Overview
Nixxes Software B.V. is a Dutch video-game development studio headquartered in Utrecht. The company was established in 1999 by Jurjen Katsman, a computer-science student and demoscene developer whose nickname, “nix,” supplied the basis for the studio’s name. Its first assignment was a Dreamcast conversion of Crystal Dynamics’ Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, a project Katsman initially completed alone. That early specialization in adapting technically demanding games between platforms became the foundation of Nixxes’ identity. The studio’s origins were closely connected to Eidos Interactive and Crystal Dynamics. In the mid-1990s, Katsman was recruited by developers working with Eidos and moved to London. After Eidos acquired Crystal Dynamics in 1998, he worked with the latter studio in the United States. When Crystal Dynamics needed a developer to convert Soul Reaver for Sega’s Dreamcast, Katsman was asked to create a company capable of delivering the work. Nixxes subsequently developed expertise in engineering, optimization, tools, technical art, and platform adaptation rather than operating primarily as a conventional original-IP publisher. Nixxes gradually expanded from a one-person operation into a co-development studio. It contributed to projects associated with Crystal Dynamics and other major publishers, including work on the 2013 release of Thief, when the company had seventeen employees. In 2018, Nixxes moved into the World Trade Center in Utrecht. By 2020, approximately 40 percent of its work consisted of game ports, while the rest involved co-development activities such as producing art assets and supporting broader game-production pipelines. The COVID-19 pandemic created operational difficulties because development depended on office-based hardware and high-speed access to studio servers. Despite those constraints, Nixxes continued working with external partners. One prominent collaboration was its assistance to Guerrilla Games on patches and technical support for the Windows release of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition during 2020 and 2021. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the acquisition of Nixxes on 1 July 2021. The transaction terms were not disclosed. Nixxes became part of PlayStation Studios, with Sony describing the acquisition as a way to strengthen its ability to bring PlayStation games to personal computers. The studio’s role within Sony has centered on technical adaptation and co-development rather than a publicly identified standalone franchise. In June 2022, Nixxes’ first separately revealed project as a PlayStation Studios subsidiary was announced as the PC versions of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, developed in collaboration with sister studio Insomniac Games. In 2023, Nixxes said it would take on more remaster work while continuing to support PC ports. Its positioning therefore combines specialist porting knowledge with broader production support for large-scale console and PC games.
History
Nixxes Software was founded in the Netherlands in 1999 by Jurjen Katsman. Before establishing the studio, Katsman was a computer-science student, gamer, and demoscene developer. During the 1990s he was unexpectedly introduced to Dutch developers working with Eidos Interactive and accepted a position with the publisher, moving to London and leaving his studies. He later transferred to Crystal Dynamics in the United States after Eidos acquired that company in 1998. Crystal Dynamics was developing Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and needed a specialist to adapt the game for Sega’s Dreamcast. Katsman returned to the Netherlands after spending time in the United States and was asked to establish a company for the conversion. He founded Nixxes, naming it after his demoscene nickname, “nix.” The Dreamcast version of Soul Reaver became the studio’s first project and was initially completed by Katsman alone. The company subsequently developed a business around platform conversions and external co-development. Rather than focusing mainly on publishing its own original games, Nixxes supplied engineering and production expertise to larger game makers. Its work included porting, optimization, technical support, and the creation of art assets. By the time it was working on Thief in 2013, the studio employed seventeen people. In 2018, it relocated to the World Trade Center in Utrecht. Nixxes experienced operational challenges at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Much of its development hardware remained in the office, while employees moved to remote work. Some production processes also depended on high-speed connections to company servers, making the transition more difficult. The studio nonetheless continued to support partner projects, including Guerrilla Games’ Windows version of Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition. Nixxes helped patch and support that release during 2020 and 2021. On 1 July 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it had acquired Nixxes Software for undisclosed terms. The studio joined PlayStation Studios. Sony subsequently described the acquisition as part of its effort to improve the delivery of first-party PlayStation games on personal computers. The transaction changed Nixxes from an independent external development partner into an internal specialist supporting Sony’s platform strategy. In June 2022, Nixxes’ first separately announced project in its PlayStation Studios role was revealed: PC versions of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The projects were developed in collaboration with Insomniac Games, the PlayStation Studios owner of the Spider-Man titles. The announcements made Nixxes’ PC-porting role more visible to consumers, although the studio’s work continued to include broader co-development functions. In 2023, Nixxes stated that it would expand into additional remaster projects while continuing to work on PC conversions. Its historical development has therefore moved from a one-person Dreamcast porting operation to a Sony-owned international support studio focused on cross-platform engineering, remasters, and co-development.
