Overview

Sony Music Entertainment Japan, commonly called Sony Music Japan or SMEJ, is a Japanese entertainment company wholly owned by Sony Group Corporation. It is the principal Sony music business in Japan and operates with a degree of independence from the United States-based Sony Music Entertainment because of the scale, structure and particular characteristics of the Japanese market. The company combines recorded-music operations with artist representation, music publishing, physical and digital distribution, merchandise, live events, anime, games and other forms of intellectual-property exploitation. SMEJ began in March 1968 as CBS/Sony Records, a 50/50 joint venture between Sony and the Columbia Broadcasting System. The venture was created to distribute CBS music in Japan while building a domestic recording and artist-development operation. Sony co-founder Akio Morita became its first president, and Norio Ohga, a musician and later a major Sony executive, became president and representative director in 1970. The company was renamed CBS/Sony Group in 1983. In January 1988, Sony acquired CBS Records Group and the remaining half of the Japanese joint venture. Following a group reorganization, the business adopted the name Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), Inc. in March 1988. The company’s core recorded-music activities are organized through Sony Music Labels, which manages a broad portfolio of imprints serving mainstream pop, rock, dance, hip-hop, classical, catalogue and anime-related music. Important labels and units have included Sony Records, Epic Records Japan, Ki/oon Music, SME Records, Ariola Japan, Sony Music Associated Records, Sony Music Direct and Sacra Music. SMEJ has also developed substantial artist-management capabilities through Sony Music Artists and MusicRay'n, the latter specializing in voice actors and music-related talent. Anime and character entertainment are central to the group’s strategy. Aniplex, established in 1995 and made a wholly owned Sony Music Japan subsidiary in 2001, produces, distributes and licenses animation and related media. Its work on major anime properties has helped connect SMEJ’s recording artists with television, film, streaming, stage and game audiences. The creation of Sacra Music in 2017 gave the group a dedicated label for artists prominent in the anisong, or anime-song, market. This model uses anime’s international reach as a route for Japanese performers and songs to reach audiences outside Japan. Sony Music Solutions provides infrastructure and commercial services across the group. Its activities include manufacturing, packaging, physical distribution, merchandise, event planning, exhibitions, fan clubs, digital services and support for live entertainment. The group has also pursued adjacent intellectual-property and character businesses, including Sony Creative Products’ investment in the Peanuts franchise. SMEJ has a long, discontinuous history in video games. CBS/Sony and Epic/Sony released games for Japanese platforms during the 1980s and early 1990s, before Sony Computer Entertainment’s formation shifted much of Sony’s console publishing activity elsewhere. In 2017, SMEJ launched Unties as a label for independent games on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC and virtual-reality platforms. Unties was removed from the Sony group in 2019 and continued as Phoenixx. Overall, Sony Music Entertainment Japan remains a diversified Japanese entertainment group whose business extends beyond recordings into anime, live experiences, talent, games, licensing and fan commerce.

History

Sony Music Entertainment Japan originated in the expansion of American record companies into Japan during the 1960s. In 1967, Columbia Records International president Harvey Schein proposed a joint venture with Sony. The resulting company was incorporated in Tokyo in March 1968 as CBS/Sony Records, jointly owned by Sony and CBS. Akio Morita became president, while Norio Ohga joined the leadership and became president and representative director in 1970. The venture initially distributed CBS releases but quickly developed its own domestic recording, marketing and artist-development capabilities. The company was renamed CBS/Sony Group in 1983. Sony’s acquisition of CBS Records Group in January 1988 gave Sony full control of the Japanese business. In March of that year, several wholly owned subsidiaries were consolidated and the company became Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), Inc. The business was briefly listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the early 1990s; its shares began trading in November 1991. During this period, leadership changed from Toshio Ozawa to Shugo Matsuo, Ryokichi Kunugi and Shigeo Maruyama. The corporate logo changed in 1998 from the historic Walking Eye design to the modern Sony Music identity. SMEJ expanded beyond recordings through labels, artist agencies, publishing, video and live activities. Its historical labels included Epic/Sony, Ki/oon, Sony Records, SME Records, Sony Music Associated Records and later Ariola Japan. Competition intensified during the 1990s, particularly from Avex. SMEJ experienced declining sales and market share in the fiscal year ending March 1997, and Dreams Come True, one of its most successful acts, subsequently signed with Virgin Records America. The company later regained a leading position in Japan, although market competition remained strong. Animation became a major pillar of the group. Aniplex was established in 1995 and became wholly owned by Sony Music Japan in 2001. It developed an integrated role in animation production, distribution, licensing, stage works and games. Anime tie-ins became a significant discovery and internationalization route for Sony-affiliated musicians. Sacra Music, launched in 2017, formalized the focus on anime-song artists such as LiSA and Aimer. SMEJ also developed service infrastructure through Sony Music Solutions, which handles distribution, physical products, merchandise, events, exhibitions, fan clubs and related digital services. Sony Music Artists and MusicRay'n broadened the group’s talent-management reach into musicians, actors, voice actors and other performers. In 2017, SMEJ created Unties to publish independent games across multiple platforms. The label released and announced a range of Japanese and international indie titles before leaving the Sony group in 2019 and becoming Phoenixx. More recently, the group has continued to expand its intellectual-property and entertainment portfolio. Sony Creative Products acquired a 39 percent interest in Peanuts in 2018. Sony Music Labels acquired rights to the Spookiz franchise in 2025, according to the cited reference material. The same material reports a planned 2026 joint venture with Universal Music Japan, Nine by Nine, intended to operate music festivals in Asia. These developments illustrate SMEJ’s continuing evolution from a record company into a broad entertainment and rights-management business.
