Overview

VMLY&R was a global advertising and marketing communications company within WPP. It was formed in 2018 by combining VML, a digitally oriented agency founded in Kansas City in 1992, with Young & Rubicam, the long-established advertising network founded in Philadelphia in 1923. The merger was intended to unite VML’s digital, technology, data and integrated-marketing capabilities with Y&R’s international advertising heritage, creative resources and established client relationships. The resulting agency worked across brand strategy, advertising, digital and social media, direct marketing, sales promotion, brand identity, public relations and related consulting. Its work ranged from mass-market consumer advertising to business-to-business communications, healthcare marketing, multicultural marketing and brand-performance research. The agency’s stated operating model emphasized integrated teams rather than a strict separation between traditional advertising, digital work and customer-experience services. Before its final integration into VML, VMLY&R had more than 13,000 employees and operated from more than 80 offices worldwide. Principal locations included Kansas City, New York, London, São Paulo, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney. Its international footprint reflected the inherited networks of both VML and Y&R, while specialist practices and agencies broadened its scope. These included BAV Group, which used the BrandAssetValuator research platform for brand and marketing strategy; multicultural communications operations such as The Bravo Group and Kang & Lee; and healthcare communications capabilities associated with Sudler & Hennessey. The agency’s historical portfolio included influential consumer campaigns for Burger King, Xerox, Marks & Spencer, Johnson & Johnson and Lay’s. One of the best-known later examples was Burger King’s 2015 “McWhopper” initiative, created by Y&R New Zealand, which proposed a temporary collaboration with McDonald’s to promote World Peace Day. Other recognized work included the gender-representation-focused Whole Story Project, Xerox’s “Brother Dominic” campaign, Marks & Spencer’s “Christmas With Love, Mrs. Claus,” the Band-Aid jingle campaign and Lay’s “Betcha/Devil” work. VMLY&R was not an independently listed company. It operated as part of WPP, which had acquired Y&R in 2000 and brought VML into the group in 2001. On October 17, 2023, WPP announced that VMLY&R and Wunderman Thompson would be merged into a new global agency called VML. That consolidation ended VMLY&R as a standalone agency brand, although many of its people, clients, capabilities and offices continued within VML.

History

VMLY&R’s history is rooted in two predecessor agencies with different but complementary traditions. Young & Rubicam was established in Philadelphia in 1923 by John Orr Young and Raymond Rubicam. The agency moved to New York in 1926 after securing work for the newly formed Jell-O company and later occupied offices at 285 Madison Avenue for 87 years. During the 1960s, Y&R was among the agencies helping develop the possibilities of color television advertising. Under chief executive Edward N. Ney in the 1970s, it expanded through acquisitions, including Wunderman Ricotta & Kline, Cato Johnson and Burson-Marsteller. The agency also acquired Landor Associates and other specialist businesses, creating a diversified communications group. Y&R’s expansion continued internationally during the 1980s and 1990s. The company explored partnerships with Dentsu and Eurocom, although one arrangement broke down after Eurocom withdrew. In the 1990s, Y&R faced bribery-related charges connected with a Jamaican tourism account. Peter Georgescu became chief executive in 1994 and pursued operational streamlining before the company resumed an acquisition program across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Hellman & Friedman became Y&R’s first outside investor in 1996. Y&R completed an initial public offering on May 15, 1998, becoming a publicly traded company, but in 2000 it was acquired by WPP Group. VML was founded in Kansas City in 1992 by John Valentine, Scott McCormick and Craig Ligibel. Its original name, Valentine McCormick Ligibel, supplied the initials VML. The agency presented itself as an integrated online and offline communications firm, combining advertising with business consulting and software application development. Early clients included Colgate-Palmolive, Coca-Cola and American Express. In June 2001, WPP announced an agreement to bring VML into the group as a standalone agency network. The 2018 merger of VML and Y&R created VMLY&R. At the time of the combination, VML had approximately 3,000 employees in 33 locations, while Y&R contributed a much larger international advertising network and a substantial portfolio of specialist capabilities. VMLY&R was positioned as a global agency able to connect creative advertising, digital products, data, brand consulting and customer communications. Its activities covered consumer advertising, social media, direct marketing, healthcare, public relations, multicultural marketing and brand identity. Several predecessor businesses and practices became part of the broader VMLY&R structure. Sudler & Hennessey, a healthcare communications company founded in 1941 and acquired by Y&R in 1973, worked on communications for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, medical devices, nutrition, veterinary medicine and other healthcare fields. BAV Group operated the BrandAssetValuator platform, using consumer perceptions and social data to advise clients on brand momentum and marketing performance. The Bravo Group and Kang & Lee focused on communications for Hispanic and Asian communities in the United States. VMLY&R also had connections to TAXI, a Montreal-founded integrated marketing company known for branding, creative, digital and production work. The agency’s public profile was shaped by campaigns inherited from Y&R and by work produced under the combined VMLY&R organization. Notable examples included the Band-Aid advertising associated with the jingle “I am stuck on Band-Aid,” Lay’s “Betcha/Devil” work, Xerox’s updated “Brother Dominic” campaign, Marks & Spencer’s “Christmas With Love, Mrs. Claus,” and Burger King’s “McWhopper” proposal. The Whole Story Project used augmented reality to draw attention to the small proportion of public statues in the United States representing historical women. VMLY&R ultimately became part of another WPP consolidation. On October 17, 2023, WPP announced the merger of VMLY&R and Wunderman Thompson into VML. The change brought together capabilities from the two agencies under the VML name and ended VMLY&R as a separate operating brand. Its legacy therefore survives primarily through the successor VML organization, inherited client relationships, specialist practices and campaign work.
