Overview

Carborundum Universal, commonly known as CUMI, is an Indian industrial manufacturing company and a member of the Murugappa Group. Its principal activities cover abrasives, industrial ceramics, super refractories, electro minerals, polymers, adhesives and selected equipment and engineering products. The company serves industries that require controlled material removal, surface finishing, wear resistance, thermal containment, high-temperature insulation and specialized ceramic or mineral inputs. CUMI originated from the Murugappa Group's diversification beyond banking and cycle manufacturing. In 1950, the group entered a technical and commercial association with Carborundum UK, itself connected with the American abrasive producer Carborundum, and with Universal Grinding Company of the United Kingdom. This collaboration created Carborundum Universal of Madras. The business was subsequently incorporated under the name Carborundum Universal Ltd in 1954. The company's initial purpose was to manufacture core products for its international collaborators, but it gradually developed its own manufacturing base and product portfolio. It entered bonded abrasives after acquiring a facility from Ajax Products in Chennai and later expanded through coated abrasives, electro minerals, industrial ceramics and refractory products. Over time, CUMI moved from being primarily an abrasives producer toward a broader engineered-materials platform, combining manufacturing, mineral processing, technology partnerships, distribution and selected infrastructure activities. Abrasives remain a central business area. CUMI's portfolio includes bonded and coated abrasives, grinding wheels, thin wheels, abrasive rolls, non-woven wheels, super abrasives and other products used for cutting, grinding, polishing, deburring and finishing. Its ceramics activities include high-alumina ceramics, reaction-bonded and sintered silicon carbide, zirconia-based materials, aluminium titanate and other wear- or heat-resistant components. These products are used in applications such as industrial wear liners, metallized ceramic components and equipment exposed to demanding thermal or mechanical conditions. The electro minerals business supplies materials used in abrasive and refractory production. Its materials portfolio has included brown and white fused aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, zirconia-related materials, zirconia mullite, alumina bubble and calcined bauxite. The super refractories business provides fired and monolithic refractory products for high-temperature industrial environments. CUMI has also operated in polymers, adhesives, metal-working fluids, power tools, warehouse equipment and material-handling products, including through its CUMI Direct online platform. CUMI built capabilities through joint ventures, technical collaborations and acquisitions. Notable partnerships included a technical ceramics venture with Coors Ceramics of the United States and the establishment of Murugappa Morgan Thermal Ceramics with Morgan Crucible of the United Kingdom. Wendt (India), associated with Wendt GmbH of Germany and the House of Khatau, was merged into CUMI in 1991. International expansion later brought subsidiaries and operating interests in Canada, Australia, China, Russia, South Africa, Cyprus and the Middle East. The company has also participated in mining, power generation and technology-transfer arrangements. Its historical diversification included bauxite and silicon carbide assets, a hydroelectric power plant in Kerala and wind-power capacity. Research and technical relationships have involved organizations including India's National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, as well as Pennsylvania State University and Answer Technology in the United States. CUMI's present identity is therefore that of a diversified industrial materials and engineered-solutions group rather than a consumer-facing brand. Its pro…

History

Carborundum Universal was formed during the Murugappa Group's postwar diversification from banking and cycle manufacturing into industrial production. In 1950, the group established a collaboration with Carborundum UK and Universal Grinding Company of the United Kingdom. The resulting enterprise, initially known as Carborundum Universal of Madras, was incorporated as Carborundum Universal Ltd in 1954. The early business focused on abrasive materials associated with the collaborating companies. CUMI expanded its domestic manufacturing base after obtaining a bonded-abrasive facility from Ajax Products in Chennai. It later strengthened its abrasive position through the acquisition of Eastern Abrasives in 1978. The company subsequently broadened its portfolio beyond abrasives into electro minerals, ceramics, refractories, polymers and related industrial products. A major stage in the development of the ceramics business came in 1982, when CUMI and Morgan Crucible of the United Kingdom established Murugappa Morgan Thermal Ceramics. The venture was intended to produce technical ceramic and thermal-insulation products. In 1991, Wendt (India), a joint venture associated with Wendt GmbH of Germany and the House of Khatau, was merged with CUMI. That year, CUMI also established an industrial ceramics division at Hosur, Tamil Nadu, through a technical partnership with Coors Ceramics of the United States. The ceramics platform was later expanded to include metallized ceramic components and additional advanced materials. CUMI continued to consolidate related Indian businesses. In 1997, Cutfast Abrasive Tools, Eastern Abrasives, Cutfast Polymers and Carborundum Universal Investment were merged into the company. The business also acquired or integrated other abrasive operations, including Sterling Abrasives and SEDCO during the early 2000s. These steps supported the development of a broader abrasives and engineered-materials portfolio. Internationalization accelerated during the 2000s. CUMI established CUMI Middle East FZE in Ras Al Khaimah in 2005 and acquired Abrasive Enterprises in Canada for approximately US$2.24 million in 2006. It established CUMI International in Cyprus in 2007 and expanded its overseas manufacturing and sales network through the acquisition or establishment of operations in Australia, China and Russia. In 2007, the company took over Sanhe Yanjiao Jingri Diamond Industrial Company in China and Volzhsky Abrasive Works in Russia. In 2008, it acquired Foskor Zirconia in South Africa, adding to its zirconia and electro-minerals capabilities. Alongside manufacturing expansion, CUMI developed mineral and energy assets. Its historical activities included bauxite mines in Gujarat, a silicon carbide plant at Koratty in Kerala and a brown aluminium oxide grains facility at Edapally in Kerala. The company commissioned a 12-megawatt hydroelectric power plant at Maniyar, Kerala, in 1994 and developed a 5.5-megawatt wind installation at Nallur. These activities reflected an effort to support industrial inputs and diversify the group's operating base. The company also pursued technical collaborations and research relationships. Arrangements included technology transfer with Answer Technology of the United States for advanced monolithics, as well as collaborative work involving India's National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Pennsylvania State University in the United States. Such relationships supported the development of advanced ceramics, refractory materials and other engineered products. CUMI Direct, an online commerce platform introduced in 2005, extended the company's distribution model. The platform offered abrasives, industrial ceramics, electro minerals, refractories, metal-working fluids, power tools, warehouse equipment, material-handling equipment and strapping tools. The company's overall history is marked by a progression from a collaborative abrasives manufacturer to a diversified international industrial-materials business operating across the abrasives, ceramics, refractory and mineral-value chains.
