Overview

Shoppers Drug Mart is one of Canada's largest pharmacy-led retail chains. Founded by pharmacist Murray Koffler in 1962, it developed from a Toronto pharmacy business into a national network built around franchised or associate-operated pharmacies, professional dispensing services and a broad front-of-store assortment. The chain operates as Shoppers Drug Mart in most of Canada and as Pharmaprix in Quebec. Koffler inherited two pharmacies from his father and expanded the business through acquisitions and a distinctive operating model in which pharmacist associates owned and managed individual stores within the wider system. He also modernized the Canadian drugstore format by giving greater prominence to the dispensary and pharmacist professionalism, while reducing the importance of traditional soda-fountain retailing. The company expanded rapidly through mergers and acquisitions, including Plaza Drugstores in Ontario, Cunningham Drug Stores in western Canada, Lord's Supervalue Pharmacies in Atlantic Canada and several regional chains during the 1980s and 1990s. The Pharmaprix business was created in Quebec in 1972 through a partnership between Koffler and Steinberg. Koffler acquired Steinberg's interest in 1979, giving Shoppers control of the Quebec operation. In 1986, Koffler sold Shoppers Drug Mart to Imasco Limited and retired from the business. Under CEO David Bloom, the chain continued to expand, increased the scale of its store network and developed the Shoppers Optimum loyalty program, launched in 2000. Shoppers became an independent company after its separation from Imasco in 2000 and was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2001. During the 2000s, Shoppers introduced larger store formats with expanded cosmetics, food and convenience areas. The company increasingly sought revenue beyond prescription dispensing, adding beauty products, seasonal merchandise, household goods, snacks and other everyday items. Its private-label portfolio included Life Brand and Quo, while selected stores also carried broader grocery assortments. Shoppers opened its 1,000th store in Toronto in 2007 and later grew to more than 1,300 locations across Canada's ten provinces and two territories. Loblaw Companies announced an agreement to acquire Shoppers Drug Mart in 2013. The transaction, valued at approximately C$12.4 billion in cash and stock, received regulatory approval in March 2014 and closed later that month. Shoppers retained its consumer-facing identity while becoming part of Loblaw's retail and healthcare portfolio. Following the acquisition, Loblaw expanded the presence of President's Choice and No Name products in Shoppers stores, while Life Brand products became more widely available through Loblaw grocery stores. The former Shoppers Optimum program was combined with Loblaw's PC Plus program in 2018 to create PC Optimum. In addition to conventional stores, the business has operated specialty healthcare activities. Shoppers Drug Mart Specialty Health Network provides specialty-drug distribution and patient-support services, while MediSystem Technologies supplies pharmaceutical products and clinical services to long-term-care and retirement facilities. The Wellwise concept, launched in Toronto in 2017 and extended online in 2018, focused on healthy-living and accessibility products for older adults; the business was sold to Verillium Health Care in early 2025. Shoppers also operates beauty e-commerce through Beauty Boutique and offers services such as prescription delivery at many locations. Today, Shoppers Drug Mart remains a Canada-focused pharmacy and convenience retailer within Loblaw. Its positioning combines accessible community pharmacy care with beauty, wellness, food and everyday shopping. The chain participates in Canada's PC Optimum loyalty ecosystem and in the Retail Council of Canada's voluntary Scanner Price Accuracy Code. Its business has also attracted scrutiny, including criticism in 2024 over alleged pharmac…

History

Shoppers Drug Mart traces its origins to the Koffler family pharmacy business in Toronto. Murray Koffler inherited two pharmacies from his father, Leon Koffler, and expanded the operation through additional openings and acquisitions. By the early 1960s, the business had grown to 17 pharmacies. Koffler renamed the chain Shoppers Drug Mart during the 1970s, taking the name from the Shoppers World Danforth shopping centre, where an early location operated. Koffler's retail model emphasized the pharmacy as the central service rather than the soda fountain and general merchandise traditions associated with older drugstores. Pharmacists were presented as healthcare professionals, and the company developed a system of pharmacist associates who operated stores within the chain and shared in their performance. This model supported expansion while preserving a degree of local pharmacy ownership and management. The chain grew through a sequence of regional acquisitions. In 1968 it expanded substantially in Ontario through a merger with Plaza Drugstores. In 1971 it acquired Cunningham Drug Stores in British Columbia and Alberta. The Quebec operation began in 1972 as Pharmaprix, initially a joint venture with Steinberg; Koffler acquired full control in 1979. Lord's Supervalue Pharmacies added stores in Atlantic Canada in 1974. Further expansion included Super X Drugstores and J.W. Crooks Pharmacy stores in Ontario in 1986, Pinder's Drugs in western Canada in 1992, Bi-Rite Drug Stores in 1995 and Big V Drugstores later that year. Shoppers Home Health Care opened its first store in 1996. Koffler sold the company to Imasco Limited in 1986. David Bloom, a former Shoppers pharmacist, became chief executive and led the company through a long period of growth, retiring in 2001 after 35 years with the organization. During his tenure the store network expanded substantially, the company broadened its non-prescription assortment and Shoppers Optimum was introduced in 2000. After Imasco's change in ownership, Shoppers was sold in 2000 to a consortium of institutional investors and management, becoming independent. It became a publicly traded corporation on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2001. The company introduced larger-format stores in 2002. These locations generally devoted more space to cosmetics and front-of-store merchandise while retaining a pharmacy at the rear. The format supported a strategy of reducing dependence on prescription sales and increasing food, beauty and convenience purchases. The 1,000th Shoppers store opened in Toronto in April 2007. Loblaw Companies announced its acquisition of Shoppers in July 2013. The Competition Bureau approved the transaction in March 2014, and completion followed on March 28. Shoppers continued to operate under its own banners, including Pharmaprix in Quebec, but became part of Loblaw's wider retail network. The integration brought President's Choice and No Name goods into selected Shoppers stores and expanded distribution of Life Brand products through Loblaw supermarkets. The post-acquisition period included new formats and services. A flagship Toronto store opened at Yonge-Dundas Square in 2018. Wellwise began as a Toronto store in 2017 and developed an online channel in 2018 for products aimed at healthy living and older consumers. Shoppers also expanded specialty healthcare, delivery and digital beauty services. In 2018, Shoppers Optimum and PC Plus were merged into PC Optimum. In 2024, the company faced public and legal criticism concerning alleged MedsCheck quotas in Ontario. In early 2025, Wellwise was sold to Verillium Health Care. Shoppers remains an active, Canada-wide pharmacy and retail business owned by Loblaw.
