Overview

Super RTL is a German free-to-air television network operated by SUPER RTL Fernsehen GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of RTL Deutschland. It is principally positioned as a children’s and family broadcaster, combining linear television with branded digital, audio and streaming services. Its broadcast day is divided into two principal programming environments: Toggo, which supplies children’s and preschool content during the daytime, and RTL Super, an evening and late-night schedule aimed at families and young adults. The service began broadcasting on 28 April 1995 as RTL Disney Fernsehen GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture between CLT, the Luxembourg-based company associated with RTL, and Disney’s international television interests. Its launch program was The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The partnership gave Super RTL access to Disney programming and helped establish the channel as a major destination for younger viewers in Germany. Following the consolidation of CLT and UFA television interests into CLT-UFA, the channel became part of the wider corporate structure that eventually developed into RTL Group and RTL Deutschland. Super RTL expanded beyond its core schedule by creating branded programming blocks and related services. The preschool block Toggolino was introduced in 2000, while Toggo became the umbrella identity for programming and activities aimed principally at children aged approximately six to thirteen in 2001. The brand supported television, websites, live events, licensing and music releases. A nationwide children’s roadshow, initially called the Fun & Action Tour and later the Toggo Tour, connected the channel with viewers outside the television screen. Super RTL also developed subscription video-on-demand through Kividoo, a time-shift channel called Toggo Plus, and the digital radio service Toggo Radio. Disney programming was gradually removed after the German free-to-air Disney Channel launched in January 2014. Super RTL responded by securing content agreements with Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution, Sony Pictures Television and DreamWorks Animation, while also adding more live-action series to its evening schedule. This transition reduced the channel’s dependence on Disney and broadened its programming supply across animation, family entertainment, drama and procedural series. RTL Group acquired Disney’s remaining interest in the venture in 2021, giving RTL full control of the channel for the first time. In 2023, the evening programming block formerly known as Super RTL Primetime was renamed RTL Super, although the main channel retained the Super RTL identity. In 2024, preschool content was brought under the broader Toggo brand as the Toggolino identity was discontinued. A proposed transaction involving Nickelodeon Germany and a new Toggo-branded network was blocked by Germany’s Federal Cartel Office in September 2024. Super RTL remains an active German television and children’s-media brand, with its business extending across linear broadcasting, digital video, radio, licensing and live experiences.

History

Super RTL was created during the expansion and international consolidation of commercial television in Germany. CLT, the Luxembourg-based company associated with RTL, formed a partnership with Disney’s international television interests, and the resulting RTL Disney Fernsehen GmbH & Co. KG launched Super RTL on 28 April 1995. The first program was The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Disney’s participation supplied recognizable family and children’s content, while the RTL connection provided a German commercial broadcasting platform. The channel became part of the broader RTL corporate structure as CLT and UFA’s television operations were consolidated during the late 1990s. In 1997, the completed formation of CLT-UFA brought Super RTL together with other German and European RTL-related services. Super RTL developed a strong focus on younger audiences and by 1998 was reported as the leading channel among viewers aged three to thirteen. In 1997, it launched a Germany-wide children’s roadshow, initially known as the Fun & Action Tour and subsequently renamed the Toggo Tour. The initiative used television characters and activities to build a direct relationship with children and families. The broadcaster expanded its commercial and digital activities in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It launched a website in 1999 and established a licensing agency. Preschool programming was organized under the Toggolino block from 2000, while the Toggo umbrella brand was introduced in 2001 for children aged roughly six to thirteen. Toggolino Club followed in 2002 as a paid preschool learning and entertainment service. The brand also entered music publishing through Toggo Music releases. Between 2001 and 2005, the channel carried Ravensburger TV, a programming strand supplied by RTV Family Entertainment. Super RTL received approval in 2005 for a proposed preschool pay-TV channel called Toggolino TV, but that service was never launched. The broadcaster continued to develop its education and digital portfolio, including the transfer of Bertelsmann’s Scoyo learning platform to Super RTL in 2009. It also expanded distribution through online television platforms, becoming available on Zattoo alongside other RTL channels in 2013. A major strategic transition occurred when Disney prepared the launch of a German free-to-air Disney Channel. Disney programming left Super RTL at the beginning of 2014. To replace the lost supply, Super RTL signed volume and library agreements with Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution, Sony Pictures Television and DreamWorks Animation. The DreamWorks arrangement also included programming from the Classic Media library. Super RTL complemented its children’s schedule with more evening drama and family-oriented live-action programming, including acquired series from ABC Family, ABC and Syfy. The company launched Kividoo, a subscription video-on-demand service, in April 2015. In 2016, it launched Toggo Plus, a time-shift service that retransmitted children’s programming one hour later. Toggo Radio followed in June 2020 as a digital and DAB+ service offering chart music, children’s songs and radio plays. These services extended the brand beyond linear television. RTL Group announced in March 2021 that it had acquired Disney’s remaining interest in the venture. This ended the original Disney-RTL ownership arrangement and placed Super RTL fully under the RTL corporate group. In 2023, the evening block was renamed RTL Super, although the Super RTL channel identity continued for the overall service. In 2024, the separate Toggolino label was retired in favor of using Toggo across children’s and preschool programming. A proposed partnership and acquisition involving Nickelodeon Germany was subsequently blocked by the German Federal Cartel Office. Super RTL remains active as a German broadcaster and multi-platform children’s-media brand.
