Overview
Neox is a Spanish television channel owned and operated by Atresmedia. It was launched on 30 November 2005, alongside Nova, during the expansion of digital terrestrial television in Spain. The service was originally created to extend the Antena 3 group into the emerging digital-channel environment and was initially aimed mainly at children and younger viewers. Its early identity combined children's programming with youth-oriented entertainment, making it a complementary service to the group's principal general-interest channel, Antena 3. The channel began under the name Antena.Neox. On 1 January 2009, it was temporarily renamed Neox 8, a change intended to associate the service with its logical digital-terrestrial channel number. On 6 August 2010, it adopted the shorter Neox name that remains central to its identity. These naming changes reflected the channel's development from an Antena 3-branded digital outlet into a more distinct Atresmedia entertainment brand. Neox's schedule has evolved but generally follows a recognizable pattern. Children's programming is concentrated in the morning, while the afternoon, evening and night schedules are devoted to films and general-audience series. The channel has been particularly associated with internationally successful American sitcoms and animated series, including The Simpsons, The Big Bang Theory, Friends, Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, The Middle and Modern Family. It has also used programming connected with Atresmedia's broader portfolio, including The Goldbergs and other series that reinforce its entertainment positioning. A notable part of Neox's youth proposition was the Neox Kidz block, introduced on 29 June 2013 as a replacement for the earlier Megatrix children's block. Neox also expanded its schedule in 2014 after the closure of several other Atresmedia channels, including Nitro, Xplora and laSexta3. This brought additional films, docuseries, series and children's content to the service and gave Neox a broader entertainment remit than its original youth-focused profile. The Simpsons became increasingly important to the channel's daytime offer. In October 2017, the series was temporarily placed on Neox while Antena 3 extended its morning programming for political coverage. From September 2018, The Simpsons was broadcast exclusively on Neox within the group's television schedule. The channel also achieved one of its strongest audience moments on 23 May 2019, when 1,636,000 viewers watched the final episode of The Big Bang Theory. The broadcast represented a 9.8% audience share at the time, while Neox recorded a 4.4% daily audience share according to the cited reference material. Neox is distributed through Spain's digital terrestrial television system and is also available through cable and satellite operators. Its programming is additionally accessible through Atresmedia's Atresplayer platform. In December 2020, the children's Neox Kidz offer shifted toward the Kidz identity, with on-demand material and a 24-hour web television service on Atresplayer. In January 2025, the Kidz schedule was extended on weekdays and weekends and acquired Miraculous programming after the closure of Disney Channel in Spain. Overall, Neox remains an Atresmedia entertainment outlet that combines a youth and children's daypart with established international series, films and repeatable franchise programming for a broad television audience.
History
Neox was created during Antena 3's expansion into Spanish digital terrestrial television. The channel began broadcasting on 30 November 2005, the same day as Nova, and was initially known as Antena.Neox. Its purpose was to strengthen the Antena 3 brand in the new digital environment by providing a separate service for children's and younger audiences. Rather than reproducing the full general-interest profile of Antena 3, the early channel mixed children's programming with youth-oriented entertainment. In 2006, Antena 3 and CBS Corporation reached an agreement concerning content produced by CBS, Showtime and UPN. The material was expected to be programmed across Antena.Neox, Antena.Nova and Antena 3, and the original plan contemplated the eventual use of Showtime and UPN identities in Spain. The proposed branding change did not ultimately take place, partly because broadcasting rights were distributed among other Spanish channels. Antena 3 nevertheless obtained rights to future CBS Corporation productions, contributing to the group's ability to program internationally sourced entertainment. The channel underwent two early naming changes. On 1 January 2009, Antena.Neox was renamed Neox 8, linking the service to its logical number on digital terrestrial television. On 6 August 2010, the brand changed again to Neox, the name under which it is generally identified today. The shorter identity helped distinguish the service as an entertainment channel within the developing Atresmedia portfolio. Neox's programming model settled into a daypart structure. Children's content was generally scheduled in the morning, while series and films occupied the afternoon, evening and night. The channel became especially associated with successful American television, including The Simpsons, The Big Bang Theory, Friends, Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, The Middle and Modern Family. This imported-series strategy gave Neox a recognizable entertainment catalogue while allowing it to serve both younger viewers and a wider audience seeking familiar comedy and drama programming. On 29 June 2013, Neox introduced Neox Kidz, a morning children's block that replaced Megatrix. The channel broadened its offer in 2014 after Atresmedia closed Nitro, Xplora and laSexta3. Neox absorbed additional films, docuseries, series and children's material, increasing its role as a general entertainment outlet rather than a narrowly defined youth channel. The Simpsons became an increasingly important part of Neox's identity. In October 2017, it was temporarily moved into Neox's daytime schedule because Antena 3's morning programme had been extended to cover significant political news. In September 2018, the series began airing exclusively on Neox within the group's television schedule. Another important programming milestone came on 23 May 2019, when 1,636,000 viewers watched the finale of The Big Bang Theory. The broadcast produced a reported 9.8% audience share at the time and helped Neox reach its highest stated audience figure. The children's proposition later became more digital. In December 2020, Neox Kidz transitioned toward the Kidz identity, with on-demand programming and a 24-hour web television service available through Atresplayer. In January 2025, Kidz expanded its broadcast hours and acquired Miraculous programming following the closure of Disney Channel in Spain. Neox is distributed through digital terrestrial television, cable and satellite services in Spain and Andorra, and its content is also accessible through Atresplayer. Its continuing role is to combine established international series and films with children's programming and Atresmedia-linked entertainment.
