Overview
Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD is a five-star hotel on Jalan M.H. Thamrin in Central Jakarta, Indonesia. The property forms part of the Wisma Nusantara complex and is one of four hotels located around the Selamat Datang Monument, a prominent landmark at the center of Jakarta's principal business and diplomatic corridor. Its history is closely connected with Indonesia's post-independence modernization and with the country's longstanding economic relationship with Japan. The hotel opened on 2 December 1972 as the President Hotel, alongside the 30-story Wisma Nusantara office tower. The tower was conceived during the presidency of Sukarno and was later completed through cooperation between the Indonesian government and Mitsui. The hotel was designed to serve international visitors, particularly Japanese business travelers, and was initially managed by Japan Airlines Development, a Japan Airlines subsidiary that later became associated with the Nikko Hotels group. At opening, ownership was divided among the Indonesian government, Mitsui, and Japan Airlines. The property underwent a major refurbishment from 1987 to 1991. The work modernized guest rooms, restaurants, and the convention hall, while reducing the room count from 354 to 315. In 1992, Indocement acquired a substantial stake in the hotel. Following political and economic changes after the end of Indonesia's New Order period, the Indonesian government and Indocement sold their holdings to Guthrie GTS, a Singapore-based property company, while Mitsui retained a minority interest in PT Wisma Nusantara International, the hotel's owning company. A major expansion was completed in March 2003. The 14-story addition, built north of the original structure, was designed by Kenzo Tange & Associates and constructed by PP Taisei and Total Bangun Persada. It increased the property's capacity to 427 rooms, and the hotel adopted the name Hotel Nikko Jakarta. The original 1972 building is now known as the Main Tower, while the later addition is referred to as the Pullman Tower. The hotel ended its nearly three-decade relationship with Nikko Hotels on 19 January 2012. Accor was appointed to manage the property under the Pullman Hotels and Resorts brand, leading to the current name, Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD. A further renovation, carried out with Singapore-based architecture firm Wilson & Associates, was completed on 13 February 2014. The current property contains 427 rooms distributed between the Main Tower and Pullman Tower. Accommodation categories range from Superior rooms to Accent Suites; the Grand Deluxe and Executive rooms are located in the Pullman Tower. Its facilities include four dining venues—Kahyangan Restaurant, Le Chocolat, Sana Sini Restaurant, and The Back Room—as well as a swimming pool, fitness center, spa, and 19 meeting rooms. The hotel's positioning combines full-service business hospitality, convention capacity, central Jakarta access, and the heritage of one of the city's earliest major international hotels.
History
The origins of Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD lie in the development of Wisma Nusantara, one of Jakarta's earliest major post-independence commercial landmarks. President Sukarno initiated the tower's design in 1964, but construction was interrupted by the severe hyperinflation affecting Indonesia. Work resumed in 1969 after the government under President Suharto reached an arrangement with Mitsui. The project was expanded to include a star-rated hotel intended in part for Japanese business visitors to Jakarta. Construction of the hotel and tower began in April 1970. Kajima, Taisei Corporation, and Total Bangun Persada were involved as contractors, and the reported project budget was Rp11.5 billion. The 30-story Wisma Nusantara complex and its hotel were completed in November 1972. President Suharto and Jakarta Governor Ali Sadikin inaugurated the hotel on 2 December 1972 under the name President Hotel. Operational management was assigned to Japan Airlines Development, Ltd., a subsidiary of Japan Airlines that later became connected with the Nikko Hotels identity. The initial ownership structure gave the Indonesian government a 55 percent stake, while Mitsui and Japan Airlines held 40 percent and 5 percent respectively. The property became associated with Jakarta's international business district and its central location near the Selamat Datang Monument. In May 1986, it was targeted during an attack attributed to the Japanese Red Army, which also targeted the United States and Japanese embassies in Jakarta. The devices placed at the hotel did not detonate, and no casualties were reported. The alleged attack organizer, Tsutomu Shirosaki, was subsequently captured by the United States and sentenced in 1998. From July 1987 through July 1991, the President Hotel underwent a substantial renovation. The project refreshed guest rooms, restaurants, and the convention hall, and reduced the number of rooms from 354 to 315. The completed work was inaugurated by Vice President Soedharmono on 26 July 1991. In October 1992, Indocement acquired a 31 percent interest in the hotel. After the fall of the New Order regime, the Indonesian government and Indocement disposed of their holdings in favor of Guthrie GTS, a Singapore-based property company. Mitsui maintained a minority interest in PT Wisma Nusantara International, the entity that owns the property. A second major phase of physical development took place in the early 2000s. In March 2003, a 14-story extension was completed on the north side of the original building. PP Taisei and Total Bangun Persada constructed the addition, while Kenzo Tange & Associates provided the design. The new building increased hotel capacity to 427 rooms. At the same time, the property was renamed Hotel Nikko Jakarta, reflecting its operating relationship with Nikko Hotels. That relationship ended on 19 January 2012 after almost 30 years. Accor was invited to manage the hotel as part of its Pullman Hotels and Resorts portfolio, and the property adopted the name Pullman Jakarta Indonesia Thamrin CBD. The Pullman-era repositioning included a further renovation by Wilson & Associates, an architecture firm based in Singapore. The work was completed on 13 February 2014. The hotel now operates from two connected historical phases: the Main Tower, corresponding to the original 1972 building, and the Pullman Tower, corresponding to the 2003 extension. Its 427 rooms range from Superior rooms to Accent Suites, with Grand Deluxe and Executive rooms located in the newer tower. The property also offers four named dining venues, a swimming pool, fitness center, spa, and 19 meeting rooms. Its current identity therefore rests on a combination of international Pullman management, central Jakarta accessibility, business-event capacity, and continuity with the President Hotel and Hotel Nikko Jakarta eras.
