Overview

Superunion was a global brand and design consultancy headquartered in London and owned by WPP. The organization was created in January 2018 through the merger of five agencies: Brand Union, The Partners, Lambie-Nairn, Addison, and VBAT. Its creation brought together capabilities in corporate identity, brand strategy, naming, packaging, visual identity, environmental design, digital experience, and broadcast or motion branding under one international network. Although the Superunion name dates from 2018, its institutional history reaches back several decades through the agencies that were combined to form it. One important predecessor was Sampson Tyrrell, established in 1976 by Terry Tyrrell and Sam Sampson after the founders received an opportunity to work on the corporate identity of British Gas. The firm later expanded its design work for clients including Kodak, Lowrey, London Docklands Development Corporation, and Legal & General. Dave Allen joined in 1984, helping the business win additional work from organizations such as Citizen, Mazda, and Castrol. WPP acquired Sampson Tyrrell in 1986. Another major strand of the heritage came through Enterprise IG, a network formed in the 1990s in response to the internationalization of brands and the growing need for coordinated identity work across markets. The network incorporated or worked with businesses including Lambie-Nairn & Company and other regional design firms. Through organic growth and acquisitions, Enterprise IG developed a substantial international footprint. In 2007 it adopted the Brand Union name. Lambie-Nairn contributed particular expertise in broadcast identity and motion branding, while the other predecessor agencies added corporate, consumer, packaging, retail, and environmental design capabilities. Superunion was intended to operate as a unified global consultancy rather than simply as a collection of local agencies. Reference material describes the business as employing approximately 500 people across 16 offices. Its work focused on helping organizations define or renew their brands, translate strategy into visual and verbal systems, and apply those systems consistently across products, services, communications, and physical or digital environments. It served corporate, consumer, cultural, and institutional clients, although the available reference material does not provide a complete client list or a reliable breakdown of revenue by market. The brand had a relatively short independent life. In 2022, WPP announced plans to combine Superunion with Design Bridge, another WPP-owned design consultancy. The transaction was completed in April 2023, creating Design Bridge and Partners. As a result, Superunion is best treated as a defunct or absorbed consultancy brand rather than as an active standalone organization. Its predecessor agencies and accumulated capabilities continued within the successor business, but the reference material does not establish a separate post-merger operating identity for Superunion.

History

Superunion was established in January 2018 when five WPP-owned agencies—Brand Union, The Partners, Lambie-Nairn, Addison, and VBAT—were brought together. The merger created a global brand and design consultancy headquartered in London, with capabilities spanning brand strategy, corporate identity, packaging, digital design, environmental branding, and broadcast or motion identity. The organization was reported to have approximately 500 employees across 16 offices. The history of Superunion's constituent businesses extended back to the 1970s. In May 1976, Terry Tyrrell and Sam Sampson founded Sampson Tyrrell. The opportunity that prompted the firm was work on the corporate identity of British Gas. During its early years, Sampson Tyrrell handled assignments for Kodak, Lowrey, the London Docklands Development Corporation, and Legal & General. By 1984, the company had grown to about ten employees. Dave Allen joined that year and helped accelerate its development, with new work associated with clients such as Citizen, Mazda, and Castrol. WPP acquired Sampson Tyrrell in 1986, after which the business expanded rapidly; by 1991 it employed more than 100 people in London. A second major historical line developed through Brand Union and Enterprise IG. In 1992, Brand Union and Robinson Lambie-Nairn partnered to support design work extending beyond their established branding and broadcast specialties. Robinson Lambie-Nairn itself had been founded in 1976 by Colin Robinson and Martin Lambie-Nairn. In the same period, Sampson and Allen helped establish Enterprise Identity Group with Jim Johnson of Anspach Grossman Portugal, Flavio Gomez of Sidjakov Berman Gomez, and Miles Young of Ogilvy & Mather in Asia. The initiative reflected the increasingly international nature of brand management, particularly in Asian markets. The participating businesses were brought under the Enterprise IG name, launched in 1996, with Allen and Johnson as joint chief executives. Enterprise IG grew through both internal development and acquisitions. In 1999 it became the holding company for Lambie-Nairn & Company. Subsequent additions included Horniak and Canny in Australia, Springham Anderson in Singapore, Brindfors Design in Stockholm, Winderlich Design in Hamburg, and Brown KSDP. The Brown KSDP transaction added offices and capabilities in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Amsterdam, and Paris. By 2001, Enterprise IG was described as having more than 19 offices and over 700 employees, with revenue above $100 million; those historical financial figures are retained here only as reported in the reference material and are not independently detailed in this dossier. The company also acquired The Identity Business in Ireland in 2001. In October 2007, Enterprise IG formally adopted the Brand Union name. Martin Lambie-Nairn left Lambie-Nairn & Company in 2008. The 2018 Superunion merger was designed to consolidate these complementary histories into a single international consultancy. Superunion worked across corporate and consumer brand assignments, identity systems, packaging, digital and service experiences, physical environments, and motion or broadcast design. The available material does not identify a complete roster of clients, financial results, or individual Superunion executives. The independent Superunion brand lasted until its combination with Design Bridge. WPP announced the planned merger in 2022, and the transaction was completed in April 2023. The resulting organization was named Design Bridge and Partners. Superunion therefore became part of the successor consultancy rather than continuing as a separately operating brand.
