History
Wärtsilä traces its origins to 12 April 1834, when authorities approved construction of a sawmill in Tohmajärvi, in the Grand Duchy of Finland. Industrialist Nils Ludvig Arppe later took control of the operation and developed an ironworks at the site. The company was renamed Wärtsilä Ab in 1898, establishing the name that would later become associated with Finnish engineering and heavy industry. The company's transition toward engine manufacturing began in 1938, when it signed a license agreement with Friedrich Krupp Germania Werft.
