Overview
PTT (Turkey) is the postal and telegraph service provider in Turkey, offering mail, parcel, and money transfer services.
History
Swiss postal administration developed as a federal public function during the nineteenth century. The federal postal system established in 1849 created a nationwide framework for collecting, transporting and delivering mail across the Swiss Confederation. Telegraph and telephone responsibilities were subsequently added as communications technologies developed. These functions were eventually brought together in the PTT enterprise, whose name stood for Post, Telegraph and Telephone. The combined PTT organization was formally established in 1928. For the following decades it served as Switzerland’s integrated public provider for postal and telecommunications services. Its responsibilities extended beyond conventional mail delivery. PTT operated post offices, letter and parcel networks, postal transport, telegraph facilities and telephone infrastructure. It also supported payment and savings services associated with the postal network. The organization’s presence in smaller communities and difficult geographic areas made it an important element of Swiss territorial cohesion and universal access to essential services. PTT’s operating environment changed substantially after the 1970s and especially during the 1980s and 1990s. Telecommunications technology evolved quickly, customers gained access to new forms of communication and governments across Europe reconsidered the role of state monopolies. The growth of competition in telecommunications placed pressure on the combined model, while postal operations had to respond to automation, changing volumes and the long-term shift from physical correspondence toward electronic communication. Switzerland reorganized the federal enterprise at the end of the twentieth century. In 1998, PTT was separated into two successor organizations: Swiss Post, responsible for postal and related services, and Swisscom, responsible for telecommunications. This division ended PTT as a standalone operating enterprise. Swiss Post continued the postal-service tradition under a distinct corporate identity, while Swisscom developed as a separate telecommunications company. The PTT name is consequently historical. It can describe the former combined Swiss postal and telecommunications administration, but it should not be treated as an independently operating current brand. Its postal legacy is carried principally by Swiss Post, which remains owned by the Swiss Confederation and continues to operate a nationwide network of physical and digital services. Its telecommunications legacy is associated with Swisscom. The transition from PTT to the two successor organizations illustrates the broader separation of postal and telecommunications functions as both sectors became more specialized and commercially competitive.

Products and positioning
A nationwide public-service infrastructure provider and historical Swiss federal monopoly spanning postal delivery and telecommunications.
Postal services
Letter mail
PTT’s postal business collected, sorted, transported and delivered domestic and international letters through a nationwide post-office and distribution network. Letter mail was one of the organization’s core universal-service responsibilities and connected households, businesses and public institutions across Switzerland.
Logistics
Parcel delivery
The PTT postal network handled parcel acceptance, transport and delivery for private and commercial customers. Parcel operations formed part of the logistics base later carried forward and developed by Swiss Post.
Telecommunications
Telegraph services
Telegraph services were among the communications functions administered within the PTT system. They enabled the transmission of written messages over the national communications network before newer electronic communications technologies displaced most traditional telegram use.
Telecommunications
Telephone services
PTT operated Switzerland’s public telephone infrastructure, including fixed-line connections and associated network services. This telecommunications activity was transferred to Swisscom when the PTT enterprise was divided in 1998.
Financial services
Postal financial services
The postal system also supported payment and savings-related services delivered through post offices. These activities formed part of the historical postal-service model and contributed to the broader financial-services business later associated with PostFinance.
