Overview

Multimedia Nusantara University, commonly abbreviated as UMN and known in Indonesian as Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, is a private university in Gading Serpong, Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia. It was established within the Kompas Gramedia Group, the Indonesian media and publishing organization, as part of an effort associated with the development of human resources for the information, communication, technology, and creative industries. The institution was founded after an initiative by Jakob Oetama, a founder of Kompas Gramedia, and was developed by senior Kompas Gramedia figures and a dedicated founding committee. UMN received its operational permit from Indonesia's Ministry of National Education on 25 November 2005. Its formal public launch took place on 20 November 2006 at Hotel Santika in Jakarta, in a ceremony inaugurated by Dodi Nandika, then secretary general of the Ministry of National Education. The university began accepting students for the 2007 academic cohort, initially offering seven study programs: Management, Accounting, Information Systems, Informatics, Computer Engineering, Strategic Communication, and Visual Communication Design. Its inaugural lecture, held on 3 September 2007, was framed around preparing human resources for the information and communications technology era and featured speakers from government, industry, media, and academia. The university's academic portfolio subsequently broadened. Programs in Electronics Engineering, Engineering Physics, Architecture, and Film were added in 2016; Hospitality and Journalism followed in 2017. UMN added a Master of Technology Management program in 2019 and a distance-learning Strategic Communication program in 2021. A Master of Communication Science program was also identified in the university's program-development history. These additions reflect UMN's combination of technology, communication, business, design, architecture, hospitality, and media education rather than a narrow focus on conventional computing. UMN's campus infrastructure supports this interdisciplinary approach. Its original classroom and rectorate complex was inaugurated in 2009. The New Media Tower, a 12-storey building designed with energy-saving features, opened in 2012 and later received the title of Most Energy Efficient New Building in the 2013 National Energy Efficiency Awards. The campus includes specialized laboratories for areas such as artificial intelligence, game development, mobile development, databases, networks, electronics, automation, big data, and physics. Communication and creative-arts facilities include television, radio, photography, newsroom, green-screen, sound, cinema-screening, rendering, printing, and game-design spaces. Business-related facilities include Skystar Ventures, a tax center, food-and-beverage laboratory, front-office laboratory, housekeeping laboratory, and kitchen laboratory. The university also provides a library, student areas, sports facilities, and student dormitories. Its media-oriented learning environment includes Radio UMN, a student-driven radio service that has broadcast on 107.7 FM and through online streaming. UMN's library has been described as holding more than 20,000 printed items and providing access to electronic research resources, discussion rooms, and reference assistance. UMN awarded degrees to its first graduating cohort in November 2011. At that ceremony, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu delivered remarks. Two graduates received international scholarships for further study at Tokyo Denki University in Japan and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman in Malaysia, while the university reported that almost 80 percent of the first graduating class had entered professional employment. The institution's public identity remains closely connected to multimedia, digital technology, communications, design, entrepreneurship, and the wider creative economy.

History

Multimedia Nusantara University emerged from an educational initiative associated with Jakob Oetama, one of the founders of Kompas Gramedia. The concept was developed with the involvement of Agung Adiprasetyo, Teddy Surianto, members of the Kompas Gramedia board, and a founding committee led by P. M. Winarno as chairman and Y. Budi Susanto as vice chairman. The project was intended to create an institution able to prepare graduates for Indonesia's growing information, communications, technology, and creative sectors. The university's operating permit was issued by Indonesia's Ministry of National Education on 25 November 2005. Although the institution had been legally established by that point, its formal launch occurred on 20 November 2006 at Hotel Santika in Jakarta. The ceremony was inaugurated by Dodi Nandika, secretary general of the Ministry of National Education. UMN subsequently opened admissions for the 2007 academic cohort. Its initial academic structure comprised seven programs spanning business, computing, communication, and visual design: Management, Accounting, Information Systems, Informatics, Computer Engineering, Strategic Communication, and Visual Communication Design. The first institutional lecture took place on 3 September 2007 and focused on human-resource development for the ICT era. During its initial growth period, UMN built a campus in Gading Serpong, Tangerang. The original rectorate and classroom complex was inaugurated on 2 December 2009. The university later expanded its physical capacity with the New Media Tower, a 12-storey facility inaugurated on 8 September 2012. Designed with energy-efficiency measures developed with Synergy Efficiency Solutions, the building was subsequently recognized as the Most Energy Efficient New Building in the 2013 National Energy Efficiency Awards. This became one of the institution's most visible examples of linking campus development with environmental and technological themes. UMN's academic expansion continued during the 2010s and early 2020s. Four programs—Electronics Engineering, Engineering Physics, Architecture, and Film—were added in 2016. Hospitality and Journalism were added in 2017, followed by the Master of Technology Management in 2019. In 2021, the university introduced Strategic Communication through distance learning. The program-development record also identifies a Master of Communication Science program in preparation, bringing the institution's described offering toward 16 study programs. The university's facilities developed in parallel with its curriculum. Information-technology laboratories cover areas including artificial intelligence, game development, mobile development, database systems, ethical hacking, computer networks, electronics, industrial automation, big data, and physics. Communication facilities include a newsroom, television studio, radio station, collaboration spaces, and photography studio. Art and design students have access to architecture, photography, green-screen, rendering, cinema-screening, printing, sound, and game-design facilities. Business and hospitality students use entrepreneurship, taxation, food-and-beverage, front-office, housekeeping, and kitchen laboratories. Dormitories, sports areas, student lounges, and a library complement the academic facilities. UMN's first graduates received their degrees on 26 November 2011. Mari Elka Pangestu, then Indonesia's minister for tourism and creative economy, appeared at the ceremony. Two graduates received full-tuition international scholarships to Tokyo Denki University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. The university also reported that approximately 80 percent of its first graduates had been accepted into professional employment. Over time, UMN became associated with alumni in entertainment, journalism, online content, music, and other creative fields, while maintaining its broader role as a private university serving Indonesian students in technology, business, communication, and design.
