Overview

Insomniac Games is an American video game development studio headquartered in Burbank, California. Founded by Ted Price in 1994 as Xtreme Software, the company changed its name to Insomniac Games in 1995 after discovering that the original name was already in use. It began as an independent developer working primarily with external publishers and platform holders, but became one of the most closely associated creative studios in the PlayStation ecosystem. Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired the company in 2019, making it part of PlayStation Studios. The studio's first game was Disruptor, a first-person shooter released for the original PlayStation in 1996. Although critics responded positively, weak marketing and sales placed significant financial pressure on the young company. Insomniac changed direction for its next project, pursuing a colorful, broadly accessible mascot platformer. The result was Spyro the Dragon, released in 1998. Its success produced two sequels—Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon—and established the studio as a major PlayStation developer. Universal Interactive published the trilogy and retained the Spyro intellectual property, so Insomniac eventually moved on to an original franchise of its own. For the PlayStation 2, Insomniac created Ratchet & Clank, a science-fiction action-platforming series centered on the Lombax Ratchet and his robot companion Clank. The original game appeared in 2002, followed by Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal in 2003 and 2004, and Ratchet: Deadlocked in 2005. The series combined platforming, shooting, inventive weapons, humor, exploration, and role-playing elements. It became one of the studio's defining properties and a long-running PlayStation brand. Insomniac expanded beyond platformers during the PlayStation 3 era. Resistance: Fall of Man, released as a PlayStation 3 launch title in 2006, was a science-fiction first-person shooter set in an alternate history in which humanity fights an invading species known as the Chimera. Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 followed in 2008 and 2011. The series demonstrated the studio's ability to handle more mature themes, large-scale combat, online modes, and technologically demanding hardware. Before its acquisition, Insomniac also worked with publishers and partners outside Sony. Fuse, published by Electronic Arts in 2013, was the company's first major multiplatform release. Sunset Overdrive, made with Microsoft Studios and released in 2014 for Xbox One, emphasized fast traversal, colorful visual design, and irreverent humor. The studio later released Song of the Deep through GameTrust, developed mobile titles, and explored virtual-reality projects. These projects reflected an effort to diversify its platforms, genres, and publishing relationships while remaining strongly associated with PlayStation. Insomniac returned to Ratchet & Clank with a 2016 PlayStation 4 reimagining tied to the animated film adaptation. In 2018 it released Marvel's Spider-Man, its first licensed title and a major commercial and critical success. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales followed in 2020 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launched in 2023 for PlayStation 5, continuing the studio's partnership with Marvel Games and becoming its latest released major project. Insomniac is also developing Marvel's Wolverine for PlayStation 5. Its current identity combines proprietary PlayStation franchises, licensed Marvel properties, cinematic presentation, accessible action design, and large-scale first-party production.

History

Insomniac Games was incorporated on February 28, 1994, by Ted Price. Alex Hastings joined in June of that year, followed soon afterward by his brother Brian Hastings. The company initially operated as Xtreme Software, but adopted the Insomniac Games name in 1995 after a naming conflict. Its first project, Disruptor, began as an ambitious first-person shooter for the Panasonic 3DO before moving to the original PlayStation with support from Universal Interactive and producer Mark Cerny. Released in 1996, Disruptor earned favorable critical attention but sold poorly, teaching the small studio important lessons about development, marketing, and commercial positioning. Insomniac responded by pursuing a family-friendly platform game built around an original mascot. Spyro the Dragon launched in 1998 and became a commercial success after initially slow sales. Two sequels followed in 1999 and 2000. The trilogy gave Insomniac a prominent place in the early PlayStation library, although Universal retained the Spyro property. The studio then developed its own science-fiction property for PlayStation 2. Ratchet & Clank debuted in 2002, followed by two sequels in 2003 and 2004 and Ratchet: Deadlocked in 2005. The series established a durable combination of platforming, shooting, humor, exploration, and imaginative weapon design. During the transition to PlayStation 3, Insomniac sought a more mature and technologically demanding project. Resistance: Fall of Man launched alongside the console in 2006. Its alternate-history setting, first-person combat, and online features helped make it a successful new franchise. Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 expanded the series in 2008 and 2011. In parallel, the studio continued to develop Ratchet & Clank projects and experimented with ideas outside its established platforming identity. The company's independent period also included projects made with non-Sony partners. Fuse, published by Electronic Arts in 2013, was Insomniac's first major multiplatform game. Sunset Overdrive, released by Microsoft Studios in 2014, offered a colorful open-world action experience built around acrobatic movement. Insomniac subsequently worked with GameTrust on Song of the Deep and produced mobile and virtual-reality projects. These initiatives broadened its publishing and platform relationships, though the studio continued to be strongly linked with PlayStation. Insomniac released a new Ratchet & Clank game in 2016, a reimagining of the original connected to the film adaptation. In 2018, the studio entered licensed development with Marvel's Spider-Man for PlayStation 4. The game became one of its most prominent releases and led to the expanded Spider-Man projects Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in 2020 and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in 2023. Sony announced its acquisition of Insomniac in August 2019, and the studio became part of Sony Interactive Entertainment's first-party organization, now known as PlayStation Studios. Insomniac is developing Marvel's Wolverine for PlayStation 5, while continuing its role as a major Sony-owned development studio.
