Overview

The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the gaming division of Sony Group Corporation. Released in November 2020, it is the successor to the PlayStation 4 and the flagship hardware of the PlayStation brand, one of the best-known names in interactive entertainment. The console launched in two models: a standard edition with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and a lower-priced Digital Edition without a disc drive, both built around custom AMD silicon combining an eight-core Zen 2 CPU and a RDNA 2-based GPU. The PS5's defining features are its ultra-high-speed custom SSD, which dramatically shortens load times and enables new streaming-based game design; the DualSense wireless controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers; support for 4K resolution, high frame rates and ray tracing; and 3D audio. Sony positioned the machine as a premium, technology-forward platform for both blockbuster first-party exclusives and third-party titles. The PlayStation brand is owned and operated by Sony Interactive Entertainment, headquartered in Tokyo with major operations in the United States and worldwide. The PS5 is sold through major retailers and Sony's own PlayStation Direct store, and its revenue model combines hardware sales with PlayStation Plus subscription services, digital game and add-on sales through the PlayStation Store, and accessories. Sony has repeatedly described the PS5 as one of the fastest-selling PlayStation consoles, supported by a deep pipeline of first-party studios such as Insomniac Games, Santa Monica Studio, Guerrilla Games and Naughty Dog. As a product brand, the PS5 anchors the current PlayStation ecosystem, which also includes PlayStation VR2, the PlayStation Plus service tiers, and cross-generation support for many PS4 titles. Its competitive positioning is against Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S and, increasingly, against PC gaming and cloud streaming services. The brand's marketing leans on exclusive franchises, technical performance and a premium gamer identity.

History

The PlayStation 5 was developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment as the successor to the PlayStation 4, which had launched in 2013. Sony began publicly discussing the next-generation console in 2019, confirming key technical details such as the custom SSD and the AMD-based architecture. The console was released in November 2020 in two configurations: a standard model with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray drive and a Digital Edition without one. Launch supply was constrained by global semiconductor shortages and pandemic-related logistics issues, and PS5 units were difficult to find at retail for an extended period. Despite this, Sony reported strong demand and the platform became a central part of its gaming strategy. The PS5 introduced the DualSense controller, whose haptic feedback and adaptive triggers became a signature feature, and its SSD enabled near-instant loading and new gameplay mechanics. Sony expanded the ecosystem over time with PlayStation VR2, launched in 2023, and a revised, slimmer PS5 model. The PlayStation Plus service was restructured into tiered plans, and Sony pursued a mix of first-party exclusives and third-party partnerships. The brand competes primarily with Microsoft's Xbox Series X|S and with the broader PC and cloud gaming markets. As of the mid-2020s the PS5 remains the flagship of the PlayStation hardware line.
