Saku Brewery

Saku Brewery, legally operating as Saku Õlletehase AS, is an Estonian producer and distributor of beer and a broad range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Its origins reach back to 1820, when Count Karl Friedrich von Rehbinder established a brewery at Saku Manor. The operation expanded substantially after the manor passed to the Baggo family in 1849. A steam-powered industrial brewery was built in the 1870s, and the first wort was produced at the new facility on 4 October 1877. In 1899 the business was incorporated as Saku Õlletehase Aktsiaselts, while a narrow-gauge railway connected the brewery with Tallinn and enabled its first recorded rail shipment of beer to the capital. Production was interrupted during the First World War and resumed in 1921. During the Soviet period the brewery underwent further institutional and technical changes. It was designated an experimental brewery in 1976, and modernization investments began, although the program was disrupted by the Soviet anti-alcohol campaign introduced in 1985. Following the restoration of Estonian independence, the state-owned Saku Tehased entered a joint-venture arrangement with Swedish-linked Baltic Beverages Holding in 1991. The shareholders were Saku Tehased, Hartwall and Procordia. The company was reorganized as the public limited company Saku Õlletehas in 1995, followed by a public offering of shares during Estonia’s privatization process. Saku shares began trading on the Tallinn Stock Exchange in 1998. The company later became part of Carlsberg’s Baltic brewing structure, and Carlsberg A/S became its sole owner in 2008. The shares were removed from the exchange on 19 September 2008, making Saku a private wholly owned subsidiary rather than a listed Estonian company. Since late 2016, its operations have been managed within a Baltic regional framework. The company’s domestic beer portfolio includes Saku Originaal, Karl Friedrich, Saku Rock and Saku On Ice, alongside other Saku-branded and seasonal products. It also produces or sells cider, premixed alcoholic drinks, kvass, mead-style fermented beverages, non-alcoholic beer and other alcohol-free drinks. Through its relationship with Carlsberg Group, Saku distributes international brands in Estonia, including Carlsberg, Tuborg, Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc and Grimbergen. Its wider beverage range includes Somersby cider, Vichy water and flavored water products, Battery energy drinks, Super Manki soft drinks, and selected products associated with Sinebrychoff, KOFF and Seth&Riley’s Garage. Estonia remains the company’s central market, but Saku also exports around the Baltic Sea and to European and more distant markets. Export destinations mentioned by the company include Poland, Germany, Spain, Finland, Iceland, the United Arab Emirates, China and Australia; Malta, Romania and Japan were added to the reported market network in 2024. In 2023, exports reached approximately 35 million litres. Saku combines its historical brewery identity with the distribution capabilities of Carlsberg Group, positioning itself as a major Estonian beverage producer with regional reach. Sustainability activity has included a hybrid vehicle fleet introduced in 2021, recycled-material film for selected can multipacks, rooftop solar generation and a carbon-dioxide capture and recovery system. The business also supports Estonian sports, music, film and community organizations, including basketball, tennis, volleyball, skiing, Rally Estonia, Apollo cinema, the Black Nights Film Festival and cultural and civic initiatives in Saku Municipality.

Saku Brewery traces its institutional and commercial history to Saku Manor in Estonia. In 1820, Count Karl Friedrich von Rehbinder established a brewery at the manor. Brewing expanded after the Baggo family acquired the manor in 1849, with the new owners associated with significant technical development. In 1876, Valerian Baggo established a steam-powered plant to replace the earlier manor-based operation. The first wort at that facility was produced on 4 October 1877, marking the transition toward industrial-scale brewing. The enterprise was incorporated in 1899 as Saku Õlletehase Aktsiaselts. That same year a narrow-gauge railway was constructed between the brewery and Tallinn. The first recorded rail delivery of Saku beer reached Tallinn on 28 September 1899, replacing the slower horse-drawn transport previously used for distribution. Production was suspended during the First World War, along with activity at other Estonian breweries, and resumed in 1921. During the Soviet era, Saku’s organizational status and production role changed repeatedly. In 1976 it became an experimental brewery, and renovation and modernization investments were initiated. These efforts were affected by the Soviet Union’s anti-alcohol campaign and associated restrictions beginning in 1985. After Estonia restored independence, the government authorized a new ownership and operating structure on 12 July 1991. State-owned Saku Tehased entered a joint beer-production venture with Hartwall and Procordia, each holding a defined share in the venture’s capital structure. At a shareholders’ meeting on 16 February 1995, the company was reorganized as the public limited company Saku Õlletehas. On 10 April 1995 it offered 1.6 million shares, equal to 20 percent of the share capital, as part of Estonia’s privatization process. The shares were subsequently listed on the Tallinn Stock Exchange in 1998, initially trading over the counter and later on the exchange’s Main List. Carlsberg Group gradually became the brewery’s controlling owner. In 2008 Carlsberg A/S acquired full ownership, and Saku’s shares were last listed on the Tallinn Stock Exchange on 19 September of that year. The company has since operated as a private Carlsberg subsidiary. From late 2016, its operations were led within a Baltic regional management structure. Saku’s business combines manufacturing, brand management and distribution. Its domestic beer range includes Saku Originaal, Karl Friedrich, Saku Rock and Saku On Ice. The company also handles products from other Carlsberg businesses, distributing brands such as Carlsberg, Tuborg, Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc and Grimbergen in Estonia. Its broader portfolio covers cider, premixed alcoholic drinks, kvass, fermented beverages, alcohol-free products, water, flavored beverages, energy drinks and soft drinks. The brewery exports around the Baltic Sea, to major European markets and to selected destinations farther abroad. Reported export markets include Poland, Germany, Spain, Finland, Iceland, Cyprus, Greece, Slovakia, the United Arab Emirates, China and Australia, with Malta, Romania and Japan added in 2024. In 2023, reported exports reached approximately 35 million litres. Saku also participates in Carlsberg’s environmental program.
