History
NVIDIA was established on April 5, 1993, by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. The founders believed that specialized three-dimensional graphics processing could address computational problems that general-purpose processors handled inefficiently, while video games could provide a large commercial market. The company began in Silicon Valley with a small amount of founder capital and later obtained venture funding. Its first graphics product, NV1, used quadrilateral primitives and failed to achieve broad market traction after Microsoft DirectX standardized on triangles. NVIDIA survived the setback by developing new architectures and concentrating on compatible, high-performance 3D graphics. The generative-AI expansion of the 2020s made NVIDIA's data-center GPUs, networking products and software central to many AI infrastructure deployments. The Hopper generation included the H100 and H200 accelerators. In 2024, NVIDIA announced Blackwell, a platform combining GPU, interconnect, networking and software capabilities for large-model training and inference. Blackwell was later extended to consumer PCs through GeForce RTX 50 products. NVIDIA continues to develop accelerated-computing platforms for cloud providers, enterprises, laboratories, supercomputers, vehicles, robots and other physical-AI applications.
