History

Universal International Studios originated in July 2005, when NBCUniversal created an international television production arm intended to work with media companies in different territories. Initially known as NBCUniversal International Television Production, the unit focused on licensing formats and creating local versions of NBCUniversal programming, while also developing original content for international broadcasters and platforms. Leslie Jones was identified as the president of the new operation. In 2007, NBCUniversal broadened the business by establishing a London-based international production division. The division was designed to develop scripted and reality programming, manage format licensing, and support the company's expansion beyond conventional distribution. Angela Bromstad led the new production operation, while Peter Smith was involved in the wider international expansion effort. London became the principal European base for the division. The first major acquisition came in August 2008, when NBCUniversal International Television Production acquired a controlling interest in Carnival Films from Australia's Southern Star Group. Carnival's existing creative identity was retained, while NBCUniversal gained a stronger position in British drama production and assumed distribution responsibilities for the company's productions. The transaction marked a shift from format licensing alone toward ownership of established local production capabilities. In February 2010, the international operation formed Working Title Television with Working Title Films. Based in London, the joint venture was intended to produce drama and comedy and added another route through which NBCUniversal could combine international creative development with the resources of a major studio group. The company expanded into Australia in May 2011 by acquiring a majority stake in Matchbox Pictures. Matchbox's founders continued to operate the company, preserving its local production expertise while connecting its projects to NBCUniversal's international distribution network. NBCUniversal later took full control of Matchbox Pictures in early 2014. The Australian expansion gave the international studio a substantial production presence outside the United Kingdom. The business increased its emphasis on unscripted programming in December 2013 by creating a dedicated development unit for factual and entertainment content. This unit worked alongside related production businesses including Monkey Kingdom and Chocolate Media, Matchbox Pictures, and Canadian partner Lark Productions. David Mortimer was identified as the senior executive responsible for factual and entertainment development. The structure allowed NBCUniversal to coordinate unscripted production across several territories while retaining local creative operations. In November 2021, NBCUniversal International Studios was renamed Universal International Studios. The change aligned the operation with Universal Studio Group and with sibling production labels such as Universal Television, Universal Content Productions, and Universal Television Alternative Studio. Under the Universal International Studios name, the business continued to develop scripted and unscripted programming, adapt NBCUniversal formats, and produce content for international networks and platforms, including Sky and Peacock where relevant. Later reference material describes further changes to the international production structure. In 2025, Universal Studio Group planned to move parts of the international unscripted operation, including Monkey Kingdom and the unscripted division of Matchbox Pictures, under Universal Television Alternative Studio. The same material states that Matchbox Pictures and Tony Ayres Productions were closed in 2026, with Universal International Studios expected to continue Australian production through local producer relationships. It also describes a 2026 merger involving Universal Content Productions, after which the combined operation was renamed Universal Global Television. Because these events are dated beyond the otherwise established historical record and the current legal status is not independently confirmed here, they should be treated as reference-reported developments rather than a fully verified current corporate chronology.
