Overview

Murugappa Group is an Indian diversified business group headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Its origins lie in a money-lending and banking enterprise established in 1900 by Dewan Bahadur A. M. Murugappa Chettiar. The founding business initially operated from Moulmein in Burma, now Myanmar, and subsequently expanded through British Malaya, Ceylon, the Dutch East Indies, and French Indo-China. During the 1930s, the family’s business activity was moved back to India, where it developed into a broad industrial and financial enterprise. The group’s modern portfolio was built through a combination of domestic expansion, joint ventures, acquisitions, and long-term relationships with international industrial partners. Important early steps included the establishment of Coromandel Engineering Company in 1947 and the formation of TI Cycles of India in association with Tube Investments of the United Kingdom in 1949. Carborundum Universal was created in 1954 through a three-way collaboration involving the Murugappa Group, the Carborundum Company of the United States, and Universal Grinding Wheel of the United Kingdom. These ventures established the group’s presence in engineering materials, abrasives, tubes, chains, bicycles, and industrial manufacturing. Murugappa expanded further during the second half of the twentieth century. It acquired Kadamane Estates in 1968, took control of EID Parry in 1981, and developed interests in sugar, fertilizers, crop protection, plantations, and food-related businesses. The group also built a financial-services platform through Cholamandalam Investment and Finance and related companies. Its insurance interests include Cholamandalam MS General Insurance, a joint venture originally developed with Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance. Over time, the group’s agricultural operations grew to include fertilizers, specialty nutrients, crop-protection products, bio-products, sugar, and nutraceuticals, while its engineering businesses expanded into abrasives, ceramics, power equipment, industrial components, tubes, and mobility products. Major group companies and businesses have included Carborundum Universal, Coromandel International, EID Parry, Parry Agro Industries, Tube Investments of India, Shanthi Gears, Wendt (India), Cholamandalam Financial Holdings, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance, Cholamandalam MS General Insurance, and CG Power and Industrial Solutions. Consumer-facing and industrial brands associated with the group include BSA, Hercules, Montra, Montra Electric, Mach City, Ballmaster, Ajax, Parry’s, Chola, Gromor, Shanthi Gears, and Paramfos. The portfolio therefore combines business-to-business manufacturing and agricultural inputs with bicycles, electric mobility, financial products, insurance, sugar, and other consumer or institutional offerings. The group is organized as a family-controlled business house rather than as a single operating company. Several of its principal companies are publicly traded in India, while strategic oversight is exercised through group-level governance and Murugappa family leadership. In the 2010s and 2020s, the group continued to diversify through acquisitions and new ventures, including crop-protection and nutraceutical businesses, international industrial assets, bicycle-related investments, electric mobility, and a controlling investment in CG Power and Industrial Solutions. Its present identity is that of a multi-sector Indian conglomerate whose competitive model rests on long-term ownership, industrial partnerships, portfolio diversification, and operating companies with distinct sector expertise.

History

Murugappa Group began in 1900, when Dewan Bahadur A. M. Murugappa Chettiar established a money-lending and banking business. The enterprise was initially based in Moulmein, Burma, and expanded across commercial centers in British Malaya, Ceylon, the Dutch East Indies, and French Indo-China. In the 1930s, the family moved its business activity back to India, creating the foundation for the group’s later industrial development. The postwar period marked a transition from finance and trading toward manufacturing. In 1947, the group established Coromandel Engineering Company. In 1949, it formed TI Cycles of India in collaboration with Tube Investments of the United Kingdom. This relationship introduced the group to bicycle manufacturing and helped establish the later Tube Investments of India platform. Tube Investments subsequently created Tube Products of India in 1955, TI Diamond Chains in 1960, and TI Miller in the same year. TI Metal Forming followed in 1965. Carborundum Universal was established in Madras in 1954 as a tripartite venture between the Murugappa Group, the Carborundum Company of the United States, and Universal Grinding Wheel of the United Kingdom. The company became a foundation of the group’s abrasives, ceramics, and engineered-materials activities. The group also acquired Kadamane Estates in 1968, adding plantation operations to its developing portfolio. A major strategic turning point came in 1981, when the group took over EID Parry. The transaction broadened Murugappa’s position in sugar, agricultural products, fertilizers, chemicals, and related consumer and industrial businesses. During the 1980s and 1990s, the group continued to build its engineering platform through joint ventures, acquisitions, and restructuring. Murugappa Morgan Thermal Ceramics was established in 1983, while Tube Investments acquired Press Metal in 1990. Carborundum Universal acquired or added several abrasives and materials businesses, including Sterling Abrasives and other specialist operations. The 1990s also saw the consolidation of the agricultural and financial portfolios. EID Parry increased its involvement in Coromandel Fertilisers, which later became Coromandel International. Coromandel absorbed Godavari Fertilizers and Chemicals in 2003 after acquiring the interests previously held by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and IFFCO. In finance, Tube Investments acquired Cholamandalam Investment and Finance in 1999, and the group established Cholamandalam MS General Insurance during the same period. The Murugappa Corporate Board was also formed in 1999 as a group-level coordination mechanism. During the 2000s and 2010s, Murugappa pursued international expansion and sector specialization. Coromandel acquired Ficom Organics, Liberty Phosphates, Sabero Organics, and related crop-protection assets. EID Parry expanded into nutraceuticals through the acquisition of U.S. Nutraceuticals, known as Valensa International. Carborundum Universal added overseas industrial assets, including Foskor Zirconia in South Africa, while Tube Investments acquired Sedis Chain in France. The bicycle business also pursued brand licensing, new manufacturing capacity, bicycle retail concepts, and digital-first brands. The group continued to combine traditional businesses with newer growth areas. CUMI launched an online store for selected industrial products in 2016, and Tube Investments developed electric mobility through the Montra Electric business. In 2020, Murugappa acquired a controlling stake in CG Power and Industrial Solutions, increasing its exposure to power equipment and industrial electrical systems. The group now operates through a large portfolio of companies and businesses covering agriculture, engineering, mobility, finance, insurance, plantations, sugar, nutraceuticals, and industrial technology. Its structure remains centered on Murugappa family ownership and governance, with several important operating companies listed on Indian stock exchanges.
