 from Sequoia Capital and Francisco Partners. It later became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange in 2013 under the ticker CUDA. In 2017, Thoma Bravo announced an agreement to take Barracuda private, and the transaction was completed in February 2018. KKR announced an agreement to acquire the company from Thoma Bravo in 2022, with the transaction completed in August of that year. Barracuda is consequently a privately held cybersecurity brand operating under KKR ownership. Barracuda’s history also includes legal and security-related controversies. Trend Micro sued the company in 2008 over the use of Clam AntiVirus and alleged patent infringement; Barracuda responded with a countersuit involving patents it had acquired from IBM. In 2013, researchers reported undocumented backdoor accounts in some Barracuda firewall, VPN, and spam-filtering products, an incident that highlighted the security expectations placed on a security vendor. More recently, the company has emphasized consolidated cloud and AI-assisted security management. In 2025 it released BarracudaONE, described as an AI-powered platform bringing together email protection, data backup, threat detection, and extended detection and response capabilities.

History

Barracuda Networks was established in 2003 by Dean Drako, Michael Perone, and Zach Levow. Its first major product was the Barracuda Spam and Virus Firewall, introduced during the founding year. The appliance addressed a growing need for organizations to filter unsolicited email and malware without deploying a complex enterprise security infrastructure. The company’s early model combined specialized hardware with security software and centralized management. Barracuda secured its first outside investment in January 2006, raising capital from Sequoia Capital and Francisco Partners. The company moved its headquarters to Campbell, California, in 2007 and opened an office in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ann Arbor became an important research and development location. The facility expanded in 2008, and by 2012 the Michigan division had grown to approximately 180 employees and moved into a larger downtown office complex. During the late 2000s and early 2010s, Barracuda broadened its business through acquisitions. In 2007 it acquired NetContinuum, adding technology for securing and managing enterprise web applications. In 2008 it acquired BitLeap and 3SP. Yosemite Technologies followed in 2009, bringing software agents for incremental backups of applications and Windows system states. Barracuda also acquired a controlling interest in Austria-based phion AG in 2009, strengthening its enterprise firewall portfolio, and purchased Purewire later that year to expand cloud-based web filtering and security. The company continued developing its security and data-protection portfolio. In 2008 it introduced the Barracuda Reputation Block List, a publicly available dynamic list of known spam servers intended for use in gateway filtering. In 2012, Barracuda became a co-sponsor of the Garmin-Barracuda professional cycling team, a notable marketing association outside its core technology activities. Leadership changed in July 2012 when co-founder Dean Drako stepped down from his operating role while remaining on the board. William “BJ” Jenkins, a longtime EMC executive, became president and chief executive officer in November of that year. Barracuda became a public company in November 2013, listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CUDA. Its acquisition program continued with SignNow in 2013, C2C Systems in 2014, Intronis in 2015, and Sonian in 2017. These transactions expanded the company’s reach into digital-signature-related technology, email archiving, managed backup, cloud data protection, and related services. In 2015 Barracuda added a next-generation firewall to its firewall family. The company acquired PhishLine in 2018, Fyde in 2020, and SKOUT Cybersecurity in 2021, adding security-awareness, zero-trust, and managed security capabilities. Barracuda’s ownership changed substantially in the following years. Thoma Bravo announced a $1.6 billion agreement to acquire the company in November 2017, and completed the transaction in February 2018, taking Barracuda private. KKR announced an agreement to purchase Barracuda from Thoma Bravo in April 2022; the transaction was completed in August 2022. Barracuda remains an active private cybersecurity company under KKR ownership. The company’s history also includes legal and security incidents. Trend Micro sued Barracuda in January 2008 over its use of the open-source Clam AntiVirus software and alleged infringement of a patent related to antivirus detection at SMTP or FTP gateways. Barracuda challenged the patent and later filed a countersuit asserting that Trend Micro infringed patents Barracuda had acquired from IBM. In January 2013, Austrian security researchers reported undocumented backdoor accounts in certain Barracuda firewall, VPN, and spam-filtering equipment. The disclosure created reputational concerns for a company whose products were intended to protect customer systems. Barracuda has subsequently emphasized cloud-delivered protection and integrated security management, culminating in the 2025 release of BarracudaONE, an AI-powered platform combining several protection and detection functions.
