Overview

Technip Energies is a French engineering, technology and project-delivery company focused on large and technically complex facilities in the energy and chemicals industries. Its work spans front-end engineering and design, engineering, procurement, construction management, technology licensing, project execution and related services. The company is particularly associated with liquefied natural gas infrastructure, including the design and construction of LNG liquefaction plants and facilities for the handling and transportation of liquefied gases. The company was created through the separation of TechnipFMC into two independent businesses. TechnipFMC had itself been formed through the combination of French engineering group Technip and United States-based FMC Technologies. In August 2019, TechnipFMC announced that it intended to divide its activities between a technology-and-services company, which retained the TechnipFMC name, and an engineering-and-construction company that would become Technip Energies. The separation became effective in February 2021, with the spinoff completed on 12 February 2021. Technip Energies and TechnipFMC subsequently operated as independent companies without capital ties. LNG and natural-gas-related projects have historically represented the largest part of Technip Energies' business, accounting for more than 60% of turnover according to the referenced company description. Refining and petrochemicals together have represented approximately a quarter to three-tenths of turnover. The company has described itself as a global leader in the construction of LNG plants and has participated in a substantial share of installed hydrogen-production capacity. Its portfolio includes large-scale gas liquefaction, LNG loading systems, refinery conversion, petrochemical facilities, hydrogen production, sustainable aviation fuel, carbon capture and storage, waste-to-energy decarbonization, and low-carbon ammonia. Technip Energies has also sought to broaden its identity beyond conventional hydrocarbons. Its lower-carbon activities include carbon capture, utilization and storage; blue and green hydrogen; renewable fuels; advanced biofuels; sustainable aviation fuel; low-carbon ammonia; and technologies intended to reduce industrial emissions. The company has participated in industrial collaborations such as Rely, a hydrogen-focused venture developed with John Cockerill, and has created Reju, a business focused on recycling textile-based polyethylene terephthalate. It has also worked with partners on the use of captured carbon as a feedstock for materials. Major projects demonstrate the scale and geographic reach of the business. Technip Energies was the main contractor on the Yamal LNG development in Russia and later participated in the Arctic LNG 2 project before exiting it in 2023 amid sanctions and geopolitical restrictions. In Qatar, it worked with Chiyoda on a multibillion-dollar LNG expansion awarded by QatarEnergy. Other significant assignments include carbon-capture infrastructure in Norway and the United Kingdom, refinery decarbonization projects in Portugal, low-carbon LNG facilities in Abu Dhabi, and a blue-ammonia plant in Louisiana. The company was reported to operate in 34 countries with approximately 17,000 employees in 2025. It is listed on Euronext Paris under the symbol TE. Its strategic challenge is to balance its established LNG, refining and petrochemical engineering base with growth in carbon management, hydrogen, renewable fuels and other energy-transition technologies. The company remains active, while its precise financial and operational profile changes with project awards, sanctions exposure, joint ventures and acquisitions.

History

Technip Energies was established as an independent company through the separation of TechnipFMC's engineering and construction activities. TechnipFMC had been formed through the merger of French group Technip and American company FMC Technologies. In August 2019, TechnipFMC chief executive Doug Pferdehirt announced a plan to divide the combined business into two independent engineering companies. The company retaining the TechnipFMC name would concentrate on technology and services, while the engineering and construction business would be renamed Technip Energies. In January 2021, chief executive Arnaud Piéton outlined plans for Technip Energies to pursue an initial public offering and establish its ability to operate independently. The separation became effective in February 2021, and the spinoff was completed on 12 February 2021. Technip Energies and TechnipFMC thereafter had no capital ties, although they retained related industrial histories and overlapping knowledge of energy-sector projects. The new company inherited a major position in engineering and construction for LNG, gas processing, refining and petrochemicals. Its project portfolio includes design and delivery of liquefaction plants, LNG handling systems, refinery units and chemical facilities. LNG has remained its largest business area, while refining and petrochemicals have provided additional scale and recurring access to energy and industrial customers. Technip Energies' involvement in the Yamal LNG development in Russia illustrated the size and complexity of its traditional project work: the development was designed to export LNG to Asian markets through the Northeast Passage. The company's later history has been shaped by both geopolitical risk and energy transition. It was involved in the Arctic LNG 2 project, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine and subsequent European sanctions changed the project's commercial and legal environment. In March 2022, Technip Energies announced that it would not pursue new business opportunities in Russia. The European Union's sanctions later restricted the supply of goods and technologies required for gas liquefaction, placing the Arctic LNG 2 work on hold. In October 2022, Piéton announced an exit framework, and the company completed its exit on 27 July 2023. Reporting cited in the source material questioned whether the company remained involved too long after sanctions were imposed; Technip Energies maintained that it complied with applicable sanctions. At the same time, Technip Energies expanded its work in lower-carbon industries. In 2021, it supplied liquefied-carbon-dioxide marine loading arms for the Northern Lights project in Norway. In 2022, it won work for a carbon-capture-equipped waste-to-energy facility in Oslo and collaborated with sports company On on a shoe using carbon emissions as a primary raw material. It also formed NT ENERGIES with the UAE's National Petroleum Construction Co. to pursue decarbonization and blue- and green-hydrogen services in the Middle East and North Africa. In 2023, the company won Galp EPCM contracts for an advanced biofuels unit and a renewable-hydrogen electrolysis plant at the Sines refinery in Portugal. It also partnered with John Cockerill in the hydrogen venture Rely, worked with LanzaJet to expand sustainable aviation fuel using its Hummingbird technology, and established Reju for textile PET regeneration. These initiatives broadened the company's activities from conventional plant engineering into circular materials and clean-fuel technologies. The 2024–2025 period brought further large contracts. Technip Energies won work for ADNOC's Ruwais low-carbon LNG project, obtained approval to begin construction of the NZT Power carbon-capture gas plant in Teesside, and received a contract for a blue-ammonia facility in Louisiana. At its 2024 Capital Markets Day, it presented a 2025–2028 strategy centered on a large project pipeline, financial capacity and growth in the energy transition. By 2025, the company was described as operating in 34 countries with approximately 17,000 employees. It remained listed on Euronext Paris under the ticker TE and continued to combine LNG and process-engineering expertise with carbon capture, hydrogen, renewable fuels and low-carbon chemicals.

Controversies

  • 2023

Controversy over Arctic LNG 2 involvement

Reporting cited in the reference material alleged that Technip Energies remained involved in Russia's Arctic LNG 2 project after European sanctions had been imposed, potentially allowing it to avoid losses and contractual penalties. Technip Energies exited the project on 27 July 2023 and stated that it complied with all applicable sanctions. The controversy concerns the timing and nature of the withdrawal rather than a confirmed finding of unlawful conduct.
