Overview

Scuderia Toro Rosso was an Italian Formula One constructor and racing brand controlled by Red Bull GmbH. It was created when Red Bull purchased the Minardi team at the end of the 2005 season and renamed it Toro Rosso, the Italian translation of “Red Bull.” The team retained Minardi’s Faenza, Italy base and inherited its long-standing identity as an Italian entrant, while becoming part of Red Bull’s two-team Formula One structure alongside Red Bull Racing. Toro Rosso’s principal sporting purpose was to identify and develop young drivers for promotion to the senior Red Bull Racing team. This role made it an important part of the Red Bull Junior Team system. Drivers such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr. passed through the organization, although not all of them were promoted directly or immediately. The team also provided an environment in which inexperienced drivers could gain Formula One race experience. The constructor initially operated with substantial technical links to Red Bull Racing. Its 2006 car was derived from the previous Red Bull chassis, while the team used a Cosworth V10 engine under a regulatory concession originally associated with Minardi’s financial circumstances. From 2007 through 2013 it used Ferrari V8 engines, generally in an older customer specification. It then moved to Renault power in 2014, returned to Ferrari engines for 2016, switched back to Renault in 2017, and adopted Honda engines in 2018 and 2019. Toro Rosso achieved its defining sporting success at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel took pole position and won in wet conditions, delivering the team’s only Formula One victory and only pole position under the Toro Rosso name. The result also made Vettel the youngest race winner at that time and represented an exceptional achievement for a junior constructor. In the 2008 season the team finished ahead of Red Bull Racing in the constructors’ championship, the only season in which it did so. The team’s name and business purpose changed at the end of 2019. Red Bull renamed it Scuderia AlphaTauri for the 2020 season to promote the group’s AlphaTauri fashion label. The Formula One operation continued in Faenza, but Scuderia Toro Rosso ceased to be the team’s competition identity. Its legacy therefore combines Minardi’s Italian base, Red Bull’s driver-development strategy, and the breakthrough victory that established the team as more than a conventional satellite entrant.

History

Scuderia Toro Rosso originated in Minardi, the small Italian constructor that competed in Formula One from 1985 through 2005. Although Minardi had a loyal following and a permanent base in Faenza, it rarely had the resources to fight at the front and never achieved a podium finish. Owner Paul Stoddart eventually sold the operation to Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz, who wanted a second Formula One team to complement Red Bull Racing. Red Bull took control on 1 November 2005 and replaced the Minardi name with Scuderia Toro Rosso. The new title used Italian wording to preserve the team’s national character while reflecting Red Bull ownership. The arrangement also maintained the Faenza headquarters. Before the first season, Mateschitz agreed to share ownership equally with former Formula One driver Gerhard Berger. That partnership ended in late 2008, when Red Bull repurchased Berger’s interest. The constructor made its competitive debut in 2006. Its first car was a modified version of the previous Red Bull Racing chassis, a choice that generated objections from rival teams over the Formula One requirement that constructors design their own cars. Toro Rosso also used a restricted Cosworth V10 engine inherited from Minardi’s earlier supply arrangement. Other teams argued that the concession gave the newly financed operation an advantage, while Toro Rosso maintained that the technical rights had originated with Jaguar Racing and had passed through Red Bull’s acquisition chain. From 2007 to 2013 the team used Ferrari V8 engines. Its early results were inconsistent, but Sebastian Vettel’s arrival during the 2007 season helped change its trajectory. In 2008 Vettel and Sébastien Bourdais drove for the team, which improved steadily during the year. Vettel’s pole and victory at Monza in September became the defining event in Toro Rosso history. The result was particularly notable because it came at the team’s home race and because Toro Rosso finished the season ahead of its senior Red Bull counterpart in the constructors’ standings. Vettel moved to Red Bull Racing for 2009. Toro Rosso replaced him with Sébastien Buemi and later replaced Bourdais with Jaime Alguersuari. The team’s performance fell back, and it finished last in the 2009 championship. Buemi and Alguersuari remained together in 2010 and 2011. The team continued to rotate young talent, with Daniel Ricciardo serving as reserve and test driver before moving into a race seat and eventually becoming a Red Bull Racing driver. The team used Renault power in 2014 and returned to Ferrari engines in 2016. It switched back to Renault for 2017 and then adopted Honda engines for 2018 and 2019, aligning its power-unit relationship with Red Bull Racing. Max Verstappen made his Formula One debut for Toro Rosso at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix at the age of 17 years and 166 days, establishing a record for the youngest driver to start a Formula One race at that time. At the end of 2019 Red Bull retired the Toro Rosso identity and renamed the constructor Scuderia AlphaTauri. The rebranding promoted the group’s fashion label while preserving the Faenza-based Formula One operation. Toro Rosso therefore ended as a distinct brand after fourteen seasons, but its facilities, personnel continuity and sporting role carried into AlphaTauri.
